In a major boost for green financing in Sweden, the European Investment Fund (EIF) is investing up to €30 million (approximately 320 million SEK) in the newly launched Svenska Hållbarhetsfonden 1 (The Swedish Impact Lending Fund). The fund aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in their sustainability transition by providing loans outside the traditional banking system.

What is Svenska Hållbarhetsfonden? Svenska Hållbarhetsfonden 1 is Sweden’s first Impact Lending Fund, combining financing with clear sustainability goals. Managed by Svenska Hållbarhetsfonden Förvaltnings AB, the fund targets SMEs that need capital to invest in green technologies, adapt to EU sustainability reporting (CSRD), and develop climate-friendly business models. With a target of raising at least 800 million SEK (approx €75 Million) it aims to fill the financing gap left by traditional banks’ reduced credit appetite. Why This Matters The investment from EIF, supported by the EU’s InvestEU program, highlights the growing need for accessible green financing. Thomas Östros, Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group, emphasizes: "SMEs are key drivers of innovation and growth. To stay competitive during the green transition, they need access to sustainable financing." Joakim Friis, CEO of Svenska Hållbarhetsfonden, adds: "We’re thrilled to have EIF’s backing. This investment validates our mission to accelerate sustainable business growth in Sweden. The demand for our financing solutions is huge, and this support allows us to scale up."
