Signify, the world leader in lighting, advocates a fast transition to energy-efficient connected LED lighting1 to accelerate decarbonization and advance digitalization for businesses and consumers. World and business leaders should focus on making changes that deliver results quickly and impact both the professional and consumer lighting markets. More than a decade after Signify’s call to phase out the incandescent light bulb around the globe, it now calls for the transition to energy-efficient connected LED lighting as the new standard of ‘general lighting’2. The move will contribute to meeting the goals of economic recovery plans around the world, including the European Green Deal and American Jobs Plan, and the commitments nations made in the Paris Agreement. Tech giant Microsoft announced today the launch of a new sustainable data center region in Sweden, enabling businesses to host their cloud workloads in Microsoft’s Swedish datacenters powered by 100% carbon-free energy. The region includes 3 data centers, located in Gävle, Sandviken, and Staffanstorp. Microsoft state that its new data center region in Sweden is committed to cutting carbon emissions, achieving zero waste certification, and running on 100% carbon-free energy, through a 24/7 energy matching partnership with electricity provider Vattenfall. Microsoft and Vattenfall announced the collaboration last year, after piloting a 24/7 solution, designed to match the production and consumption of renewable energy over short time increments, enabling more complete use of renewables by companies, and providing better transparency regarding energy use and climate impact. Microsoft also announced that it has signed agreements for new renewable energy projects with several companies including bp, Enlight Renewable Energy, European Energy, NTR, Prime Capital, and wpd. https://www.esgtoday.com/microsoft-launches-100-carbon-free-energy-powered-datacenter-region-in-sweden/

With the critical COP26 conference just around the corner, investors are seeking new levels of transparency into the alignment of listed companies with global climate goals. MSCI, a leading provider of critical decision support tools and services for the global investment community announced today it had made the Implied Temperature Rise of over 2,900 companies (constituents of MSCI ACWI Index) publicly available on its website to allow investors access to the data and transparency required to navigate their transition to net-zero. Implied Temperature Rise provides clarity and transparency on the climate commitments of listed companies by assessing their commitments to net-zero emissions using a simplified and powerful forward-looking metric: companies’ alignment with global temperature targets, which is expressed in degrees Celsius. MSCI first announced the launch of this solution in September. The Temperature Rise solution was modeled to meet the design recommendations set out by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Portfolio Alignment Team for all segments of the financial sector to measure and disclose temperature alignment of portfolios as well as target-setting frameworks. According to European Bedding Industry Association, up to 30 million mattresses annually reach their end of life, and it is estimated that 60% end up in landfills and 40% are incinerated. However, it is reported that almost 85% of their mass can be recycled through proper disassembly. A Dutch company called Auping has introduced the World´s first fully circular mattress together with DSM-Niaga to resolve this issue. The mattress is equipped with a "Circularity Passport."By scanning the Niaga® label on the side of the mattress with a smartphone, you can see exactly what the mattress is made of and how it is recycled. Also, they are the first sleep brand with a take-back system for the careful processing of used mattresses. They are working towards their ambition to make circularity the starting point for all their products and processes. They make mattresses of which all parts can be reused in new mattresses. They aim to be fully circular by 2030. You can read more about them here: https://www.auping.com/en/circular https://www.auping.com/en/give-your-mattress-second-life

Children set for more climate disasters than their grandparents, research shows People born today will suffer many times more extreme heatwaves and other climate disasters over their lifetimes than their grandparents, research has shown. The study is the first to assess the contrasting experience of climate extremes by different age groups and starkly highlights the intergenerational injustice posed by the climate crisis. The analysis showed that a child born in 2020 will endure an average of 30 extreme heatwaves in their lifetime, even if countries fulfill their current pledges to cut future carbon emissions. That is seven times more heatwaves than someone born in 1960. Today’s babies will also grow up to experience twice as many droughts and wildfires and three times more river floods and crop failures than someone who is 60 years old today. However, rapidly cutting global emissions to keep global heating to 1.5C would almost halve the heatwaves today’s children will experience while keeping under 2C would reduce the number by a quarter. A vital task of the UN’s Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow in November is to deliver pledges of bigger emissions cuts from the most polluting countries and climate justice will be an important element of the negotiations. Developing countries, and the youth strike protesters who have taken to the streets around the world, point out that those who did least to cause the climate crisis are suffering the most. SBTi Says 80% of Company Climate Commitments are not Science-Based The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), one of the key organizations focused on aligning corporate environmental sustainability action with the global goals of limiting climate change, announced the results of a research study indicating that while companies are increasingly setting climate targets, the vast majority fail to align with climate science. The research, outlined in the newly published report, “Taking the Temperature: Assessing and scaling-up climate ambition in the G20 business sector,” found that of the more than 4,200 companies in the G20 that have set climate targets, only 20% are science-based. Results were slightly better in G7 countries, where 25% of targets were science-based, with only 6% of G13 (G20 countries outside of the G7) reaching this benchmark. The report found that several G20 countries did not have any companies with science-based targets, including Argentina, Indonesia, South Korea, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. The UK was the best-performing country based on this metric, at 41%, followed by France at 33%. Encouragingly, the report indicated a 27% increase in uptake of science-based targets in G20 companies between June-August 2021. https://www.esgtoday.com/sbti-says-80-of-company-climate-commitments-are-not-science-based/

