For the fourth year in a row, Swedish entrepreneurs have been awarded in one of Europe’s largest innovation competitions for climate impact, Startup 4 Climate. The winners of this year’s competition, startups Cemvision and Novige, convinced the jury with fossil-free, circular, and energy-efficient cement; and a combined wave-, sun-, and wind power solution, respectively. The winning companies will receive SEK 1 million each and coaching from the jury. 2023 has been a record-breaking year for the competition with 75 nominated companies and over 8 200 participants in the People’s Vote. On Wednesday evening the eight finalists pitched for a fascinated audience and a very impressed jury. “Wave power and fossil-free cement would be two revolutionary contributions to the energy and climate transition. This year’s starting field was by far the most challenging ever, and I am incredibly impressed by the drive and competence we saw in all eight finalists. Winners from previous years have brought in multi-million investments after winning Startup 4 Climate and we believe that this year’s winners have the same bright future ahead of them,” said Johan Lindehag, member of the jury and CEO of Ellevio. Cemvision The most resource-efficient cement on the market – fossil-free, energy-efficient, and circular – is made by Cemvision and backed by Bill Gates. The innovation means that significantly less calcium oxide is needed, meaning that limestone can be omitted. Instead, Cemvision extracts calcium oxide from industrial waste. This means an 80 to 100 percent reduction in energy use compared to limestone and traditional production and entails that the process can be electrified. Cement production is one of the biggest sources of emissions in the world at around 8 percent of global emissions. Cemvision is based in Stockholm but their CEO Oscar Hållén comes from Växjö, and his co-founder Claes Kollberg works from southern Öland. Novige Novige’s wave power solution differs from other heavy, complicated wave power with lighter units that give a higher effect while adding solar panels and wind turbines. Novige’s wave power works like an old-school garden pump with few robust components – accessible standard components. Simple, effective, and a lot of energy for your money. The founder and CEO Jan Skjoldhammer made the first sketch of the invention 35 years ago. Hailing from Oslo and flying over waves for three decades as a SAS pilot, he is now focused on Novige and Täby. If you’re curious you can find an operational wave power unit by Svanholmen outside Lidingö in Stockholm. “As an entrepreneur myself, Startup 4 Climate is one of my favorite things. Year after year, we in the jury get reminded of the amount of great ideas and drive there is in the long country of Sweden. And in these dark times, I feel it’s even more important to put the spotlight on climate heroes who can make a big difference and inspire each other. We hope that the award will come to good use!” said Stefan Krook, member of the jury and founder of GodEl. About Startup 4 Climate Startup 4 Climate is one of Europe’s largest innovation competitions and was founded to accelerate the energy transition. The best ideas with the biggest measurable climate impact win. The competition is possible thanks to a partnership between Ellevio and GodEl. The jury consists of Johanna Mossberg, department head at the Swedish Energy Agency; Jane Walerud, investor; Lina Bertling Tjernberg, professor in energy systems at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden; Stefan Krook, founder of GodEl and Kivra; Johan Lindehad, CEO of Ellevio. One of Europe’s biggest energy and climate innovation challenges, Startup 4 Climate, opens today. The challenge is founded by GodEl and Ellevio with the aspiration to accelerate the energy transition. The best ideas, with the greatest impact on the energy and climate transition, will win. - The energy issue is a key component of the transition to a climate neutral society. Startup 4 Climate is focused on solutions within the energy sector and the prize does make a big difference, says Gustaf Forsberg, founder of NitroCapt and one of last year’s winners. The Uppsala based company, NitroCapt, took home first prize in 2022 for their new, chemical process for the production of fossil free fertilisers using air, water, and renewable energy. Since receiving the prize in November, things have been looking up; they have almost doubled their staff and are enjoying an ever increasing interest from customers all over Europe. Startup 4 Climate was founded to contribute to the acceleration from current energy systems to those solutions that are smarter, more efficient, and have the potential to combine technical development with a reduced impact on the environment and the climate. - Our intention with this challenge is to discover new ideas, innovations, and initiatives that can help realise common goals for a development that serves us, instead of one that happens at the expense of life on earth, says Johan Lindehag, CEO of Ellevio, member of the jury, and co-founder of Startup 4 Climate. Calling Swedish startups Last year’s edition of Startup 4 Climate attracted a record number of participants and a big engagement through “the people’s vote”. In addition to NitroCapt, Halland based company Helios Innovations also received first prize for their exciting processing solutions that help factories save electricity and water. Now the time has come again. 2 million SEK are up for grabs for young companies that can convince the jury of experts that their ideas are going to have the greatest impact on the energy and climate transition. The challenge is aimed at Swedish startups and sets out to discover, highlight, and support entrepreneurs with innovations that can accelerate the energy transition. This could be through products or services that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, makes energy use more efficient or brings about behavioural change. - Many of the previous winners have acquired multimillion investments after winning Startup 4 Climate. Talk about a positive spiral, says Maria Erdmann, CEO of GodEl and co-founder of Startup 4 Climate. If there’s one thing we would like to put extra focus on this time it would be to get more women applicants this year. The energy industry ranks highly in terms of gender equality, and we would like for the group of participants to reflect that, Erdmann adds. -- About Startup 4 Climate - One of Europe’s biggest innovation challenges with the aim to accelerate the energy transition. The best ideas, with the greatest impact on the energy and climate transition, will win. - The challenge is made possible thanks to a partnership between Ellevio and GodEl and is carried out in collaboration with the innovation growhouse THINGS and the social network We Don’t Have Time. - The jury consists of Johanna Mossberg, VP of Biorefinery and Energy at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Jane Walerud, Investor, Lina Bertling Tjernberg, Professor and Director of the Energy platform at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stefan Krook, founder of GodEl and Kivra, and Johan Lindehag, CEO of Ellevio. - The submission period of Startup 4 Climate 2023 runs from 24 May until 20 August. - The submission period is followed by the people’s vote. The winners are announced at the final event in November. - -

