At one of the world's oldest weather stations, Observatoriekullen in the middle of Stockholm, measurements have been made since 1756. The station thus has one of the world's longest, uninterrupted meteorological measuring series.
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) weather station is still operational.
Last month it measured June as the hottest June month ever in Stockholm since measurement began in 1756! I wrote the same sentence last year!
In June, an average temperature of 19.3C (66.74F) degrees was measured in Stockholm municipality. It is a historically high listing, the highest since the Stockholm measuring station was started in 1756. The normal temperature for June is 15.6C (60.08F) degrees. This year it was record heat. For 29 out of 30 days, the daily average temperature was above the historical average during the "normal period" 1961-1990 (source: Newsworthy). Previous records are from last year with 18.5C (65.3F) degrees and the year previous that with 18.4C (65.12) degrees in 2019.
THE HOTTEST AND COLDEST MONTHS SINCE MEUSREMENT BEGAN IN 1756
- 2021 19.3C degrees
- 2020 18.5C degrees
- 2019 18.4C degrees
- 1917 18.1C degrees
- 1936 18.1C degrees
- 1992 18.1C degrees
- 1966 18.0C degrees
- 1896 17.9C degrees
- 1774 17.8C degrees
- 1789 17.7C degrees
Why am I calling this ground zero?
Many news outlets report about record temperatures compared to when measurements began at various locations. They always mention that the hottest temperature happened since measurements began in 100-200 years, etc. But the point is that we only have had a few weather stations with a longer history. Stockholm is one of the world's oldest weather stations (maybe THE oldest), with uninterrupted meteorological measuring series. That means a lot! We have had 3 years record June month in a row. It is statistically not supposed to happen in a stable climate over 300 years. We are in a climate crisis, and we must act before it's too late — # WeDontHaveTime to wait.
Update: Since I posted this article I have received comments asking about the urban heat effect that could be causing the warming. that is true but it still would be a record. Stockholm University has made an analysis about that here and here is another page with great info about this weather station. Ohh.. and how is the rest of Scandinavia feeling? HOT! But not as hot as northern Canada (49.6C degrees last week). We are in a crisis, and people need to know. Please share this story.
Here is an article about a new study connecting the heat waves in USA-Canada directly to climate change. Also worth sharing.

I was a weather observer at Rainy Pass Lodge in remote Alaska many years ago. After I reported that the owner had never reported a fuel spill into the lake due to upset employees before me, the ownership changed. http://www.theperrinsrainypasslodge.com/ Weather stations are amazing tools and not too expensive to set up. I wish I had this tech now as local weather here is very ... subject to rapid change and the weather forecast sites don't always get it right.

What an interesting article, thanks! A recent $100M investment in the weather startup Climavision, and (separately) proposals for a national climate service in the US may suggest the future of "weather tech", Links to both: https://spacenews.com/climavision-emerges-from-stealth-mode-with-100-million-for-weather-intelligence-network/ https://www.eenews.net/stories/1063736469

It was predicted, scientists warned about it, they informed the politicians who did nothing. Now we are in this mess. The moment to listen to scientists is now or else It will be late.

True. All catastrophic movies always start with a scientist no one is listening to. Now we know and what's needed next is for everyone that has understand whats happening to act. We must have everyone involved in the fight. If everyone on this platform invites 1 friend. We will be 78 000 members. And we can expand from there. Thanks for everything you do Muhammad! Together we still have a chance.

@Rentzhog I agree, we need to be together & we need more strength. We cannot hope that the politicians will wake up soon without public pressure. Wedonthavetime.org is the best way to come together, network & give climate reviews, we have to make the politicians, organisations & businesses act in the right way, in crisis management mode & turn the tide.
