Deforestation plans threatens climate, biodiversity and indiginous people

- Sveaskog intends to log 1000 football fields of forests, devastating to the climate and a death sentence for our community, says Lars Anders Baer, chairman of the Sámi reindeer herding district Luokta-Mávas. It is important to realize that deforestation in general, not just in the Amazon, is hurting our environment. Government-owned Sveaskog, plans huge loggings in the forests in Luokta-Mávas Sámi district, in the north of Sweden. This threatens indigenous land, people and biodiversity in the area. We can not solve the climate crisis unless we start to prioritize nature! We need strong regulations that protects against actions like the ones Sveaskog plans. Right now Sveaskog have put their plans on hold after massive protests from environmental and indigenous groups, stating they want a dialogue. Lets continue to put pressure against Sveaskogs deforestation plans! Read more (Swedish): https://www.natursidan.se/nyheter/efter-protesterna-sveaskog-stoppar-avverkningen/

Sveaskog thanks for the possibility to give our perspective on the role of forest and forestry for combating the climate change and our harvesting plans in the Sámi district of Luokta-Mávas. To be able to counteract the climate change we globally need to rapidly decrease our dependency on fossil resources. For Sweden, the Swedish forest and forestry is the fundament for our climate strategy and our national ambition to achieve a climate neutral economy to 2045. There is no deforestation in Sweden. On the contrary, since the beginning of the 20th century we have doubled the standing forest volumes while we also have increased our harvestings which provide us with renewable materials and energy. Sveaskog is the largest forest company in Sweden with 14 percentage of the forest land. Since the annual regrowth is much higher than the harvesting the Swedish forests are a carbon sink. Only the land holdings of Sveaskog stands for an annual net uptake corresponding to over 6 million tonnes of CO2-eqv which buffers for more than ten percentage of Sweden’s national emissions of CO2. At the same time wood products, fibre-based products and renewable energy made from our forests contribute to reduce fossil use through substitution by 7 million tonnes of CO2-eqv per year. Sveaskog conducts our forestry with great consideration to other values and interests of the forest, like biodiversity and social and cultural values. 70 percentage of the landholdings of Sveaskog correlates with Sámi land and our operations co-exist with the Sámi people. It is important to remember that in most cases we succeed to find solutions that enables this co-existence. In the case of the Sámi village of Luoktas-Mávas we have not been able to reach an agreement. As a result Sveaskog has paused the harvesting plans and our ambition is to continue the dialogue with the Sámi village and together find a solution which both enable their reindeer herding and our needs for managing the forests as a part of our contribution to a climate neutral economy. Their answer is not to trust unfortunately. This forestry industry was promising biofuels from their work and turned out to be just a money grab and misleading the nation in North America at least we know. We know old forest is a great carbon sink and nothing will replace the efficiency of old growth. This is very misleading and I sense an element of lobbying happened here that the government allowed this to happen! They should show real world metrics to prove their point of view! I know they don't have it and they just have words!

Maybe some basic science about the role of trees in CO2 is needed. If not, reforestation needs to be at the forefront of every governments agenda. A recent report here in Australia focused on the impact of trees on life in suburban areas of cities - surprise surprise, the suburbs with lots of trees were cooler and had fewer residential conflicts! Let’s start planting the 3 trillion trees that we need right now!

Deforestation seems to be happening everywhere, as if there is a last ditch attempt by the corporates to get every last penny out of the environment before legislation prevents them from doing so. Unfortunately it has accelerated the destruction of the environment, is desamating biodiversity, making it next to impossible for the human race to reverse climate change. Putting the last nail in the coffin in their continued pursuit of wealth. If we can't get the public inspired to rise up and effect change I genuinely feel our battle is lost. Sad and worrying times.

It is sad, the situation is cynical but the consumers are helping the corporates by buying whatever unsustainable and environmental exhausting products they are producing
