The City of Austin has called for a global phase-out of fossil fuels and a just transition to renewable energy. Citing the health and safety risks of fossil fuel expansion, the Texas capital formally endorsed the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty proposal, becoming the first capital of a major oil-producing region to urge world leaders to negotiate a framework to manage a just transition away from fossil fuels. The largest oil-producing state in the United States, Texas has the most crude oil refineries and accounts for roughly 42 percent of the nation’s crude oil production. How does climate change impact women and girls? The climate crisis is not “gender neutral”. Women and girls experience the greatest impacts of climate change, which amplifies existing gender inequalities and poses unique threats to their livelihoods, health, and safety. Across the world, women depend more on, yet have less access to, natural resources. In many regions, women bear a disproportionate responsibility for securing food, water, and fuel. Agriculture is the most important employment sector for women in low- and lower-middle income countries, during periods of drought and erratic rainfall, women, as agricultural workers and primary procurers, work harder to secure income and resources for their families. This puts added pressure on girls, who often have to leave school to help their mothers manage the increased burden. Image Nurun Nahar has two children and lives lives in a remote part of Islampur, Jamalpur. When floods destroyed her house in Bangladesh in 2019, she had to move to a shelter. Photo: UN Women/Mohammad Rakibul Hasan. Climate change is a “threat multiplier”, meaning it escalates social, political and economic tensions in fragile and conflict-affected settings. As climate change drives conflict across the world, women and girls face increased vulnerabilities to all forms of gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence, human trafficking, child marriage, and other forms of violence. When disasters strike, women are less likely to survive and more likely to be injured due to long standing gender inequalities that have created disparities in information, mobility, decision-making, and access to resources and training. In the aftermath, women and girls are less able to access relief and assistance, further threatening their livelihoods, wellbeing and recovery, and creating a vicious cycle of vulnerability to future disasters. Women’s and girls’ health is endangered by climate change and disasters by limiting access to services and health care, as well as increasing risks related to maternal and child health. Research indicates that extreme heat increases incidence of stillbirth, and climate change is increasing the spread of vector-borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus, which are linked to worse maternal and neonatal outcomes.

President Joe Biden announced that the U.S. would resume its contributions to the UN’s flagship climate fund following a six-year hiatus with a new allocation of $1 billion to support climate-vulnerable developing countries. Despite contributing the least to the climate emergency, developing countries are among the most vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. As warming intensifies, developing countries are disproportionately bearing the burden of climate disruption and have fewer resources to recover from rapidly intensifying climate-induced disasters such as heat waves, floods, and droughts. “As large economies and large emitters, we must step up and support [developing] economies. So today, I’m pleased to announce the United States is going to provide $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund, a fund that is critical in ways to help developing nations that they can’t do now,” stated President Biden. The most populous state in the U.S. is cracking down on the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles. California has passed a law banning the sale of all gas cars by 2035, a pivotal step in the state’s battle against the climate emergency. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has voted unanimously to move forward with a historic plan to phase out the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles over the next 13 years. State regulators set interim targets requiring 35 percent of new passenger vehicles sold to be powered by electricity or hydrogen by 2026 and 68 percent by 2030. The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the state, accounting for more than half of the state’s carbon pollution. Leopards have been introduced into Zinave National Park in an effort to rewild the region. Donated from Karangani Game Reserve, the reintroduction of the big cats is part of a broader rehabilitation and rewilding initiative led by Peace Parks Foundation and Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas. “With the exciting reintroduction of the emblematic leopard, Peace Parks and its partners continue to achieve our goal of restoring the ecological sanctity of Zinave, through the success of our rewilding programme,” said Werner Myburgh, Peace Parks CEO. “As we witness these apex predators roaming the park, we are again reminded that biodiversity enhancement, through the restoration and preservation of wilderness areas, is the most effective tool we have in fighting climate change and securing a sustainable future for mankind.” For the full story, visit The Planetary Press: https://www.theplanetarypress.com/2022/01/rewilding-mozambique-leopards-return-to-zinave/ Photo credit: Peace Parks Foundation

Menus at COP will be affordable and with a strong focus on sustainability Eighty percent of food to be served at conference will be seasonal and sourced fr om Scotland Sustainable measures at the heart of approach COP26 delegates will be served sustainable, locally-sourced food at the upcoming climate summit in Glasgow, the UK confirmed today. Overall, 95 percent of the food will be from the UK, largely sourced from Scotland, and be seasonal. This will put sustainability at the heart of catering for the summit, reducing emissions and promoting environment-friendly food production. COP26 will set an example for other large-scale international events, in terms of food sourcing, by taking a number of measures to ensure a sustainable approach: Ingredients will be replicated across the conference’s menus to ensure produce can be repurposed for other meals, if necessary, to avoid food waste. The cups used to serve drinks will be reusable and it is estimated that this approach will save up to 250,000 single use cups. Suppliers are setting high standards for sustainable food production, from Edinburgh’s Mara Seaweed, which is abundant and entirely sustainable and does not require fertilizer, fresh water or soil to grow, through to Benzies carrots and potatoes who use wind turbines to power their cool storage, biomas to provide heating and actively recycle the water they use. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/cop26-sources-80-of-food-from-scotland-for-its-sustainable-menus

More than 2,000 scientists, researchers, and academics delivered a letter demanding national governments to develop, adopt, and implement a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty in an effort to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of current and future generations. “Any ‘net zero’ policy that allows for the continued expansion of these weapons of mass destruction is insufficient. Just as governments came together to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals, or end the proliferation of nuclear weapons, they must now urgently negotiate a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty," said Rebecca Byrnes, Deputy Director of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. https://youtu.be/E3Qs4MlxDHw Our planet faces a myriad of catastrophic environmental challenges- climate change, widespread biodiversity loss, overexploitation of resources, air pollution, sea-level rise, extreme weather, desertification. The science is clear- the state of our global environment is deteriorating at an unprecedented rate. In one of the few times in history, the prospects of future generations are far worse than they were for previous ones. Young people are in the streets and in courts to protest the stealing of their hopes, dreams, and futures. Now more than ever, we need fundamental transformative changes across our legal, economic, social, political, and technological spheres. Rising to the challenges facing our global community can only happen by reaching an ambitious international agreement that recognizes the most vital common denominator – the system that supports life on Earth, of which we are all a part, that connects us all, and upon which we all depend. It has been nearly 50 years since the historic 1972 Stockholm Conference. Now, a global coalition is calling upon UNEP and all Member States to drive a paradigm shift that recognizes the common ground upon which we can build a safe and sustainable future for human civilization. The Civil Society 2022 Declaration could be the needed starting point for that paradigm shift. In Common Home Conversations Pathway to 2022, you will hear high-level political and public figures, academics, and influential activists discuss what should be the content of this crucial declaration. Common Home Conversations is the place to discuss the challenges posed by climate change and possible solutions and ensure that the Civil Society 2022 Declaration can be a true gamechanger to help create a stabilized Earth. Join us to be part of this important global conversation.
