This climate love goes to Rudolf and The System Change Foundation for the exceptional event of the World Systemic Forum. The event aims to connect people across disciplines and generations to encourage them to rethink. Going through the website of the event*, I found interesting topics like "creating change through food systems" and "climate resilience by considering carbon as an asset class" related to the biggest challenge we are facing, i.e., climate change. Hope to see more great events like this bringing the world together to beat the challenge of climate change. * https://thesystemchange.org/world-systemic-forum/

Political will to save ozone got us this. We need a stronger political will to get rid of fossil fuels. Phase out fast!
•
28 w
I partially agree. We were also very lucky in the late 1980's. Why? We had at the time placed all eggs in one basket, that was to a large extent controlled by a huge chemical multinational coorporation: @DuPont. Political will was essential in the process that lead to the Montreal protocol in 1987 but let me add: a market based solution from DuPoint putting self-interest before the good of a livable Earth . Without them and their obstructive force on the world we could today have inhabited a much less livable planet. And likely, many f us would not have lived at all today to be honest. Hade #ecocide been put into practice and law then, DuPont might not have been around today either. In short one can say DuPonts acting is a schoolbook example of what #BigOil #BigTobacco are doning to humanity. Clear links are obvious with the climate crisis of today. Please let me tell you the story about of the time leading up to the ban on chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). B t w, the ban was not so fast, rather slow and not universal and immediate, CFCs are still being used and leaked into the worlds atmosphere today, mainly from old dumped fridges/freezers and air conditioners - read more here https://research.noaa.gov/2023/04/03/the-montreal-protocol-banned-this-family-of-ozone-depleting-chemicals-why-are-some-still-increasing/) and because poor legislation in some developing countries. So in brief leading up to the ban of CFS's and the Montreal Protocol, which a story often use as an example of that humanity can fix this (I agree but not in the way it´s often portraid = we did it with CFCs - #WeCanDoIt this time #WeDontHaveTime and Ingmar Rentzhog used this examples in presentations too. The problem is - the climate and BigOil #BigGas tar sands etc is sooo much more into the human organism than a relatively quick fix (i.e exchange CFCs into HFCs). The at the time leading manufacturer of CFCs was DuPont corporation. They tried their best and succeeded to stall and obstruct justice until they had come up with a commercial product to replace CFCs, namely HFCs. In the time between they did their best to change politicians minds and public opinion spreading fake news and doubt about the scientist studies showing the clear negative effects already in the 1970s. So well into 1987 DuPont made sure they wouldn't loose hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue they had come up with the replacement chemical - and yes HFCs are also bad for climate - a partial phasing out also HFCs under the 2016 Kigali Protocol. How do I know this? Read more here: 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorofluorocarbon 2. And do read the story here https://unfccc.int/blog/what-the-ozone-layer-teaches-us-about-climate-action 3. And here https://research.noaa.gov/2023/04/03/the-montreal-protocol-banned-this-family-of-ozone-depleting-chemicals-why-are-some-still-increasing/. 5. And for those wanting to know more go online or to your public library or archive to reade the study: "Ethics of Du Pont's CFC Strategy 1975–1995", Smith B. Journal of Business Ethics, Volume 17, Number 5, April 1998, pp. 557–568(12)" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorofluorocarbon#cite_note-Ethics-32) 6. And https://www.sciencediplomacy.org/article/2020/learning-success-lessons-in-science-and-diplomacy-montreal-protocol And and I quote @UNFCC in their article lineked to above: "So everything is fine now? Not quite. The bad news is that we still need air conditioners and fridges which need gases to power them. Those gases are hydrofluorocarbons AKA HFCs, which, while they don’t damage the ozone layer directly, do contribute to global warming, and are their use is gradually being reduced under the 2016 Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Also, the long life of chemicals released into the atmosphere means their effects are still seen decades after they are no longer in use. Is that why the hole is getting bigger again? While the hole in the ozone layer this past winter was one of the largest since monitoring began forty years ago, a large part of that was down to a polar vortex - high winds – that trapped freezing air over the North Pole for several weeks. Those winds created a sort of circular cage-like effect, which created high-altitude clouds. Those clouds, combined with man-made pollution (such as chlorine and bromine), created a huge hole about three times the size of Greenland. Despite this, the overall trend is good, and the Montreal Protocol has made a real difference, and illustrated the importance of global, multilateral cooperation in the fight against climate change." So my question to #WeDontHaveTime and you is: do we have time for looking into the story behind the "easy" story #WeCanDoIt Muhammad Fahd Khan?
•

The ozone layer has already been depleted, so we must seek ways of stopping that as well as creating ways of coping with it

The relation between the banking and fossil fuel industries is complex and closely intertwined. Banks provide loans, investments, and other services to fossil fuel companies, and in turn, fossil fuel companies rely on banks to finance their operations and growth. Banks are also exposed to potential risks associated with the extractive industries (environmental and reputational risks, for example) and have a duty to ensure their investments are in line with their values and fiduciary responsibility. There is a growing global movement to hold banks and other financial institutions accountable for their financing of fossil fuel projects and companies, and to encourage responsible banking practices.

