For the fourth year in a row, Swedish entrepreneurs have been awarded in one of Europe’s largest innovation competitions for climate impact, Startup 4 Climate. The winners of this year’s competition, startups Cemvision and Novige, convinced the jury with fossil-free, circular, and energy-efficient cement; and a combined wave-, sun-, and wind power solution, respectively. The winning companies will receive SEK 1 million each and coaching from the jury. 2023 has been a record-breaking year for the competition with 75 nominated companies and over 8 200 participants in the People’s Vote. On Wednesday evening the eight finalists pitched for a fascinated audience and a very impressed jury. “Wave power and fossil-free cement would be two revolutionary contributions to the energy and climate transition. This year’s starting field was by far the most challenging ever, and I am incredibly impressed by the drive and competence we saw in all eight finalists. Winners from previous years have brought in multi-million investments after winning Startup 4 Climate and we believe that this year’s winners have the same bright future ahead of them,” said Johan Lindehag, member of the jury and CEO of Ellevio. Cemvision The most resource-efficient cement on the market – fossil-free, energy-efficient, and circular – is made by Cemvision and backed by Bill Gates. The innovation means that significantly less calcium oxide is needed, meaning that limestone can be omitted. Instead, Cemvision extracts calcium oxide from industrial waste. This means an 80 to 100 percent reduction in energy use compared to limestone and traditional production and entails that the process can be electrified. Cement production is one of the biggest sources of emissions in the world at around 8 percent of global emissions. Cemvision is based in Stockholm but their CEO Oscar Hållén comes from Växjö, and his co-founder Claes Kollberg works from southern Öland. Novige Novige’s wave power solution differs from other heavy, complicated wave power with lighter units that give a higher effect while adding solar panels and wind turbines. Novige’s wave power works like an old-school garden pump with few robust components – accessible standard components. Simple, effective, and a lot of energy for your money. The founder and CEO Jan Skjoldhammer made the first sketch of the invention 35 years ago. Hailing from Oslo and flying over waves for three decades as a SAS pilot, he is now focused on Novige and Täby. If you’re curious you can find an operational wave power unit by Svanholmen outside Lidingö in Stockholm. “As an entrepreneur myself, Startup 4 Climate is one of my favorite things. Year after year, we in the jury get reminded of the amount of great ideas and drive there is in the long country of Sweden. And in these dark times, I feel it’s even more important to put the spotlight on climate heroes who can make a big difference and inspire each other. We hope that the award will come to good use!” said Stefan Krook, member of the jury and founder of GodEl. About Startup 4 Climate Startup 4 Climate is one of Europe’s largest innovation competitions and was founded to accelerate the energy transition. One of Europe’s biggest energy and climate innovation challenges, Startup 4 Climate, opens today. The challenge is founded by GodEl and Ellevio with the aspiration to accelerate the energy transition. The best ideas, with the greatest impact on the energy and climate transition, will win. - The energy issue is a key component of the transition to a climate neutral society. Startup 4 Climate is focused on solutions within the energy sector and the prize does make a big difference, says Gustaf Forsberg, founder of NitroCapt and one of last year’s winners. The Uppsala based company, NitroCapt, took home first prize in 2022 for their new, chemical process for the production of fossil free fertilisers using air, water, and renewable energy. Since receiving the prize in November, things have been looking up; they have almost doubled their staff and are enjoying an ever increasing interest from customers all over Europe. Startup 4 Climate was founded to contribute to the acceleration from current energy systems to those solutions that are smarter, more efficient, and have the potential to combine technical development with a reduced impact on the environment and the climate. - Our intention with this challenge is to discover new ideas, innovations, and initiatives that can help realise common goals for a development that serves us, instead of one that happens at the expense of life on earth, says Johan Lindehag, CEO of Ellevio, member of the jury, and co-founder of Startup 4 Climate. Calling Swedish startups Last year’s edition of Startup 4 Climate attracted a record number of participants and a big engagement through “the people’s vote”. In addition to NitroCapt, Halland based company Helios Innovations also received first prize for their exciting processing solutions that help factories save electricity and water. Now the time has come again. 2 million SEK are up for grabs for young companies that can convince the jury of experts that their ideas are going to have the greatest impact on the energy and climate transition. The challenge is aimed at Swedish startups and sets out to discover, highlight, and support entrepreneurs with innovations that can accelerate the energy transition. This could be through products or services that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, makes energy use more efficient or brings about behavioural change. - Many of the previous winners have acquired multimillion investments after winning Startup 4 Climate. Talk about a positive spiral, says Maria Erdmann, CEO of GodEl and co-founder of Startup 4 Climate. If there’s one thing we would like to put extra focus on this time it would be to get more women applicants this year. The energy industry ranks highly in terms of gender equality, and we would like for the group of participants to reflect that, Erdmann adds. -- About Startup 4 Climate - One of Europe’s biggest innovation challenges with the aim to accelerate the energy transition. Airpelago’s pitch: Airpelago is developing an advanced automation software which streamlines large-scale inspections of power lines with drones, leading to emission-free inspections and a more reliable power grid. Today’s inspection methods, i. e. using helicopters or walking by foot, are slow, create large emissions and most-importantly, miss a lot of faults. Many have tried using drones instead, but have found it too expensive and inefficient for large-scale inspections. By automating the entire inspection process, our solution makes drones a cost-efficient alternative to helicopters, while detecting up to 10 times as many faults, thus detecting critical issues proactively before they lead to blackouts.

