In order to reduce emissions across the value chain, the automotive industry needs to change the way it builds cars. This includes the material that goes into them. One way in which Volvo Cars is doing this is moving away from leather and towards bio-based sources like Nordico. This new material consists of textiles made from recycled PET bottles, wood remnants from sustainable forestry and corks recycled from the wine industry. Nordico has a 74% lower carbon footprint than the leather we currently use. September 20th-26th was Climate Week NYC, to which Volvo Cars was a Silver Sponsor. This year’s theme, “Getting It Done”, symbolizes the importance of acting here and now, instead of only making pledges for 2030 or 2050 Volvo Cars was featured in several speaking slots during the week, and our message was simple: We have a responsibility to reduce our climate impact, and it makes business sense. And we need to act now to reach our 2030 and 2040 goals. As our CFO Björn Annwall said: "We have our Race to Zero. We aim to be climate neutral by 2040, but with all races, as you know, you need to get off to a good start, so we've been very clear that we need to reduce our total lifecycle carbon footprint per vehicle by 40% by 2025." Volvo are bringing the idea to the table that it is not just the engine of a vehicle that contributes to climate change. The vehicle, its manufacture, delivery, use, maintenance and disposal all need to be considered.

Thats very interesting. Using waste biomass is a great way of locking the carbon in and preventing it from entering back into the atmosphere through incineration or decay. Can I ask a question about the material? Can it be recycled after use? Can it be part of a circular economy? What is the recommended method for its end of life?

Some really good questions there, Connor. I've not been able to find any answers online anywhere. Hopefully, Volvo will respond.
