Preventing Urban Water Loss with Smart Sensors

How a major city’s water utility cut waste by a third

Type of energy user: Digital infrastructure
Bangkok's Metropolitan Waterworks Authority processes and supplies water to over 11 million people every day, but previously lost close to 30% of its water supply through pipeline leakages. To tackle this massive waste, the authority expanded its use of highly accurate smart flowmeters to over 400 units.
These meters transmit high-resolution data the moment a possible leak is detected, providing an early warning system that facilitates rapid network analysis.
This data-driven approach aims to slash total urban water losses from nearly 30% down to 19%, saving immense amounts of the electricity used to process and pump that lost water.
Additional benefits:
  • Real-time monitoring at scale: The system uses GSM-based communication to instantly transmit leak alerts, enabling rapid response across a vast urban network serving over 11 million people.
  • Eliminating human error: By replacing manual measurements with automated, high-precision sensors, the solution improves data accuracy and consistency, strengthening long-term water management.
  • Proven, scalable rollout: Building on technology in use since 2007, the expansion to 400+ smart meters demonstrates how digital upgrades can be scaled over time to transform critical infrastructure.
