The City of Helsinki has voted to ban advertising that promotes fossil fuels and other carbon-intensive products and services. While the exact scope of the ban hasn't been decided, it may include combustion-engine vehicles, aviation, and cruise holidays.
Following in the footsteps of cities such as Stockholm, Amsterdam, Bristol and The Hague, this is a move to counteract the increasing number of fossil fuel clients taken on by advertising agencies.
While current advertising contracts in the city will last until 2035, the council will examine how the ban will interact with and possible affect current advertising arrangements.
Isaac Jyvรคsjรคrvi, Councillor in the city of Helsinki, said:
When I proposed this initiative, I wanted Helsinki to show that our climate ambitions are more than just words. We cannot say we're fighting the climate crisis while using our public spaces to promote the very industries driving it. Advertising shapes not only what we buy, but also what we consider normal. I'm incredibly proud that Helsinki has taken this step, and I hope our decision inspires other cities across Europe and beyond to follow our lead.