Airpelago’s pitch: Airpelago is developing an advanced automation software which streamlines large-scale inspections of power lines with drones, leading to emission-free inspections and a more reliable power grid. Today’s inspection methods, i. e. using helicopters or walking by foot, are slow, create large emissions and most-importantly, miss a lot of faults. Many have tried using drones instead, but have found it too expensive and inefficient for large-scale inspections. By automating the entire inspection process, our solution makes drones a cost-efficient alternative to helicopters, while detecting up to 10 times as many faults, thus detecting critical issues proactively before they lead to blackouts.

Tentania’s pitch: The building sector in the EU is responsible for 40% of all produced energy and 36% of all CO₂ emissions. We are on a mission to reduce these numbers. We have developed a cloud platform that contains two products. The first product, Vala Energy, makes buildings smarter. Powered by AI, it reduces heating by up to 15%. Our second product, Vala Home, is a communication platform. For the real estate owner, Vala Home means news, surveys, and case management. For the resident, Vala Home means a household app that integrates with the apartment. Using Vala Home, the resident can for example read their individual energy usage. The app also uses nudging to make residents live more climate friendly.

Resilient Grid Sweden’s pitch: Changes related to our emissions are often associated with sacrifice and hardship. Our algorithm Sinus Energy allows for a huge impact on how energy is used more efficiently, and emissions can be drastically reduced without sacrificing living standards, by using storage units and energy trade. Today there is great imbalance between demand and availability of power over the day. This causes enormous strain on the grid leading to very high energy prices when demand is high. For the grid to cope there are two main routes which can be pursued; 1. Fortify and expand the power grid. 2. Balance the grid using energy trade. We prefer the second option: It's cheaper, faster and saves tons of CO₂.

@patrick_kiash Dear Patrick, thanks for the inquiry! Well, basically energy, like any commodity, is traded from the principal of supply and demand which is also what drives fluctuations in price. High demand = high price and vice versa. Renewable energy is non-linear produced, or sometimes referred to as "non-plannable". Considering our ambition to fully transfer to re-newable energy, there will be big fluctuations in price, as well as enormous strain on the power grid due to the fact that large energy consumers such as base and process industries will continue to have a high demand for power - regardless of the current available power. Our algorithm analyses pricing from energy trading platforms to establish whether to buy, hold or sell energy to and from the grid. This will make better use of generated energy, improve economy for energy consumers as well as balance the power grid. Any further inquiries we remain at your disposal! All the best / Resilient Grid Sweden

Absolutely agree that option 2 is the smarter option. We operate solar panels on our roof and 2/3 of the electricity produced goes into the grid. Somewhere, the sun is shining and the wind is blowing and the waves are moving (etc. - you get the picture) all the time. Connecting our resources, including storage capacity (e.g. electric) cars, will allow us to maximize the use of available energy. I live in Germany and wish that the government would get moving on mandating all aspects of the energy grid that require an upgrade, in order to make option 2 work for us.