Resilient Grid Sweden’s pitch: Changes related to our emissions are often associated with sacrifice and hardship. Our algorithm Sinus Energy allows for a huge impact on how energy is used more efficiently, and emissions can be drastically reduced without sacrificing living standards, by using storage units and energy trade. Today there is great imbalance between demand and availability of power over the day. This causes enormous strain on the grid leading to very high energy prices when demand is high. For the grid to cope there are two main routes which can be pursued; 1. Fortify and expand the power grid. 2. Balance the grid using energy trade. We prefer the second option: It's cheaper, faster and saves tons of CO₂.

Smartergy’s pitch: The energy prices increase rapidly with electricity up to 5 SEK/kWh. This will increase further since the electrical grid can’t handle the variations in renewable energy production and increasing demand. With AI, we can predict the energy demand and trade on the energy market for you to buy low and sell high. We will help you trade on support markets that are otherwise closed for smaller energy traders making the profit margins even better. With a mix of technologies in our energy storages we can increase the lifetime of the energy storage by at least a factor of 2, not only increasing customers revenue but also lowering the environmental impact.

Samster’s pitch: Today nearly all drying processes require high amounts of energy. A big part is driven by fossil fuels. Meaning even when you buy eco-friendly food it could have been dried using fossil fuels. Some drying processes affect the material negatively and can destroy parts of it. In addition to wasting material, it is very unusual to reuse the water that the material releases. This is also flushed away. Our drying method is solar driven from our patented solar hybrids and cuts the power needed with 80%. And instead of carbon dioxide, our only residual product is clean water that can be reused. We can also control the process very neatly and create a gentler drying process to reduce waste.

Novige’s pitch: Our goal is “Saving the climate with profitable wave power” with our wave energy converter concept, NoviOcean, which extracts renewable electricity from ocean waves. NoviOcean is unique due to the use of a few, simple, light, and strong subsystems that have been well-proven in other industries (e.g., hydropower) for centuries. We call it the “inverted hydro power plant at sea”, with the ocean acting as a never-drying dam. Moreover, NoviOcean utilizes a rectangular float (as opposed to circular) which significantly improves the lifting capacity by a factor of 4-10 vs. the competition. All the above enable it to produce stable electricity, at a lower cost compared to other marine energy concepts.

Cresponix’ pitch: Hydrogen gas is a storage solution for energy generated from renewable electricity. Today, the storage of hydrogen gas can only utilize 40% of the total energy input from renewable electricity and the rest of the energy is emitted as waste heat. Hydrogen storage can become more competitive if this waste heat energy was recovered and reused. Today, waste heat above 80 degrees can be converted into electricity, but there are no economical solutions to reuse waste heat below 80 degrees, especially the low-grade waste heat between 30-50 degrees. Cresponix gives hydrogen storage an extra revenue stream by building land-based farms of shrimp, fish, and vegetables next to the production of hydrogen. There, the emitted waste heat is collected and reused towards heating up a farming facility towards 30 degrees all year around.
