Energy generated by fossil fuels in the EU hit a record low in the first half of 2023.The 27 member states burned 17% less fossil fuels for electricity than during the same period in 2022. The decline in fossil fuels is a sign of the times.Coal and gas are too expensive, too risky and the EU is cutting them out. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/08/31/a-sign-of-the-times-eu-reliance-on-fossil-fuels-falls-to-record-low-report-reveals

The Polish government claim that the three EU climate policies threaten the energy security and fail to protect the wellbeing of citizens. The legal actions were put in place by Poland's climate minister Anna Moskwa in June. The first claim was that the EU ban on the sale of new CO2-emitting cars which may give rise to serious negative consequences to the European automotive industry among others. Secondly, the annual targets for greenhouse gas emissions set by the EU for Poland threaten the country's energy security. Finally, the EU's market stability reserve which aims to address the surplus of emission allowances in the EU emission trading system could cut mining jobs leading to greater social inequality between member states and increased social exclusion. https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2023/08/28/poland-asks-eu-court-of-justice-to-cancel-three-eu-climate-policies

Local residents of the Spanish city of Valencia say the city is 'unliveable' due to the extreme heat which has made living conditions miserable in the Mediterranean coastal city. The city broke a heat record on 10th August 2023 when it hit 46.8°C. Eight areas around the cities of Valencia and Murcia are on red alert meaning extreme risk due to heat. The increase in heatwaves as well as their increasing duration and intensity is due to climate change.According to the European Forest Fire Information System, more than 1,300 ha have burned in less than a week in Spain.Nearly 71,000 ha have been burned since the start of the year. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/08/11/valencia-sets-new-heat-record-during-third-spanish-heatwave-of-the-summer

Greenhouse emissions rate has dropped by 33% in 14 years in India, putting it on track to reach UN goal. This drop is faster than expected and is due to the rise in renewable energy generation and forest cover. India's average rate of reduction in emissions increased to 3% annually in the period 2016-2019 from just 1.5% in the period 2014-2016.This was largely attributable to the government's push towards renewables. Besides the use of renewables, there has been a substantial increase in forest cover and schemes as from 2019,covering 24.56% of India hence promoting non-fossil generation and targeting emissions in industrial, automotive and energy sectors leading to the sharp reduction intensity. Recently,India has been trying to promote green hydrogen manufactured by splitting water molecules using renewable energy. I believe the progress made on reducing emissions intensity should help India avert pressure to developed nations to stop using coal. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/08/10/india-slashes-emissions-rate-by-one-third-in-14-years-putting-it-on-track-to-reach-un-goal

Shenango Coke Works facility in Pittsburgh closed in January 2016 after incurring millions of dollars in government fines for air and water pollution. In addition to the government regulations upon the company, combined efforts of community pressure helped its long reign to an end and locals were therefore rewarded with health gains. According to the analysis of state health records, average weekly visits to the local emergency departments for heart-related problems decreased by 42% immediately after the closure of the company. "Our research provides compelling scientific evidence that the closure of this coal processing coke plant significantly eliminated fossil fuel-related air pollution emissions that improved the air quality and cardiovascular health of nearby residents," lead investigator Wuyue Yu said. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/08/04/coal-plant-closure-led-to-rapid-drop-in-heart-attacks-and-strokes-in-this-city-new-study-f

July was on the track to be the hottest month on earth as deadly heat waves and wildfires across southern Europe have made painfully clear how little time remains to avert climate disaster. Portugal's efforts were however recognized as it has brought forward some crucial decarbonization targets as follows; 1)It has raised its renewable goals. The country is powering ahead on certain energy fronts for instance, solar and wind produced over 50% of the country's electricity for the first time earlier this year. 2)The country is helping citizens to decarbonise. One of the easiest ways it has considered to help people cut their carbon emissions is reducing the cost of public transport.Portugal will soon launch a new National Rail Pass enabling people to take as many regional train journeys as they like for just €49 a month. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/07/31/solar-49-train-tickets-and-home-energy-efficiency-why-portugal-is-our-green-country-of-the