Endre Technology’s pitch: Endre has developed a technology to produce forecasts and analytics of electricity demand for specific end-uses on an hourly scale, for single neighbourhoods for up to 10 years into the future. The neighbourhoods are similar in size to individual low-voltage grids. Forecasts are produced with quantified uncertainty and help grid operators in grid planning, mitigation, and expansion. Currently, forecasts and analytics include charging of personal electric vehicles, charging points, public transportation, and heavy trucks. Forecasts and analytics are done using third party big data, thereby excluding the need for smart-meter data. Making our platform extremely scalable and quickly expandable.

Smartergy’s pitch: The energy prices increase rapidly with electricity up to 5 SEK/kWh. This will increase further since the electrical grid can’t handle the variations in renewable energy production and increasing demand. With AI, we can predict the energy demand and trade on the energy market for you to buy low and sell high. We will help you trade on support markets that are otherwise closed for smaller energy traders making the profit margins even better. With a mix of technologies in our energy storages we can increase the lifetime of the energy storage by at least a factor of 2, not only increasing customers revenue but also lowering the environmental impact.

H2 Energy Scandinavia’s pitch: As the world strives for decarbonization, a big question remains, can fossil fuel still fulfill a role consistent with the vision Zero Carbon? The answer is Yes, when using H2 Energy newest innovation - e-Reformer. Our innovation makes an electrified upgrade of the world’s most common hydrogen production method, Steam Methane Reforming. Typically, SMR generates heat through combustion of natural gas which result in CO2 emissions. With our e-Reformer, the same reaction is facilitated, however, no combustion is needed for heat generation, thus eliminating the associated environmental impact! We provide a solution where hydrogen can be produced in a green and cost-effective manner.

Helios Innovations’ pitch: If society is to succeed in the transition to renewable energy, we both need to produce more energy, but also become better at using this energy in a more efficient way. We aim towards making one of the world's most energy consuming processes, evaporation, more energy efficient. We have developed a new evaporation technology that can utilize low temperature (down to 40°C) waste heat to evaporate industrial liquids. By using energy that otherwise would be wasted in cooling towers we can drastically reduce the energy consumption associated with evaporation. With our technology our customers can improve their energy, waste and water management and reduce their operation cost.

Samster’s pitch: Today nearly all drying processes require high amounts of energy. A big part is driven by fossil fuels. Meaning even when you buy eco-friendly food it could have been dried using fossil fuels. Some drying processes affect the material negatively and can destroy parts of it. In addition to wasting material, it is very unusual to reuse the water that the material releases. This is also flushed away. Our drying method is solar driven from our patented solar hybrids and cuts the power needed with 80%. And instead of carbon dioxide, our only residual product is clean water that can be reused. We can also control the process very neatly and create a gentler drying process to reduce waste.

@ian_humble - For the thinning operations we build and fly a 6 m drone, (check out our movies on LinkedIn). Large but very manageable. For flight approval, it is a stepwise process, but we already have approval to fly in a forest from the Swedish NAA.

Novige’s pitch: Our goal is “Saving the climate with profitable wave power” with our wave energy converter concept, NoviOcean, which extracts renewable electricity from ocean waves. NoviOcean is unique due to the use of a few, simple, light, and strong subsystems that have been well-proven in other industries (e.g., hydropower) for centuries. We call it the “inverted hydro power plant at sea”, with the ocean acting as a never-drying dam. Moreover, NoviOcean utilizes a rectangular float (as opposed to circular) which significantly improves the lifting capacity by a factor of 4-10 vs. the competition. All the above enable it to produce stable electricity, at a lower cost compared to other marine energy concepts.

