At the Kalset Mjölk farm, the farm's manure is optimized by investing in biogas. This has resulted in a biogas plant that supplies the farm with electricity and heat and the manure has been refined. Watch the film from Lantbruket's film festival about the farm Kalset Mjölk! Dec 12, 2022 WWF's project Baltic Stewardship Initiative wants to contribute to increasing the exchange of knowledge and experience between farmers, and between farmers and experts. We therefore highlight good examples from farmers who implement solutions on their farms to reduce the leakage of plant nutrients into surrounding waterways, lakes and oceans and who optimize their use of plant nutrients. Kalset Mjölk is run by the Samuelsson family together with their employees and the farm has an organic herd of just over 250 dairy cows. It is Nissan that is the catchment area for Kalset Mjölk and flows into the Kattegatt in Laholmsbukten. To optimize the farm's manure, Anna and Hans Samuelsson have invested in biogas. Through a closed loop, the farm's resources can be used to the max. The biogas plant now supplies the farm with electricity and heat, and the manure has been refined. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIV_DlpCrJo

The Indus Dolphin in Pakistan, for example, has increased from 1,200 individuals 20 years ago to 2,000 today, and now modern technology will increase the chances of conserving and increasing their numbers. Researchers from WWF have in fact started to equip river dolphins with satellite transmitters. Normally, it is difficult to study river dolphins because they live in dark, murky waters and only come to the surface briefly to breathe. I had the opportunity to attend to WWF's presentation of the report, "LIVING PLANET REPORT 2022" (https://www.wwf.se/rapport/living-planet-report/) and the first feeling is that one becomes sad and disappointed that we humans do not understand better. However, this does not apply to everyone, as many natives have long since understood that we "are nature" and the damage we inflict on nature, we inflict on ourselves. The hope is that this report can raise these issues to a new level and that we together can start to do the right thing. https://www.worldwildlife.org

Nature emergency! WWF’s Living Planet Report 2022 reveals a devastating 69% drop in wildlife populations 🐨🦧🐬🐘🐸 on average in less than a lifetime • Tropical regions face wildlife populations plummeting at a staggering rate • Freshwater species populations have suffered an 83% fall • The report’s Living Planet Index shows that there is no time to lose in securing a nature-positive society Monitored wildlife populations* - mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish - have seen a devastating 69% drop on average since 1970, according to WWF’s Living Planet Report (LPR) 2022. The report highlights the stark outlook of the state of nature and urgently warns governments, businesses and the public to take transformative action to reverse the destruction of biodiversity. Commenting on the findings, Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International, said: “We face the double emergencies of human-induced #climate change and #biodiversity loss, threatening the well-being of current and future generations. WWF is extremely worried by this new data showing a devastating fall in wildlife populations, in particular in tropical regions that are home to some of the most biodiverse landscapes in the world.” “At the #COP15 biodiversity conference this December, leaders have an opportunity to reset our broken relationship with the natural world and deliver a healthier, more sustainable future for all with an ambitious nature-positive global biodiversity agreement,” said Dr Lambertini. “In the face of our escalating nature crisis, it’s essential this agreement delivers immediate action on the ground, including through a transformation of the sectors driving nature loss, and financial support to developing countries.” Read the full report: http://wwf.se/lpr #LivingPlanet #LPR2022 #WWF

