Glacier Dam

The cryosphere, made up of all the frozen water on the earth, plays a huge role in the earth’s climate in large part due to its high surface reflectivity – in fact, frozen water is one of the most reflective surfaces on the planet and is responsible for reflecting a large portion of the sun’s radiation back out of the atmosphere. Ocean water has nearly the opposite effect and absorbs much of the sun’s radiation – cycling that absorbed energy into the earth's ecosystem causing accelerated temperature rise. Tidal glaciers account for 70% of ice loss that melts into the ocean; therefore our best line of defense against a depleting cryosphere is to save tidal/calving glaciers. Glacier Dam is not just a regular dam. It functions by blocking ice break offs from the main body of tide water glaciers while allowing the free flow of melted water. Then, as the dam and breakoffs freeze into an ice wall, the space between the dam and the glacier is filled with a slushy water and ice mixture called mélange. The mélange grows and eventually solidifies, freezing back to the main body of the glacier. Glacier Dam will allow glaciers to advance and will reverse the course of accelerated melting. Glacier Dam is our best bet at mitigating many of the impacts of human caused climate change. The way you can make a real difference is to stop burning fuel.

@daryl_cleary absolutely! we have to stop burning fuel already. However, we need to be proactive on climate change as well. If there are no more burning fuel even today, the effects will linger on for decades to come. It is taking longer than it should, to make burning fuel a part of history, which makes taking action on all aspects of climate change simultaneously more urgent.
