The Factory That Heats Itself

How a heat pump cut costs by 85%, paying for itself in under three years

For what type of energy user: Light Industry
Why buy heating when your own machines already generate it? A manufacturing site in Sweden captured low-temperature waste heat from its heavy plate presses and put it to work.
Using a natural ammonia-based heat pump, they elevated that recovered heat to 65°C. This closed-loop system now provides all the space heating and hot water needed for both the factory floor and the corporate headquarters. It proves that energy efficiency does not have to be complicated to be highly resourceful, as the system cut purchased district heating by 85%, drastically shrank its carbon emissions, and achieved a 100% return on investment in under three years.
Additional benefits:
  • Future-proof and climate-safe technology: The system uses natural ammonia as a refrigerant, avoiding harmful synthetic alternatives while achieving up to twice the efficiency of standard commercial heat pump solutions.
  • Compact and resource-efficient design: Advanced semi-welded plate heat exchangers enable high performance with just 40 kg of refrigerant, reducing both system footprint and environmental risk.
  • Proven, long-term performance: In operation since 2013, the system demonstrates that industrial heat recovery is not just effective—but durable, reliable, and scalable over time.
