The Leuser ecosystem in Sumatra is the only place in the world where tigers, elephants, orangutans and rhinos live together in the wild. This area is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, but due to climate change, illegal hunting and widespread habitat destruction, these species are at risk of extinction. Forest cover in Sumatra has more than halved between 1985 and 2014, which has harmful effects on the local and global climate.
Nayla Azmi founded the "Nuraga Bhumi Institute" in 2021, an all-women Indigenous patrol team to protect 100 hectares of buffer zones between Gunung Leuser National Park and private lands. These buffer zones are vulnerable to poachers and palm oil companies and their destruction can negatively impact the climate.
The Nuraga Bhumi team receives specialized training from organizations like Nature for Change and Gunung Leuser National Park. They learn to use GPS, camera traps and drones to track wildlife and report their findings to park authorities. These actions help reduce habitat destruction, which contributes to climate change.
The Nuraga Bhumi team runs weekly conservation education classes for local children. Teaching children to respect animals from a young age helps prevent hunting and forest destruction. This education is important in raising awareness about the importance of forests in fighting climate change.
The efforts of the Nuraga Bhumi team highlight the importance of Indigenous women in protecting Sumatra’s rainforests and combating climate change. Their deep connection to the environment and conservation skills make them valuable partners in protecting the Leuser ecosystem.

Appreciating nature means seeing its beauty rather than considering it as an asset to be exploited for human benefit or economic gain. It also means taking care of it so that it will continue to offer us benefits for generations to come. These women need to be appreciated because they know what they are doing.

It shows the vital role of local community engagement in conservation efforts. This initiative demonstrates the efforts of marginalized groups to lead impactful environmental stewardship programs at the grassroots level.

@walter_lungayi but most of the Power and system are mostly not in the hands of communities especially the marginalized ones! It is the time that the big organization should not thinking that communities are just “beneficiaries”, we are front liners too! As the matter of fact, our ancestors are the very first Conservationist of our land and water
