Energy as a Service for Industrial Dairy Production

How a dairy producer saved €4 million while cutting emissions

Type of energy user: Light industry
What if major efficiency upgrades required zero upfront capital? A multinational dairy producer partnered with energy service and financial experts to implement an Energy as a Service business model across its production sites.
This allowed the producer to implement over 27 energy efficiency projects, such as replacing traditional compressed air units with highly efficient compressors, entirely without upfront capital investments. The efficiency gains are so substantial that the retrofits are 100% amortized through the achieved energy savings.
These measures deliver 4 million EUR in utility savings and decrease annual CO2 emissions by an amount equivalent to 20,000 passengers flying round-trip between London and New York, proving that massive industrial efficiency upgrades can be achieved completely off balance sheet.
Other benefits:
  • Removing barriers: The Energy-as-a-Service model keeps investments fully off balance sheet, removing one of the biggest barriers to industrial efficiency upgrades while leveraging external expertise and financing.
  • Untapped scale remains: More than 300 additional efficiency measures have already been identified across the company’s sites—highlighting the vast, still-unrealized potential for further savings and emissions cuts.
  • Smarter energy use, not just less: Technologies like heat recovery from compressed air, industrial heat pumps, and electric boilers are turning wasted energy into productive use—boosting overall system efficiency and enabling deeper decarbonization.