Tom Steyer is one of the billionars who is investing in the people and solutions driving climate progress. His investment firm Galvanize Climate Solutions will begin buying and upgrading property across the US with an aim to achieve net zero emissions in three years without using offsets. The Galvanize real estate arm will get assistance from the firm’s in-house team of scientists and tech experts, called Impact. The team includes scientist Howard Branz, a former program director of the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E incubator, and also seeks to fund startups to develop technology the team can apply to buildings and retrofits. “We’re trying to show that doing this is a good investment from an absolute, straight up financial point of view,” said Steyer. “The impact and the returns are linked; it’s not a trade-off. AUGA group is the largest vertically-integrated organic food company in Europe. The group manages about 96,000 acres of organically certified arable land and develops a sustainable farming model, based on new technologies. The company produces a wide range of organic food products. AUGA group follows a closed loop organic farming principle where the sustainable activities supplement each other. Crops are used for cattle feed and straw goes to mushroom compost. Livestock manure is used to fertilize crops and make compost. Later, it also becomes fertilizer for crops. The group takes care of the soil by enriching it in natural ways, practices crop rotation and feed the soil with organic fertilizers only. This way, the land becomes more fertile and resistant to erosion, so that the future generations can use it. AUGA is committed to addressing the climate change problem. It measures its emissions, have reduction targets, and a strategy to achieve the targets. Read and image: http://augaorganics.com/na/en/our-story/

Multiple oil pipeline leaks in the Niger Delta, that affected local farmers and communities is what started a long battle in court. Friends of the Earth brought the case to Dutch court that found Shell's Nigerian subsidiary SPDC to be responsible for the oil spills, ordering Shell to pay for damages to farmers. Environmental & human rights Lawyer Steven Donziger calls it a landmark victory, that will influence other cases against big oil in the future. “This legal ruling knocks out a key defense used by the industry in Dutch courts in a way that will have positive ramifications for similar cases in countries across the world. Bad for the oil industry. Great for the planet!” Well done to the team at Friends of the Earth Netherlands for this historic win! During the UN climate conference COP27, Electrolux participated in the COP27 Climate Hub broadcast, an on-site and digital broadcast hosted by We Don’t Have Time from Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. Sarah Schaefer, VP of Sustainability in Europe for Electrolux, joined the broadcast from London, UK to talk about how Electrolux works to empower people to eat more sustainably. Inspiring people to eat more sustainably is a massive challenge, not only in terms of choosing the right groceries but also in the significant food waste issue that we’re facing. The consumer is always the most difficult actor to influence, and Electrolux is in a perfect position to empower and support consumers of food to eat more sustainably. As a provider of home appliances, Electrolux can impact how long food can be stored before it needs to be thrown out, and how it’s cooked to make sustainable choices more appealing. This is the point that Sarah brought to the COP27 Climate Hub. When people know how to properly use their equipment, for example by setting their fridges and freezers to the right temperature (4 degrees for the fridge and -18 for the freezer secures an ideal balance between keeping food fresh and using the minimum amount of energy) and at the same time get educated on how we can make delicious food from groceries that are more sustainably produced, they are in a much better position to reduce food waste and reduce the emissions from the food that they eat. The right kitchen equipment can also make tasty food out of leftovers that might otherwise have been thrown away. Making sustainable food choices more commonplace and accessible will benefit us in terms of carbon emissions, nutritional health, and financial costs by 2030. Sarah ended her panel participation with a message to policymakers: “My call to action is first of all to help policymakers and shape the debate to explain that there’s a clear link between what we grow and what we eat and how our lives will be in terms of the health of our children and our planet. Every time we eat we have a choice of what we put on our plate.” https://youtu.be/8sZctpxYYGI?t=9970 Rewatch the COP27 Climate Hub anytime on We Don’t Have Time Play.

