The first day of the STHLM+50 Climate Hub started with an unusual 350-kilogram guest on stage, as Alfa Laval and SSAB revealed their latest collaboration: the world's first heat exchanger made with fossil-free steel.
On May 31, everyone was talking about this 350 kilogram heat exchanger at the STHLM+50 Climate Hub
Alfa Laval is a global leader in heat exchanger technologies, equipment that is used all around the world to heat and cool different fluids and gasses, in various industries or in heating and cooling of homes and impacting the lives of millions of people. So it’s easy to grasp that there is a lot at stake in making them carbon neutral.
“If you look at the whole energy efficiency, and how much carbon reduction is needed to reach the Paris Agreement, 40% has to come from energy efficiency and these are technologies we have right in front of us”
Thomas Møller, President Energy Division, Alfa Laval
Alfa Laval has been developing energy-efficient heat exchangers that are 50 per cent more efficient than traditional technology. During the STHLM+50 Climate Hub we also announced a new collaboration with the Swedish steel company SSAB. The steel industry alone emits 7 per cent of the world’s global emissions, for Sweden, this number reaches 10 per cent. That’s why SSAB has partnered with LKAB and Vattenfall to bring the first fossil-free steel to the market.
“In 2016 when we started to talk about this the rest of the steel industry said it’s impossible, it can’t be done but now we are showing that it can” Eva Petursson, Executive Vice President and Head of research and innovation at SSAB
Now SSAB is using the steel in different applications and with heat exchangers being made of 40 per cent steel this collaboration and the production of the Concept Zero heat exchanger will have a major impact on the race to zero. It will also be an important step in Alfa Laval’s journey to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Our goal is to have the first unit made with hydrogen-reduced steel ready for 2023.

50 years after the very first UN Environment Conference, placing nature and poverty at the forefront of the international agenda, Stockholm welcomed the world again in June 2022. Together with partners, We Don'tHave Time and UNDP hosted a public arena for the entire week of Stockholm+50, leading up to World Environment Day 2022.
