The Toronto-based tech & reforestation company Flash Forest aims to plant one billion trees in Canada and the world by 2028. Founded by brothers Cameron and Bryce Jones and Angelique Ahlstrom, the company uses modified commercial drones to plant post-wildfire sites that are too dangerous for human planters.
Flash Forest also targets mid- to high-severity fires, where entire forests have burned and natural regeneration is less likely to occur. The company relies on aerial mapping software to ensure the seed pods are planted in areas where trees will grow.
In spring 2021, Flash Forest completed the largest drone reforestation project in Canadian history, planting over 300,000 seed pods of 19 different species at 13 sites across Canada. By spring 2022, the company had partnered with federal and provincial governments, private landowners, forestry companies, and First Nations communities to plant 150,000 trees on land they each own or manage. The company plans to deploy over one million seed pods this year.
Flash Forest doesn't only focus on quantity but wants to make sure it's planting healthy forests. That's why it relies on native species with an aim to maximize biodiversity and rebuild forests, not just monocultures, and to achieve a desired stocking standard of 1,500 stems per hectare. Pretty cool, especially in regions where forest fires will become more common with time.

Drones are fast and can access large areas in a day. With the right conditions, we will have new forests coming up everywhere

Great especially when they focus on quality and will reach out a large portion where maybe it may not be possible for humans to reach out easily