As a result of increase in temperature, which most of the European nations have and are recently experiencing has led to the wild fire epidemic in some of the European nations.Spain has however realized an ancient breed of horse and European bison as being part of a pioneering project to combat the risk of wildfires. These endangered animals play a crucial role in clearing scrubland and vegetation that serve as fuel for devastating blazes. This innovative approach aims to prevent wildfires by utilising the horses' natural grazing behaviour to consume 30 kilograms of vegetation daily. The director of the European Bison Reserve,Jesùs González Ruiz, emphasizes the critical role of European bison in maintaining forest health.Their presence helps prevent the undergrowth from becoming a potential fire hazard. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/07/22/spain-and-portugal-recruit-bison-and-rare-horses-to-help-reduce-risk-of-blazes

Utrecht is the latest city to get the green treatment from celebrated architect Stefano Boeri, the 66-year old Italian architect who amused the world with his first vertical forest in Milan a decade ago. The Wonderwoods vertical forest is taking root in the Utrecht neighbourhood between Croeselaan and Jaarbeursboulevard and will be ready for residents by summer 2024. With 300 trees of 30 different species on its facade and thousands of plants the tower will hold the same vegetation as one hectare of forest. This urban ecosystem is capable of producing around 41 tonnes of oxygen every year while sucking in CO2 and capturing fine dust particles. In summer, the shade of its foliage reduces the heat island effect, lowering the temperature on the facades and inside the building. This has a significant impact on the local microclimate and the wellbeing of residents, especially as the risk of heatwaves increases due to climate change. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/05/25/utrechts-new-vertical-forest-will-be-home-to-10000-plants-and-trees-how-will-residents-ben

China recorded a record-breaking temperature of 52.2°C on Sunday 16 July. The searing heat hit the remote northwest township of Sanbao in Xinjiang's Turpan Depression as reported by state-run newspaper Xinjiang. The previous high temperature of 50.3°C was recorded in 2015 in Ayding, also in Turpan a vast basin of sand dunes and dried up lakes more than 150 metres below sea level.Record hear is expected to persist in the region for at least another five days. Prolonged bouts of high temperature in China have challenged power grids and crops, and concerns are mounting of a possible repeat of last year's drought, the most severe in 60 years. The EU is pushing for a global pledge to phase out the unabated use of fossil fuels "well ahead of 2050" at COP28 according to climate chief Frans Timmermans. He said he hopes to get countries to sign up for three interlinked parts of this pledge. The first is that the annual deployment of new renewable energy needs to triple between now and 2030.Secondly,he said that the world must double the rate at which energy efficiency is improving compared to the last decade. The final pledge calls for the world to "phase out unabated fossil fuels ahead of 2050." This would mean eliminating emissions from the oil and gas sector and products sold by oil and gas companies. It will also require an end to the use of coal. "I know these are ambitious proposals but they are necessary," he added."They can provide a strong signal on climate action to decision makers, investors and civil society." https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/07/13/eu-to-push-for-fossil-fuel-phaseout-well-ahead-of-2050-at-cop28-climate-summit

Huge phosphate deposits discovered in Scandinavia could be large enough to supply electric vehicles, solar panels and fertilisers for up to 100 years. The valuable ore was discovered in 2018 by Norge Mining who revealed that they had found 70 billion tonnes of the material. Phosphate is rich in phosphorus which is a key component of many green technologies,as well as fertiliser.Once mined,it can be processed into phosphoric acid and supply a broad range of uses. "We believe the phosphorus that we can produce will be important to the West-it provides autonomy," founder and deputy CEO of Norge Mining,Michael Wurmser told news website Euractiv. However, the refining of phosphorus has historically been very carbon intensive but Norge Mining plans to use carbon capture and storage to offset the environmental impact of production. https://www.euronews.com/green

Despite greenhouse gas emissions have declined, experts say efforts are still insufficient to reach 2030 targets. The country's High Council for Climate(HCC) has warned that France's action on greenhouse gas emissions is insufficient and the country is not ready to succumb the consequences. The 200-page report released on Wednesday 28 June reveals that the country was overwhelmed by extreme climate related events in 2022 which required emergency measures on an exceptional scale but extreme years of this kind are becoming increasingly common,it says. According to the report, while a framework for action on climate change is being developed,it has not so far included economic policy capable of triggering the acceleration needed to reach climate targets. "The decline in greenhouse gas emissions in France continues but at a rate that remains insufficient to achieve 2030 objectives," the High Council for Climate says. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/06/29/france-unprepared-for-serious-impacts-of-climate-change-as-warming-hits-29c-report warns.