Looking forward to reading the report
At the recent STHLM +50 Climate Hub, Marco Lambertini, WWF International’s Director General, offered a keynote address on the imperative of becoming a nature-positive society by 2030. Looking back 50 years to the first UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972, Marco speaks in his address about how the impacts of economic development on the environment were already a concern then – and that, today, those concerns are greater than they have ever been. Nature conservation, or nature loss, “is an issue of human security,” says Marco. Considering nature loss, the “twin crisis” of the climate crisis, Marco looks at the differences in how these two interconnected crises are being addressed globally. While we still have a lot of work to do – and quickly – to address the climate crisis, there is at least a clear destination that many people, businesses and governments are pressing toward: net zero. This is not yet true for the crisis of nature loss. “We need a global goal for nature as clear, measurable and time-bound as the one we have for climate,” says Marco in the keynote. “We’re advocating that, for nature, net zero is not enough, because we have already lost a lot of nature, biodiversity, habitats and nature has the ability to bounce back, if given a chance...” “The goal that we’re advocating for is a nature positive goal by 2030. Carbon neutral: net zero emissions by 2050. Nature positive: net positive biodiversity by 2030. So that by the end of the decade we’re going to have more nature, not less, than today. More forests, fish in oceans and rivers, pollinators in farmlands.” Watch Marco’s ten-minute address, and hear what he has to say about a Paris-style agreement on nature, to get us “moving from a nature-negative society and economy to a nature-positive one.” https://youtu.be/1QeKV76wzAo?t=9865 ABOUT STHLM+50 CLIMATE HUB 50 years after the very first UN Environment Conference, placing nature and poverty at the forefront of the international agenda, Stockholm welcomed the world again in June 2022. Do you know about the sustainable cultivation of vanilla in Madagascar? It is a pretty cool project led by WWF and a local community association "Andrafainkona Miaro Tontolo Iainana". Vanilla is here cultivated by local communities at the foot of the rainforests and grows without altering the ecosystems. Because yes this vanilla does not use pesticides but natural solutions like the help of gold-dusted day geckos, a species that feeds on insect pests 🦎 They also plant Neem, a natural insecticide, around the crops, as well as other plants that retain moisture. The alignment of the plantations is also favored to facilitate the circulation of wind and water. And this vanilla is not only produced sustainably... it also provides a decent income for communities in the Sava region! Why is this important? Madagascar is one of the richest ecosystems, welcoming all kinds of animal species that are found nowhere else. Unfortunately, this unique heritage is about to disappear. The primary forests that covered 30% of the island in the middle of the last century now cover only 12%. They are cut or burned for clearing or grazing, at a rate of 36 000 hectares per year (!). WWF SWEDEN DEMANDS A CARBON BUDGET THROUGH NEW PETITION If we are to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius, we need to act now. According to the IPCC we need to reduce the worlds carbon emissions by half before 2030 if we are to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement. Therefore, we want Sweden to adopt a legally binding carbon budget. We need this in order to: 👉 Fulfill our part of the Paris Agreement 👉 Make sure our generation takes responsibility and do not leave the consequences for future generations to take care of. As of this moment we have gathered over 8800 signatures demanding a carbon budget and we are halfway before we close the signature list. Our goal is for all parties of the parliament to agree to this demand before the Swedish elections this upcoming September, in order to ensure that a carbon budget will be established by the new government. Sweden should reduce CO2 emissions by more than 20% already this year to stay in line with the Paris Agreement, according to a new report by WWF. If Sweden continues as today, its entire emissions budget will be used up already during the next parliamentary term (2022-2026). This is the conclusion of a new national carbon budget produced by researchers at Uppsala University. "If we want to avoid excessive sacrifices that dramatically impact everyone's lives, we need to act now," says Gustaf Lind, Secretary-General of WWF. Ahead of the elections (which will take place in September 2022), WWF is calling for a national emissions budget in line with the one produced by this report. According to the budget, Sweden had a total carbon budget of 170 million tonnes at the beginning of 2022. The current level of Sweden's emissions is just under 50 million tonnes annually, which means that the budget will be completely used up by 2025 (3.5 years) if emissions continue as they are today. To deliver on the Paris Agreement, the world's countries must reach zero emissions by 2050. If the overall budget is to make sense, some richer countries need to reach zero emissions sooner to give developing countries a fair chance. Under this budget, Sweden would need to reduce its emissions by 21% every year from this year onwards. If this substantial reduction in emissions does not happen this year, emissions next year will have to be cut almost twice as much. "If we ourselves do not meet our commitments in the Paris Agreement, we cannot expect other countries to do so either. That's why Sweden needs to take the lead and introduce a national carbon budget that requires annual emissions reductions of more than 20% if we are, to be honest about trying to stay within the 1.5-degree target," says Madeleine van der Veer, Head of Social Policy at WWF. Time for Sweden to take the lead in the ecological transition, because we don't have time. In our path to net-zero and decarbonization, nature has a big role to play, and today, more than 130 countries have already included nature-based solution actions in their national climate plans under the Paris Agreement. Research shows that nature-based solutions and the broader land sector could contribute up to 30% of the climate mitigation needed by 2050 to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals. But what are they and how do they work? This article by the World Wildlife Fund for nature explains what are nature-based solutions and how harnessing the power of nature to address societal challenges such as climate change can benefit us all and the planet. The article also showcases different solutions that have been implemented around the world from tree planting to coral reef restoration. 🌳 WWF also points out that nature-based solutions aren’t always the best answer giving the example of planting non-native trees to offset carbon emissions. This can be detrimental to biodiversity and can even reduce the availability of water. I recommend having a read at the article before Friday's broadcast! https://www.worldwildlife.org/stories/what-are-nature-based-solutions-and-how-can-they-help-us-address-the-climate-crisis
