In May 2024, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) signed pivotal partnership agreements with the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN), and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) during the ARE Energy Access Investment Forum (EAIF 2024). These collaborations aim to reduce operational costs for SMEs, promote rural industrialization, and alleviate poverty by providing alternative and affordable power solutions tailored to the needs of Nigerian SMEs. As part of these initiatives, SMEDAN, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched a solar-powered garment-making center in Abuja. This facility offers at least 120 entrepreneurs daily access to modern garment-making equipment without the burden of power costs, machinery purchases, or maintenance. The center operates on 254 locally manufactured solar panels, generating 240 kVA to ensure a sustainable and uninterrupted energy supply. This initiative not only reduces business costs but also promotes clean energy usage among SMEs.
