AirForestry’s pitch: AirForestry replaces traditional machines that damage the soil and trees, by harvesting the trees from the air with high-capacity electrical drones. AirForestry can increase the forests’ ability to sequester carbon by freeing 20 percent of forest land currently used for forestry access roads. That in combination with harvesting will enable the forest to store 200 Megatonnes extra CO2/ year. We can also make forests more resilient to wildfires (addressing a 6.5Gtons challenge), storms, droughts, tree epidemics and biodiversity loss. Our mission is to take a gigantic chunk out of the world’s carbon footprint by creating a more resilient, productive, and beautiful forest for everyone.

These drones will have to be huge! Do you think that the battery power will scale? Also what are your timescales including CAA approval?

@ian_humble - For the thinning operations we build and fly a 6 m drone, (check out our movies on LinkedIn). Large but very manageable. A battery powered drone is perfect for these forest operations as distances to fly is fairly short and flying is quite efficient, but great question! For flight approval, it is a stepwise process, but we already have approval to fly in a forest from the Swedish NAA.

Anything that allows us to have more forest is a good idea! I imagine that this would make it easier to harvest our wood plantations more sustainably.
