Azerbaijan’s actions undermine the very principles that #COP29 stands for. As the country prepares to host a global conference on climate action, it’s a grim irony that it has chosen to silence climate and social justice advocates within its own borders. By imprisoning those who call for accountability and environmental justice, Azerbaijan is contradicting the fundamental values of transparency, community involvement, and human rights that the COP process promotes.
This move signals to the world that Azerbaijan prioritises political control over genuine climate leadership. Detaining climate advocates is not only a violation of human rights but also a clear attempt to obscure environmental shortcomings and escape scrutiny. COP29 is supposed to be a platform for global cooperation, where every nation works together for climate resilience. Yet, Azerbaijan’s actions reveal a willingness to leverage this platform for its own image, sidelining genuine dialogue on environmental justice.
The international community cannot ignore this alarming hypocrisy. Leaders, advocates, and citizens worldwide should demand that Azerbaijan align its internal policies with the spirit of COP29. A country that stifles the voices of its citizens has no right to lead discussions on global solutions for climate resilience. If Azerbaijan wants to be taken seriously as a climate leader, it must first respect and protect those who champion environmental and social justice at home.

Azerbaijan’s hosting of COP29 could undermine the goals of climate advocacy and accountability.

I still don't understand why some people are not concerned with the issue of climate change and it affects us all .

@rosebellendiritu Ironic when you realize those people are hosting this year's Conference Of Parties, right? How will they actually help if they don't believe in climate change?

@rosebellendiritu It’s indeed hard to understand why, given the clear evidence and widespread impacts of climate change.

This is a saddening report, how can they be this hypocritical. The least we all expect from Azerbaijan as they prepare to host COP 29 is not to jeopardize accountability in the roadmap to sustainability.

@joseph_githinji They have to be held accountable for such blatant disregard of human rights while supposedly championing for environmental rights. They should be working with such people, not jailing them.

This is so concerning. It's important for all voices to be heard in the fight against climate change. #WeCanDoIt.

Azerbaijan ought to reconsider and come up with Measures to show that they actually do care about our planet and act accordingly..

@jane_wangui Azerbaijan has the potential for solar, wind, and hydropower development, especially with its vast sunny plains and windy regions.

This is the height of hypocrisy.Hoping to see world leaders call it as it is next week. We cannot have such pretense by the hosts just going Scot free.

@Kevin World leaders will probably not call it because, they are guilty of such atrocities as well. Remember people being jailed for protesting oil in these countries led by the same world leaders? It's hypocrisy I tell you.

This is a mockery of what the summit stands for. If Azerbaijan want the credibility of hosting this summit, they need to start by respecting the rights of those fighting to protect the planet. Climate action without freedom, transparency, and respect for advocacy is an empty promise. COP must stand for justice without compromise.

@princess_nel_268 Couldn't agree more. Your actions have to match your words otherwise it's just empty rhetoric and it's not like we haven't heard and seen that before now, huh?