The UK's biggest funeral care provider will offer water cremation also known as resomation services later this year following rising demand for more environmentally friendly end of life options. It's the method that South African anti-apartheid hero,Desmond Tutu chose following his death in 2021. Water cremation uses water to bring the body back to skeletal remains. The body is placed in a steel vessel filled with water and an alkaline solution. It is then heated up taking the flesh to its chemical components. After about three to four hours, only the bones remain which are then ground down to white powder, placed in an urn and given to the family. "For decades there have been just two main choices when it comes to end of life arrangements, burial and cremation," Julian Atkinson, director of resomation company stated."We will be providing people with another option for how they leave this world because this natural process uses water but not fire, making it gentler on the body and kinder on environment." https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/07/04/what-is-water-cremation-uk-to-offer-eco-friendly-burial-alternative-for-the-first-time

Next year's games is likely to promote sustainability and raising awareness about recycling in creative ways.Spectators at the Paris 2024 olympic games will sit on chairs made of plastic recycled from local bins.Marius Hamelot,co-founder of Le Pave',the eco-construction firm behind the initiative said that there were shortages of virgin materials which led a lot of manufacturers to switch to waste. Despite the logistical challenges and strains on global supply chains, the seating scheme is part of wider efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of the olympic games, which promise to be the greenest yet. The organisers have said they will slash emissions in half compared to previous games by utilising existing structures, encouraging public transport use and controversially-carbon offsetting. This approach reduces energy consumption and avoids the production of new waste, embracing the circular economy.Approximately 11,000 seats will be made from recycled materials. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/06/22/paris-olympics-to-give-waste-a-second-life-with-recycled-plastic-chairs.

Environmental law organisation ClientEarth announced that it was taking Shell to court. This may however not sound out of the ordinary but what makes this case different is that there are real people at the centre of it.This time it is not the corporation that is liable,it is their board of directors. ClientEarth says that the members of the board have breached their legal duties by failing to adopt a transition strategy that aligns with the Paris agreement.Essentially, the board is not doing enough to manage the risks the company faces due to climate change. "What we are asking the court for is an order which requires the board to adopt and implement a strategy to manage climate risks in line with its duties under the (UK) Companies act,in line with its duties under English law," ClientEarth senior lawyer Paul Benson explained. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/03/07/behind-the-scenes-with-the-environmental-lawyers-who-are-taking-shells-board-of-directors-

In Japan and many other parts of the world, there has been abnormal weather events like droughts and flooding.Hit by the effects of global warming,Japan has accelerated climate action in recent years committing to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 46% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. The country's media outlets are now rallying behind the "Promise of 1.5°C-Act now to stop global warming" campaign, calling for behavioral changes by individuals and organizations to stave off the doomsday scenario. The "Promise of 1.5°C" is an initiative born out of a commitment by member organizations of the SDG Media Compact-a global network of media companies that signed on to an agreement with the UN to promote the SDGs. Its target is to promote the understanding of the need to limit the global average temperature rise to 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level, propose concrete actions to stop climate change and encourage individuals and organizations to change their behaviours. "The science tells us,people's lives and livelihoods are at stake," said Melissa Fleming, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications."The climate crisis threatens all of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).Our lifestyles have a profound impact on our planet and all of us can be part of solution." The campaign title "Promise of 1.5°C" symbolizes the determination that all individuals and organizations support and act to keep the promises of the parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC). The slogan,"Act now to stop global warming"is a message to urge concrete actions to keep the 1.5°C goal alive. https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/blog/2022/09/media-unite-behind-promise-of-1-5c-climate-campaign-in-disaster-prone-japan/

Globally,Japan is among the top ten countries that contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere as it is a highly industrialised country, affecting climate change negatively. From the synthesis report on observations, projections and impact assessments of climate change, some of the observation data and future projections of climate change were made as follows; 1)The temperature over Japan is rising faster than the global average-Annual mean surface temperature over Japan as with global annual mean has increased with some fluctuations at a rate of 1.19°C/100 years.Projections with the four RCP scenarios indicate that annual mean temperature at the end of 21st century will rise throughout Japan. 2)The number of days with a maximum temperature of 30°C/35°C or above is increasing-Annual number of days with maximum temperatures of 30°C or above known as "manatsu-bi" in Japanese and 35°C or above known as "mosho-bi" in Japanese has increased from the period of 1931 to 2016. 3)While heavy rainfall events are increasing, the number of days with precipitation is decreasing-The number of days with heavy rains(100mm/day)has increased.Additionally, the number of occurences of events with extreme precipitation,50mm/hour according to Automated Meteorological Data Acquisition System(AMeDAS)is also increasing. 4)While snow depth decreases in many areas, heavy snowfall may increase in inland areas-Annual maximum snow depth has decreased for the period between 1962 and 2016 on the sea of Japan side of eastern Japan and on the sea of Japan side of Western Japan at rates of 12.3% and 14.6% per decade respectively. On the other hand, heavy snow fall occuring at a frequency of every ten years is projected to occur more frequently in the inland areas of Honshu island and Hokkaido island. https://www.env.go.jp/content/900449807.pdf