@edwin_wangombe , Thanks for the enthusiasm. Yes, Africa is certainly on our chart. As the waves as lower but stable and long from Senegal to Congo, most wave energy concepts will deliver very small outputs in these coastlines. A bit technical but due to our non-resonant behavior, as opposed to the more common resonant concepts, plus the fact that we easily can mount a larger float for these areas, we can still extract high outputs even these areas. This is would be a challenge for most other solutions. See you in some years, cast a vote first:-) //Jan

I am very excited for your solution viability and proven output! We need to leverage our Ocean and wave energy to even out the very un-even energy production from sun and wind. If the wave energy platform becomes solid enough we will be able to move away from fossil fuels. With sun and wind only, that will not be possible. Bravo- you have my vote 👊🏻💥💦🌱Only question is how can you speed up production and deployment? We need this now and not 2050.

Big thanks Susanne, much appreciated, and happy that one with your immense background are among those that early on see the importance of this product. To your question; Other developers just now deploying full scales in the ocean, have consumed ten times or more than we need to spend, and we will achieve more than double their average output. This present budget will mean three years from now until we are in the sea. The Chinese built a giant Covid hospital in three weeks... How? Lots of money and manpower! We could move much much faster given a larger budget! 1) I see filantropists for instance advocating gladly how they donate billions, to other foundations...., not to the ones that need the cash the most, companies like us that do the work. So, if any reader has connections to these big pockets, and they honestly want real action, most welcome to connect us! 2) Otherwise, traditional investors that want to see rapid change to the best of the climate, combined with making perhaps their best investment ever, welcome to be in contact and scrutinize our numbers. 3) Large utilities, oil & gas companies, industries and shipyards with a global network, are also win-wins. They normally want to sit on the fence and wait to see concepts proven in full scale. A few more forward thinking are now investigating more, and evaluating us and others. Why? Because we will have one, maximum two larger global partners. They will be able to deploy primarily in their own markets for years, possible having the best solution for stable clean energy for decades to come. For the others who "saved" 5-10 million, actually pocket money for most, they will have to wait 10-15 years before getting access to our solution, as we will be busy with the first parter(s). So, save that expense, and possibly loose out on the very best greenifying solution that marketing cannot buy, plus a billion dollar market, or scrutinize what we do, then decide. The choice is yours, now, not in two years. Long answer, but needed to show the reality and importance in this!!

Rebase Energy’s pitch: The energy system is rapidly moving from centralised and fossil to distributed and weather dependent. This makes it far more complex to plan and operate. We provide an open and collaborative energy modelling platform. The platform allows energy engineers and data scientists to quickly create, iterate and deploy state-of-the-art open-source energy models for forecasting, simulation, and optimisation. The key value proposition is to avoid time consuming data collection, improve predictions and increase sales conversion. Companies like E.ON, Hitachi Energy, Tibber, Flower and Shell are already today using our platform to accelerate the energy transition.

Cresponix’ pitch: Hydrogen gas is a storage solution for energy generated from renewable electricity. Today, the storage of hydrogen gas can only utilize 40% of the total energy input from renewable electricity and the rest of the energy is emitted as waste heat. Hydrogen storage can become more competitive if this waste heat energy was recovered and reused. Today, waste heat above 80 degrees can be converted into electricity, but there are no economical solutions to reuse waste heat below 80 degrees, especially the low-grade waste heat between 30-50 degrees. Cresponix gives hydrogen storage an extra revenue stream by building land-based farms of shrimp, fish, and vegetables next to the production of hydrogen. There, the emitted waste heat is collected and reused towards heating up a farming facility towards 30 degrees all year around.

I understand hydrogen is quite reactive (from chemistry class days, I recall it has one valence electron). How do you control for combustion, or hydrogen reacting with other substances?

Cool solution! Have you already implemented your solution somewhere?

@sarah_chabane Thank you Sarah! The farming practice is implemented in a total of 16 large scale farms in Africa and South America, but where the heat energy comes from the tropical environment. Last 2 years we have developed the farming technology towards colder conditions and absorption of waste heat. We are right now in Västervik establishing our first commercial unit model in colder climate, that after verification can be used to scale up towards fully commercial farms next to waste heat emitting industries, where we are targeting industries that are utilizing hydrogen power production.

