Maximizing District Heating Flexibility with Digital Twins

How digital simulation lowers heat losses and cuts carbon emissions

For which type of energy user: Heavy industry
As district heating companies transition to renewable energy sources operating at lower temperatures, managing thermal storage becomes increasingly complex. In this example, Mantovas district heating operator SEI solved this by implementing a Digital Twin solution.
Rather than building new physical infrastructure to handle loads, this digital tool considers end-user demand and network dynamics to forecast optimal charging cycles in real time. By dynamically shaving off supply peaks, the solution lowers overall heat losses and maximizes the heating grids’ real world efficiency, decreasing annual CO2 emissions by an amount equivalent to taking over 100 cars off the road strictly through software optimization.
Other benefits:
  • Enhances operational decision-making through real-time, data-driven insights into network performance and demand patterns.
  • Defers or eliminates the need for costly physical infrastructure investments by maximizing existing asset utilization.
  • Reduces operational risk by enabling predictive control of thermal storage without disrupting supply reliability.
