European Electricity Review 2025

The European electricity transition in 2024 was nothing short of inspiring. Solar power soared, overtaking coal for the first time ever, while fossil gas declined for the fifth year running. This proves that change isn’t just possible—it’s happening right now.

Key highlights to celebrate:

🌟 Solar now powers 11% of EU electricity, rising 22% in just one year.
🔥 Fossil gas usage in power has dropped by 20% in five years, helping cut emissions to less than half of their 2007 peak.
💶 Wind and solar saved the EU €59 billion in fossil fuel imports since the European Green Deal began in 2019.

A fascinating report by Ember dives deeper into the EU’s clean energy transformation, outlining the crucial steps needed to keep this momentum going. It’s a must-read for anyone committed to real climate solutions.

This transition isn’t just about hitting numbers—it’s about cleaner air, greater energy independence, and a more sustainable future for everyone. Europe’s story shows that by investing in renewables, we can push fossil fuels to the margins and move toward a world powered by abundance, not scarcity.

There’s more work to be done, but the progress so far should fill us with hope and determination. Let’s keep the momentum going and ensure a thriving planet for generations to come.

We shouldn't forget also that after the cutting of the gas supplies because of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the usage of gas is really gone on much lover levels in all EU countries.