DTR1tech’s pitch: DTR1 is an innovative software solution that allows electricity grid operators to take full advantage of their power assets. With our help, you can extend the transmission capacity of your power transformers, power lines, and other assets up to 20% and utilize this extra capacity to connect more renewables to the grid and reduce curtailment of green power, thus increasing share of renewable and green power in the energy mix. We do not need any sensors; we use the data you already have. Our superior algorithms would allow you to plan your dispatch, quickly adapt your grid to unexpected disruptions and emergencies. Opening for a grid adapted to modern use and consumption patterns.

The competition is closing. Here is a summary of why you want to give your vote to DTR1. For the planet: - significant reduction in the need for new materials (saving at least 20% of raw material by de-sizing and better utilization of power networks) - which means less mining and less extraction of metals - transformers use a lot of paper for their insulation - fewer transformers - less paper- less cut down the forest - more room for renewable energy - means less need for fossil fuels (gas, coal etc.) - less pollution - less CO2 emissions - utilization of existing grid instead of building new expansions - saving on CO2 emissions from production and construction of new equipment. For you personally: - we help to integrate more renewables into the grid and remove grid bottlenecks - which means cheaper electricity - fewer fossil fuels - means better air quality - less climate change This year we are entering into a very difficult winter period and our electricity prices are already rising to record levels - we need to use any edge we have to reduce energy prices and utilize every watt of renewable power we can.

Sounds like a great innovation. If you had to explain it to an 8-year-old what would you say? :)
•
•

@sarah_chabane Thank you for your support. To an 8year old, I would say: Imagine you have a box which fits 10 cookies and you always use it to put 10 cookies - but in fact, it has a secret compartment which can fit 2 or maybe even 3 extra cookies. That's how power components are designed - they all have more room for energy, but we are not using it. So in fact, next time you see a news article about the lack of space for more renewable energy and grid bottlenecks - remember there is always much more space that is being currently used and the only way forward is continuous monitoring and adjustment of limits to real-time conditions. And more renewables also means cheaper electricity bills!

Smart Climate Scandinavian’s pitch: Aircrafts need energy not only when flying, when parked they need ventilation and heating or cooling to keep the cabin conditioned for crew and passengers. This is an energy demanding task and source of large emissions. Traditionally it’s accomplished using diesel or electrically driven AC-units. Or even with the APU in the aircraft that burn jet fuel. Did you know that the APU can produce up to 700 kg of carbon emissions per hour? The same amount of emissions as driving a car from Stockholm, Sweden to Barcelona, Spain! Our alternative, the Pure Generation AC, will cut costs and emissions. Save up to 40% energy, 95% less emissions vs the APU & 95% less electric power vs electric units.

Vesiro’s pitch: Companies are increasingly relying on data to make their businesses more competitive. However, large databases are slow, which means that people analysing the data waste time searching for the data they need in their analyses. Data analysts have told us that they can spend entire days waiting for search results. Using our novel, patented algorithms, we enable companies to get much better search speeds in their databases, reducing costs, time waste, and the waste of energy from their servers. Our software will work as a performance enhancing add-on, a turbo kit, to our customers’ databases, so they will not have to change anything in their existing systems.

We certainly are happy about winning this award, a great evening indeed! Many know little about ocean energy, but here in short a crash course: 1) Waves are more stable, and also off-phased in time from wind, and of course works at night when there is no sun power available. 2) By this balancing effect, our units can and will mitigate the need for burning of fossils when there is little wind and no sun. 3) Our 1 MW units, 600 kW wave, 300 kW wind, and 100 kW sun power, has a total height of 12 meters, hardly visible from land, makes minimal noise, and does no harm to animal life. 4) There are limited sea areas available, so important to get the most out of every square kilometer in use or planned. In one sq. km you can normally have one 10 MW turbine, producing about 34 000 GWh / year. 5) We can place 15 NoviOceans in the same area, producing about 52 000 GWh per year. But, the given winner is to combine the use of the area, the subsea cable, the leasing cost and the infrastructure, then producing 86 000 GWh per year in the same area, while burning less fossils and needing less batteries. Now, if you belive this is a winning solution, or not, feel free to state your opinion, and of course also to pass forward. J.S:
