Juha Kankkunen, a Finnish driver who won the Toyota world championship, co-drove the car with Jimmi Gathu, a well-known actor and media figure in his native Kenya. On its path to becoming carbon neutral, the company made clear that it would offer a wide range of vehicles. https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/sports/2023/06/23/toyota-demonstrates-hilux-gr-s-mhev-concept-at-wrc-safari-rally/ Juha Kankkunen commented, "I'm 100% sure that this type of car will fit in Africa very well because there are still long drives and it's very challenging to charge electric cars, after the demonstration. Fuel savings translate into a reduction in CO2. Hybrid vehicles reduce CO2 emissions, and Africa is a good market for these vehicles. The future is that.

In FuelsEurope's "Clean Fuels for All" campaign, which explains the history, purpose, and potential of sustainable fuels in achieving the European Union's climate neutrality targets by 2050, the WRC will be a key case study. The campaign will have information available in the service areas of every WRC round held in Europe. A Brussels-based organization called Fuels Europe represents businesses that produce and distribute liquid fuel. It aims to draw attention to how important renewable fuels are to the movement to decarbonize the transportation industry. When compared to fossil-based fuels, sustainable fuels have no or very low net CO2 emissions during production and use. They are liquid fuels of non-petroleum origin. In the shift to a climate-neutral economy, they have a strategic role to play. https://www.wrc.com/en/news/2023/wrc/wrcs-sustainable-fuels-approach-validated-in-fuelseurope-partnership/

In response to growing calls for Japan's top automaker to do more to combat climate change, Toyota announced on Tuesday that it wants to produce an all solid-state battery as part of its ambitious ambitions for battery electric vehicles.By 2027, Toyota Motor Corporation hopes to have a solid-state battery available for purchase. The business stated in a statement that charging times, one of the major downsides of electric vehicles, would be reduced to 10 minutes or less. By increasing its battery EV lineup and advancing technologies, the company expects to ship 1.5 million vehicles by 2026. With the evolution of the vehicle's operating system, the next-generation battery EV will also enable customization of the 'driving feel,' with a focus on acceleration, turning, and stopping," it stated. Electr https://apnews.com/article/toyota-evs-hydrogen-battery-climate-cd7730dbb9c157cf1663d39a3b39778e ic vehicle owners typically charge their vehicles overnight while parked in their garages. That's why Toyota has been touting hybrids as the superior option for so long. A hybrid vehicle has both an electric motor and a gasoline engine, and it recharges itself as it drives.

Journalists in developing and middle-income nations can now cover environmental issues with the help of Earth Journalism Network. They have earned a reputation as a worldwide organization connecting journalists from all corners of the globe. The network has begun a two-year media capacity building project called the Mediterranean Media Initiative in March 2022 in response to the worsening conservation crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The initiative's goal is to equip journalists and media organizations in the region to report on marine issues with expertise. Media coverage and investigations help citizens hold their governments to account for policies and decisions that are sometimes made in secret or after lengthy deliberations at the highest levels. EJN's goal is to make sure that all voices, not just those of the usual talking heads from industry and international NGOs, are heard by increasing the frequency and quality of reporting on fisheries and other marine management issues in the media. https://earthjournalism.net/projects/mediterranean-media-initiative-building-expert-marine-reporting-capacity-of-journalists-in

The field of climate science is intricate, with murky policy ramifications. Therefore, climate analytics make an effort to disseminate cutting-edge research on climate science, policy, and impacts to those who can use it in the global climate change arena. The organization achieves this by publishing original research findings (such our projections of sea-level rise or our assessments of the hazards and impacts associated with varying degrees of warming) and by disseminating the most important discoveries from the scientific literature. Future climate change projections are inherently uncertain since they are dependent on a wide variety of events that are themselves unpredictable. While much progress has been made in our ability to comprehend and model the climate system, there are still significant gaps. To this end, we devote a great deal of effort to deciphering both these processes and the probability attached to predicted climatic impacts. https://climateanalytics.org/what-we-do/science-assessment-and-analysis/ temperature ceiling.

2,978 planes flew on April day, aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia tweeted, "The skyrocketing domestic passenger traffic post Covid is a reflection of India's high growth."Since the pandemic, the country's economy has boomed, attracting more tourists. 37.5 million people flew domestically in the first three months of 2023.The Directorate General of Civil Aviation reports a 51.7% rise from last year. Covid halted progress for two years. Aviation expert Mark Martin told the BBC that demand "has been building for some time and it seems to be exploding right now." Mr. Martin says many people have taken their first travel since the outbreak began. The irony about this is that India is one of the countries which is adversely affected by effects of climate change. It would be expected to see the government encouraging people to transition to eco-friendly mobility as a way to remedy effects of climate change. The World Bank is reportedly rethinking its goal, financial model, and leadership. After 78 years, the strong global institution has been under pressure to reform and criticism from its government shareholders, particularly the US and Germany, for failing to address global challenges including debt distress, poverty, and climate change. The Bridgetown Initiative, sponsored by Barbados, is calling for innovative ways to give more finance to address a "unprecedented combination of crises". In December, the World Bank announced an Evolution Roadmap to examine its mission and finances. In February, its president, David Malpass, resigned early in June 2023 after climate denialism allegations. https://africanarguments.org/2023/04/is-the-world-bank-really-going-green/ These changes have prompted optimism that the international financial institution is doing some soul-searching and will soon emerge ready to spearhead climate change action. However, a closer look at the various opaque ways the Bank pumps billions into the fossil fuel industry reveals that the change needed is far deeper and more thorough than what is being discussed.

https://newsroom.safaricom.co.ke/smart-meters-are-helping-to-track-water-on-the-internet-here-is-how/ Water conservation is a hot concern today. Water conservation may save towns and corporations a lot of money and improve the environment. How important is water conservation for the average homeowner? 1. A planet with 71% water would never have a water shortage, but it does. Over 96% of Earth's water is saltwater, rendering it nearly worthless. Only 1% of Earth's water is usable and accessible. Estimates show that population growth is decreasing freshwater supply according to https://dropconnect.com/water-use-statistics/ 2. In water-rich areas, wasted water affects more than water. Water extraction, transportation, and purification require energy. Wastewater needs treatment. They use fossil fuels. Wastewater affects air, fossil fuels, and carbon footprint. 3. Freshwater irrigation produces 40% of global food. Wastewater starves. 4. People are appreciating healthy ecosystems. Healthy ecosystems regulate water and climate. Water use affects ecosystems. Safaricom PLC has launched a smart water meter technology to address the issue of water wastage, the technology is to help households and organizations monitor their usage and avoid wastage. Also, the technology is to help consumers get accurate accurate water readings, this will help reduce disputes from speculations of estimation of water pricing.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has challenged Law lords attending the 3rd Regional Symposium on Greening Judiciaries in Africa to come up with punishable measures in law on environmental destruction. The African Country’s Judiciaries in Africa gathered under the umbrella, of the 3rd General Conference of the Africa Judicial Education Network on Environmental Law (AJENEL) are currently deliberating on strategies that include legislation that can address the climate change matter towards saving the ecosystem. The AJENEL event presided over by President, William Ruto brought together judicial officers across Africa and beyond with the aim of strengthening the role of the Judiciary in addressing climate change in Africa. Speaking during the event, Speaker Wetangula said that climate change is a global matter that requires urgent measures towards saving the ecosystem through strategic legislation geared towards addressing the climate change matter. Wetang’ula said that Kenya had taken a deliberate step to demonstrate its commitment to ensuring a friendly environment. “This dialogue could not have come at a better time than now when the current negative climate change being experienced across the globe has adversely affected our way of life. Everywhere I go in the village, our elder citizens tell a different story of serious environmental degradation which has seen forests disappear & rivers dry up leading to a devastating situation in the country including diminished rain patterns”, said Speaker. Speaker Wetangula underpinned the importance of injecting radical measures in mitigating climate change saying that he was encouraged by the coming together of the Judiciaries of Africa to Think Environment, Think Green towards saving our ecosystem. On legislation, Speaker Wetangula challenged the judicial fraternity to review the current existing environmental legislations to capture the current realities to help ease pressure on the environment for friendly co-existence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etYevUPbD2U

The government has failed to meet any of its goals and a "step change" in policy is required, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate shift (CCC).In order to deal with the consequences of climate change, the government has adaptation strategies, which are evaluated by the CCC. The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) is a non-governmental organization formed by experts to advise the government on the climate problem. The government isn't treating adaptation seriously enough, according to Baroness Brown, chairwoman of the CCC's adaptation sub-committee. This country's recent experience "stands in stark contrast to the government's lack of urgency on climate resilience," she said. England has experienced a spate of severe weather events over the past few years, with climate change presumably playing a role. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-65099546 More than 25,000 wildfires were reported in the UK last year, and temps reached 40 degrees Celsius for the first time on record.

Overconsumption and overdevelopment have led the world down a "dangerous path," the report warns. It has been released just in time for the first big United Nations water summit since 1977.The three-day conference, which starts on Wednesday in New York, will attract thousands of delegates.Water, "humanity's lifeblood," is being depleted due to "unsustainable water use, pollution, and unchecked global warming," according to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Global warming will increase seasonal water shortages in both areas with abundant water and those already strained, according to a study released by UN Water and Unesco, which warns that "scarcity is becoming endemic" due to overconsumption and pollution. Approximately 10% of the world's population "currently lives in areas that are high or critical water stress," according to the report's primary author, Richard Connor. In an interview with the BBC, he said, "In our report, we say that up to 3.5 billion people live in conditions of water stress at least one month a year." Approximately half of the world's population presently experiences severe water scarcity for at least part of the year, as stated in the latest UN climate report released Monday by the IPCC expert panel. Mr. Connor told reporters that there are "increasing uncertainties" about the future of the world's water supply. There will be a global crisis "if we don't address it," he warned,Usha Rao Monari, Associate Administrator of the UNDP, recently told the BBC that better resource management is a priority moving forward. She argued that the world's water supply would suffice if only it were handled better than it has been in recent decades. "I think that technology and innovation will play a very large role in looking at how to manage the water sector and the use of water," said one expert. "I think that we will have to find new governance models, new finance models, and new models of using water and reusing water than ever before." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-65035041 About 6,500 people, including 100 ministers and a dozen heads of state and government, are expected to attend the meeting, which is being co-hosted by the governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands.

This is the first time the ECHR has considered a case involving the effects of climate change on human rights. It comes after six years of fighting in Swiss courts with no results.Heatwaves are becoming more common and temperatures are rising faster than the global norm in Switzerland. The women of Switzerland, who name themselves the Club of Climate Seniors and are, on average, 73 years old, claim that climate change threatens their human rights, health, and even their lives. Their medical records are a key piece of proof in their case. They are asking the ECHR to mandate that Switzerland do more to cut carbon emissions. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65107800 Elisabeth Stern, a climate change activist, told the BBC, "Due to climate change, we have more heatwaves and older women suffer more." During heatwaves, their mortality rates are higher than normal. Why complain, they say; you're going to perish soon enough. But we don't want to be sacrificed because the Swiss government can't formulate a workable climate strategy.

In a two-month sample period this year, BBC Sport identified 81 short-haul domestic flights made by Premier League teams to and from 100 matches. Premier League clubs have been seen flying short distances to matches rather than driving or taking the train. This has been evidenced by Trent Alexander-Arnold's return flight from Newcastle to Liverpool, Ben Chadwell's https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65017565 flight from London to Leicester, and Nottingham Forest's flight from East Midlands Airport to Blackpool. The length of contentious trips, which ranged from 27 minutes to an hour and a half, was disclosed by an analysis of 100 games played in the UK Premier League between January 19 and March 19, 2023. The research provides new information about "positioning" flights, which involve transporting players and staff to matches by flying nearly empty aircraft to convenient airports, sometimes all over the United Kingdom. According to the Research: -Eighty-one domestic visits by Premier League clubs (including return journeys) -Those 81 journeys included 59 Premier League away games, 16 FA Cup away games, and 6 EFL Cup away games. -The lowest journey time was 27 minutes, and the longest was 77. -The typical duration of all 81 journeys was 42 minutes. BBC Sport emailed Premier League teams with travel information. Many "positioning" flights were discovered to have connections in the research. Research Findings: There were 81 player aircraft, and 37 of them had "positioning" marked on them. Flight times for positioning were between 17 and 84 minutes. On average, each of the 37 "positioning" journeys took 42 minutes. Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are produced when gasoline is burned in aircraft. Earth will be warmed by these. Short-haul aircraft are the most polluting per kilometer, as reported by the UK Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. These "positioning flights" get the aircraft ready for its next private charter. Commonly known as "ghost flights," these routes have no passengers on board. BBC Sport attempted to get a passenger tally from the airlines but was unsuccessful. The southernmost Premier League team, Bournemouth, might have more to gain by taking to the air. On March 17–18, they took the 73-minute journey to Birmingham Airport for a match against Aston Villa. This journey took an extra 201 minutes due to the addition of four "positioning flights," three of which went to or from Scotland. BBC Sport discovered aircraft flying from one London airport to another before player travels, in addition to the 37 positioning flights. It could be bigger as a result.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley's "Bridgetown Initiative" uses the IMF's Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to attract private investment into LMIC transition projects at no cost to rich and poor nation taxpayers (see Inside the Institutions, What are SDRs?). Economic heft determines IMF SDRs. (i.e. their IMF quota share; see Observer Winter 2022; Autumn 2022). SDR buyers can borrow from IMF members at 2.7 percent using SDR currencies. "Bridgetown" proposes a $500 billion Global Climate Mitigation Trust to store empty or new SDRs. (see Observer Summer 2022). The Trust lends SDR currencies to LMIC projects for shares. Lending to programs instead of governments distinguishes this IMF trust. These loans would become the Mitigation Trust's asset and the project's liability, effectively taking climate mitigation off LMICs' balance sheets and truly involving the private sector, which is crucial given LMICs' fiscal constraints and high capital costs. Proven technologies, high environmental, social, and governance standards, and expert investment managers would pre-qualify projects based on how much and how fast they reliably lower global warming. https://edition.cnn.com/videos/tv/2023/03/31/amanpour-avinash-persaud-climate-barbados.cnn

Nairobi produces 500 tons of plastic garbage daily. Most of it winds up in landfills or waterways and roadsides nationwide. Nzambi Matee, a 29-year-old materials engineer, experimented with ways to use this garbage to fight the flood. Gjenge Makers, a startup, recycles bags, containers, and other plastic into bricks for patios, pavements, and other construction projects. Gjenge pavers are inexpensive and durable, unlike plastic bricks. They melt at 350°C and are stronger than concrete. Matee and her colleagues tested several plastic-sand combinations and created the technology to process them over three years. Gjenge Makers now produce 1,500 pavers daily. The company lowers prices by directly sourcing raw plastic from factories and recyclers, often for free. Schools and homeowners, especially those in Nairobi's slums, can afford it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0FOc0QUWmw https://www.gjenge.co.ke/

Kisii county, rated number 45 out of 47 counties in Kenya, is the county that is 300 km from the country's capital city, and the entire Gusii region includes Nyamira county. Because there are springs roughly every two kilometers, the locals have never experienced a prolonged dry period. The region's streams, springs, and rivers have traditionally drawn their water supply from the surrounding wetland areas. But if the ongoing destruction of water towers is not stopped, the region, which is witnessing exponential population increase, risks losing its past and present glory. The two largest wetland areas in Kisii County are Etora in the gucha sub county and Nyanturago in the Kisii central sub county. Over 1.2 million people in Kisii county and beyond rely on water from these two wetlands, which have a combined area of over 2000 acres and are fed by roughly 20 springs and streams. Wetlands are critically important, however they are being destroyed and encroached upon by locals, governments, and corporations despite this fact. What's worse is that government entities responsible for protecting the wetlands are pointing fingers at one other instead of working together to find a solution. For example, the major economic activity in the area, crop plantation, thrives on the Nyanturago wetland, where churches have been built and trenches dug to channel out the water. The county administration has been criticized by Mr. Jayson onkoba ebeno, a local chief administrator in the Nyanturago east sub-location. The wetland in this area has been neglected for too long. The marsh, he says, has been encroached upon, and he provides evidence in the form of new buildings like schools and churches. Since the wetland is owned by the county, he says it is their responsibility to ensure its preservation; however, the local community can only do so much to help unless the county government gets on board first. About 30 kilometers west of Nyanturago wetland is Etora wetland, where locals have built homes deep within the wetland because they have nowhere else to build. The main source of income for the county is the production of bricks, while crop planting is also important. The area's assistant chief, Robert Osoro, is certain that the damage done to the wetland cannot be undone. According to Mr. Osoro, a government school has purchased a portion of the marsh and plans are underway to turn it into a playground. The wetland's future is grim because of plans to construct a district officer's office and a police post there. Steak entire Meanwhile, villagers have complained about a Chinese construction enterprise on the outskirts of the Etora wetland dumping its sewage into a river that flows through the wetlands. Their animals that drink from the river have gotten sick as a result. Mr. Peter, the company's business manager, reacted to claims that NEMA, the national environment management authority of Kenya, inspected the facility and suggested a few changes, all of which were implemented. However, it is important to remember that last year, the Kenya national environment complaints committee visited the county to figure out how to stop the further destruction of the wetlands after an outcry from villagers living near the two on wetlands. At the conclusion of the visit, the president issued an order establishing a committee to handle the issues highlighted; the committee was comprised of prominent members of the country, but three months later, no action had been taken to execute the matters raised. The director for Kisii County's National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has disassociated NEMA from the wetlands' mess and declared the committee it formed to be illegal because it is not chaired by the county governor. https://soundcloud.com/steve-mokaya/major-wetlands-in-kenyas-kisii?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

The county government of Kisii should take this seriously

Gazettement of wetlands would ensure that they are protected accordingly but failure to that such activities would continue to erode these important water bodies which play a vital role in carbon sequestration thus helping curb climate change

In August 2017, Kenya implemented one of the strongest bans in the world on the manufacture, distribution, and use of plastic carrier bags. A fine of Ksh4 million ($40,000) or imprisonment for up to four years is possible .Seven merchants at Ololulunga Market were arrested by NEMA for selling items in forbidden plastic bags. The businessmen will have to face the judge. NEMA has issued a call to all markets around the country to stop selling plastic bags that are illegal to distribute. Violators could face a fine of at least $2 million or six months in prison. Read more: https://twitter.com/NemaKenya/status/1615326376592277504
