The release of a durable iPhone

Hey Apple, why not release a durable, reliable iPhone that could be used at least seven or eight years, stretching to ten years? An IPhone made for the not-so-anxious customers, the ones who doesn’t care that much about the latest colour in fashion, the few extra camera mega pixels or the latest designer changes in the corners of the shield. But who cares about the future. Our kids. Our environment. Our climate. This iPhone would of course be 100 % made out or recycled components, and it would also be 100 % recyclable after a decade of good use. If a chip or other component needed to be replaced, it should be an easy thing for the customer to do. Apple could even charge us 10 dollars for major software upgrades, as long as we wouldn't have to buy a new phone all the time. So what do you say Apple, time to create a truly modern IPhone?

Great idea! Apple can also load the green phones with consumer-focused climate action, green habit tools, and sustainability content. Using the phone, apps and content together could turn Apples phones into powerful action tools & increase their relevancy to a world in crisis.

I love this post!! I completely agree! This is why I’ve been using Swappie to buy second hand Iphones - I will never support Apple in buying a new one before they start to take some responsibility for our kids and this planet! It’s insane to program something that actually lowers the quality of the product in advance, and I don’t get how they dare to continue during an on-going climate crisis. Apple should really be ashamed.

Built in obsolescence is an actual strategy that has been used for decades.. So shocking! Designing something to break after a short period of time so that you're forced to buy another one should be illegal. @apple design their chargers to break after a year. If they were good at designing products they would be more durable. Buy Less, buy local and buy second hand wherever possible!

I agree! Buy: -Less -Local -Second hand I woukd take the liberty here and would state that strategy of obsolescence is like lying and cheating. Shame on all those organisations and their strategy masters who devise such techniques into their strategy.

This reminds me of Fairphone and the earlier Phonebloks - two initiatives to make modular, upgradeable smartphones. It would require a different business model, but it would bring several benefits to both consumers and the planet.

I am sure that Apple is not the one to follow best business model for factory workers, consumers and for the planet

Thats a good post but I think @apple would never listen or do any such thing. Planned obsolescence is practiced in many industries and is a big cause of toxic and polluting waste which is ruining our planet Earth.

Pegatron factories that produce Apple products have forced their workers to work 105 hour per week shifts continuously for up to 10 weeks with wages below the global poverty level, and the other 55 hours per week trapped in dorm rooms with bed bugs and mold. Apple receives a 40% profit margin on their iPhones, yet they only pass on a few dollars per iPhone to their factories for wages. Several suicides have occurred at Foxconn factories that produce Apple products, and workers have sometimes been forced to prepare formal apologies for just one defect. Apple has not issued a former apology for their working conditions, but rather claims that they are dedicated to ensuring that everyone in their supply chain is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

The worst of the facts is thatbthe people who are elected by us know all the information or maybe more alarming facts @callistemon has mentioned here but they do nothing.

Great idea, even small things like easy to replace batteries would increase the lifecycle with several years.