In October, we were able to make a big leap for climate protection in Europe. Two numbers we are particularly proud of: - 💸 For the first time, we were able to crack the 100,000 euro mark in monthly donations. Amazing! We want to sincerely thank everyone who supports our work at ForTomorrow. - 📜 We also set a new record for buying and cancelling emissions rights in one month: 920 units! That means that the industry in the EU will be forced to emit 920 tons less CO2. Together with all ForTomorrow supporters, we can already offset a total of over 16,000 tons of CO2. We do this by planting 31,314 trees and cancelling 9,339 EU emission rights. These numbers give us the motivation to solve the climate crisis. We look forward to continuing to drive climate protection forward in Europe – together with all the people who want to support us. P.S. Volvo Cars is taking an ethical stand for animal welfare in its fully electric cars. Starting with the new C40 Recharge, all new fully electric Volvo models will be completely leather-free. In coming years, Volvo Cars will launch a completely new family of pure electric cars. By 2030 it aims to offer only fully electric cars – all of them leather-free. As part of its ambitions to go completely leather-free, Volvo Cars is working actively to find high-quality and sustainable sources for many materials currently used in the wider car industry. By 2025, the company is aiming for 25 per cent of the material in new Volvo cars to consist of recycled and bio-based content, as it looks to become a fully circular business by 2040. As part of its climate action plans, it also aims for all of its immediate suppliers, including material suppliers, to use 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025. The company’s move towards leather-free interiors is also driven by a concern about the negative environmental impacts of cattle farming, including deforestation. Livestock is estimated to be responsible for around 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, with the majority coming from cattle farming. Instead of leather interior options, Volvo Cars will offer its customers alternatives such as high-quality sustainable materials made from bio-based and recycled sources. For example, Nordico, a new interior material created by Volvo Cars will consist of textiles made from recycled material such as PET bottles, bio-attributed material from sustainable forests in Sweden and Finland, and corks recycled from the wine industry – setting a new standard for premium interior design. This material will make its debut in the next generation of Volvo models. Volvo Cars will also continue to offer wool blend options from suppliers that are certified to source responsibly, as the company looks to ensure full traceability and animal welfare in its wool supply chain. “Being a progressive car maker means we need to address all areas of sustainability, not just CO2 emissions,” said Stuart Templar, director of global sustainability at Volvo Cars. “Responsible sourcing is an important part of that work, including respect for animal welfare. Going leather-free inside our pure electric cars is a good next step towards addressing this issue.”

Microplastics are hazardous to our environment, oceans, human health, and biodiversity. Unfortunately, they are rampant in our ecosystem, where they are harming almost all life forms on land or below water. One way that we, the humans, are letting micropollutants into our oceans and into our own bodies is through our laundry wastewater. Thanks to Cleaner Seas group, a business who is on a mission to save the world from microplastic pollution. This business is enabling all of us to be a part of the solution. They have developed Indikon-1, a retrofit microfiber filter for washing machines. It prevents the microplastics from entering our ecosystem. It captures up to 90% of microfibers in our wash cycles, even the smallest 1 micron microfibres. To keep the solution circular, the microfiber filter has a returnable cartridge. One cartridge works for approximately 100 washes. There is an indicator light that tells when to change the cartridge. All you need to do is replace the cartridge with a fresh one (you get 2 cartridges with your first order) and send the full one back to Cleaner Seas Group. They will harvest the microfibers and refurbish the cartridge, making it ready for reuse. Visit: https://www.cleaner-seas.com/products/indikon-1 Image: https://www.cleaner-seas.com/

💚 To make it clear we at @enablesus support VW's EV strategy and progress which is one of the more ambitious in the auto industry. 🖤 However, this add is misleading (it is from Instagram in Denmark on 27th Nov. 2022, and there are a few similar ones from VW). It is misleading because no EV is zero emissions. First, every vehicle has embodied emissions from it's manufacture. Typically btw. 4 and 5 tCO2 per vehicle. Second, electricity from charging is not zero emissions. With the exception of systems directly connected to renewable or nuclear power plants, which not many homes have 🙂 That being said EVs in North America and Europe do have x2 - x10 less climate impact than efficient fossil fuel cars. The best impact for EVs is found in 🇸🇪 Sweden and 🇳🇴Norway.

King Charles III has officially banned foie gras from menus at royal residences due to cruelty concerns. Typically, the so-called delicacy is made by forcefully feeding ducks or geese until their livers become engorged and fatty. The monarch’s decision was confirmed in a letter sent this month by Tony Johnstone-Burt, the Master of King Charles’ household, to the United Kingdom arm of animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). “I can affirm that neither the Royal Household nor the Royal Residences purchase foie gras, nor are there any plans to amend this policy,” the letter stated.