Ways that can be used to address climate change around the world. Climate crisis is affecting everyone but the most vulnerable are children and those living in poverty affected communities making them to account to consequences brought by the impacts besides being least responsible for it.We ought to believe that every child has the right to both a healthy and safe environment today and a sustainable future. These ways are briefly discussed as follows; First, restoration of natural environment is recommendable. For instance, operations that partake this action include Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration(FMNR),a community led nature based solution that reverses environmental degradation and tackles poverty, hunger and climate change through the regeneration of trees and shrubs and the Humbo forestry project,a community managed reforestation initiative in southwest of Ethiopia has regenerated 2,728 hectares of degraded land. Secondly, reducing climate risks and responding to natural disasters may create a great impact. We could partner with vulnerable children, families and communities to reduce their exposure to climate risks through a community led approach to Disaster Risk Management. Building climate-smart livelihoods and green jobs may be considered to least impact on the solution to climate change but it is not so.The World Vision is supporting a Green Recovery from COVID-19 because we cannot mitigate future crises without addressing climate change and taking actions to eradicate poverty and inequality. In addition to that, supporting children's participation should also be considered vital when it comes to addressing climate change. We have to believe that creating spaces for children's activism will have a transformative impacts on their lives and also posses power to change society for the better. Besides that,we should also advocate for greater climate action. This can be done by continuing to work with our cohorts at the local, national and global levels to scale up ecosystem restoration and mitigate climate change. Finally,we have to reduce our own environmental impact by reducing environmental and carbon footprint by incorporating environmentally sound practices and policies. https://www.wvi.org/opinion/view/six-ways-we-are-addressing-climate-change-around-world

Climate change is a global crisis which disproportionately impacts people living in poverty and who are marginalized.USAID's 2022-2030 climate strategy guides our whole of agency approach to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, help partner countries build resilience to climate change and improve our operations.USAID has developed six ambitious targets for achievement by 2030; 1)Mitigation-It will partner with countries to support activities that reduce 6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. 2)Natural and managed ecosystem-It desires to support the conservation, restoration or management of 100 million hectares with a climate mitigation benefit. 3)Adaptation-It seeks to enable the improved climate resilience of 500 million people. 4)Finance-It targets to mobilize $150 billion in public and private finance for climate. 5)Country support-It wishes to align its development portfolios with countries' climate change mitigation and adaptation commitments in at least 80 countries by 2024 and will support its partners to achieve systematic changes towards meeting those commitments in at least 40 countries. 6)Critical populations-It seeks to support its partners to achieve systematic changes that increase meaningful participation and active leadership in climate action of indigenous people, local communities, women, youth and other marginalized and underrepresented groups in at least 40 partner countries. https://www.usaid.gov/policy/climate-strategy

The aim of the discussion paper is to discuss three key questions: 1)What transitions are required to achieve climate neutrality in the context of the MAP? 2)How can policy interventions facilitate these transitions, considering the solutions needed at local and national levels and the related implications for the wider policy framework? 3)What are the research needs and gaps? This discussion paper provides a synthesis of international and EU policy aims and mechanisms as they relate to rural areas. It summarises findings from research on transitions, impacts and approaches to adaptation to achieve a climate neutral continent by 2050. The paper presents interventions supporting mitigation and adaptation to climate change enhancing associated environmental services of thematics which include:rural areas, land use and water, social innovation and partnerships, food and diet, business and finance and open science. Research findings have identified opportunities for instance new types of business, products, careers and roles of environmental features. They also found consequences of climate change in the environmental assets and the ecosystem services they deliver. https://rural-interfaces.eu/news-or-events/discussion-paper-climate-change/