Food and Agriculture Benchmark measures and ranks 350 of the world’s most influential food and agriculture companies on their contributions to transforming our global food system. The benchmark builds upon existing frameworks and targets to holistically assess companies from farm to fork on their environmental, nutritional, and social impact. The benchmark is launching alongside the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit, a critical moment for addressing the interconnectedness of food systems and global challenges such as hunger, climate change, poverty, and inequality. Whilst pressure on the food sector is mounting, many major companies continue to operate business as usual and not contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their key findings reveal worrying gaps in the industry’s preparedness for climate change, progress on human rights, and contribution to nutritious diets. The benchmarked companies account for more than half of the world’s food and agriculture revenue and directly employ over 23 million people. If these companies do not take action now, the SDGs and the Paris Agreement will be further out of sight than ever before. You can read more here: https://www.worldbenchmarkingalliance.org/publication/food-agriculture/findings/food-companies-need-to-step-up-for-sdg-decade-of-action/

Logitech has announced that it is adopting a climate-positive approach, addressing its carbon footprint across the entire value chain (Scope 1, 2, and 3) to achieve carbon neutrality this year and setting the company on a path to net-zero by 2030, and beyond that, climate positive. The world needs faster climate action to combat climate change and its impacts. Therefore, Logitech is accelerating its previous commitments in support of the Paris Agreement and RE100 and is committing to remove more carbon than the company creates, shifting to renewable energy sources and investing in restoration programs. SSAB had partnered with Daimler's Mercedes-Benz to introduce fossil fuel-free steel into vehicle production, with prototype parts for body shells planned for next year. SSAB plans to supply the market with fossil-free steel at a commercial scale in 2026, using the HYBRIT system to replace coking coal, traditionally needed for iron ore-based steelmaking, with electricity and hydrogen. In the Netherlands, officials ruled that Shell has to halt ads claiming customers can make their fuel purchases "carbon neutral" by paying for carbon offsets. Shell offers drivers in the Netherlands, and other countries, the option of paying extra per litre to the price of petrol. Shell uses the money mainly to buy carbon offsets from two REDD projects (Katingan Mentaya in Indonesia and Cordillera Azul in Peru). Shell had two weeks to appeal the decision, which was not legally binding, after which the committee was to publish a final ruling. In response, last year, Shell has amended its website to read "Make the difference. Offset CO2 emissions" from "Make a difference, Drive CO2 neutral." The Climate Crisis is a Child Rights Crisis: Introducing the Children’s Climate Risk Index is the first comprehensive analysis of climate risk from a child’s perspective. It ranks countries based on children’s exposure to climate and environmental shocks, such as cyclones and heatwaves, as well as their vulnerability to those shocks, based on their access to essential services. Launched in collaboration with Fridays for Future on the third anniversary of the youth-led global climate strike movement, the report finds approximately 1 billion children – nearly half the world's 2.2 billion children – live in one of the 33 countries classified as “extremely high-risk”. These children face a deadly combination of exposure to multiple climates and environmental shocks with a high vulnerability due to inadequate essential services, such as water and sanitation, healthcare, and education. The findings reflect the number of children impacted today – figures likely to get worse as the impacts of climate change accelerate. In Stockholm the Swedish government gives green light to a new motorway build despite the fact that state authority Naturvårdsverket among others have pointed towards swedish climate law (Klimatlagen). The climate law states that political decisions need to take the climate into account. Deciding for this motorway to be built shows how the government ignores Klimatlagen in the decision-making. The Swedish government and Transport Administration should adapt the infrastructure policy to the existing climate goals and the latest report from the UN Climate Panel. A court in the Hague has ordered Shell to cut its global carbon emissions by 45% by the end of 2030 compared with 2019 levels, whereas Shell has set its long-term carbon emissions targets of 20% by 2030, 45% by 2035, and 100% by 2050 (compared to 2016). Shell plans to appeal against the court’s ruling to cut its carbon emissions by 45% over the next decade. Shell plans to reduce the average carbon intensity of the energy it produces by 20% by 2030, well short of the court’s ruling. But Van Beurden said asking “one company” to reduce emissions by 45% when oil industry rivals and EU states plan to achieve only half these reductions over the same period is “not only unreasonable but doubly ineffective.” Read more here about Shell´s energy transition strategy https://www.shell.com/media/news-and-media-releases/2021/shell-presents-energy-transition-strategy-publication-to-shareholders-for-advisory-vote.html https://www.shell.com/promos/energy-and-innovation/shell-energy-transition-strategy/_jcr_content.stream/1618407326759/7c3d5b317351891d2383b3e9f1e511997e516639/shell-energy-transition-strategy-2021.pdf https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jul/29/shell-raises-dividend-soaring-oil-prices

In The Guardian today, their Today in Focus podcast covers the Australian government's attempts to lobby to prevent UNESCO from putting the Great Barrier Reef, a natural wonder of the world and visible from space, on their endangered list because of successive years of bleaching. Since the government can't argue against climate science they are reduced to arguing on a procedural basis but they have succeeded in putting off a decision for about six months. Tell Mr Morrison he's not only on the wrong side of history, but he's also actively putting Australia's population in harm's way with his actions. https://is.gd/LTKWRu
