I talk about “Sustainable Innovation.” Here is one example on what we have to deal with if we don’t have circular and future proofing plans. California went big on rooftop solar. Now that’s a problem for landfills. https://www-latimes-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.latimes.com/business/story/2022-07-14/california-rooftop-solar-pv-panels-recycling-danger?_amp=true #innovation #sustainability #solarpanels #landfills #pollution #emissions

Heard this can be a problem with wind farms and disposal of turbines as well - circularity is something that must be considered!

There should be plans to repair and reuse this panel... They should implement circular economy in this case
•

Circularity is a must in this respect. And solutions already exist. California should build a recycling plant simular to this one in France. https://www.pv-magazine.com/2020/02/04/more-than-5000-tons-of-modules-collected-for-recycling-in-france/

Massachusetts' high court on Tuesday unanimously rejected Exxon Mobil Corp's (XOM.N) bid to dismiss a lawsuit by the state's attorney general accusing the oil company of misleading consumers and investors about climate change and the dangers of using fossil fuels. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court said Attorney General Maura Healey could pursue what Exxon called a politically-motivated case that it claimed violated a state law protecting defendants from lawsuits designed to silence them. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exxon-must-face-massachusetts-climate-change-lawsuit-court-rules-2022-05-24/

Do you agree with Ericsson's ideas on leveraging technologies like 5G, VR and AR would eventually reduce carbon footprint?
•
129 w
Digitization allows optimizing for energy efficiency e.g. the most efficient route for delivering packages or the right amount of water for optimal crop growth. With 5G apps can send a lot more data to energy-hungry data centers to collect and analyze. Only a few of those apps results in energy savings for the user. But in many cases, this data could also have been cached and off-loaded over local wifi as soon as a wifi connection is found again (or analyzed locally). Where machine learning really starts needing 5G is when expensive algorithms need to be run on e.g. HD video from smart glasses (which don't have space for a state-of-the-art GPU in it's frame). I'm not yet aware of any significant climate solutions requiring smart glasses or smart watches, etc. We could also reduce our carbon footprint by getting rid of our commute to work and working from home. VR and AR can help connect to others from home in a more energy-hungry manner than a (video) call. Digitization, machine learning and faster connections can accelerate many things going on in the world, the good and the bad, problem solving and paranoia. One thing is for certain: 5G, VR and AR will increase the need for energy - how much it will help to reduce any carbon footprint is still anyone's guess. In principle 5G could become more energy efficient. It's estimated that 3% of the global energy demand is due to wireless communication, so that's could be significant... Unfortunately the 5G we have today is even less efficient. In some cases where 5G is running over 4G hardware the efficiency even drops from the 20% it was with 4G to 1% with 5G. https://www.tudelft.nl/en/stories/articles/how-not-to-waste-energy-on-5g Disclosure: (data-hungry) machine learning is part of my work.

Suraksha is working on the rejuvenation of Mangroves and Coral reefs with organic enzymes, fixing the water quality. Do you think this would be the better approach?
61 more agrees trigger contact with the recipient
•
129 w
Using enzymes to break down oil before it penetrates deep into the mangrove habitat is a possible short term solution to ensuring the mangroves survive (assuming the enzymes are not a source of damaging pollution in their own right). However, this should not be taken as a long term solution. The correct and first course of action must be to prevent the oil from getting there in the first place. I am always concerned that money goes to "quick fix" environmental solutions rather than sustainable, natural ones.
•
•
•
129 w
Our organic enzymes are proven to be useful for removing the oil from the oceans, lakes, and other water bodies. Their action is biodegradative, unlike other chemicals that are in use now. The quality of water would be restored relatively in a shorter time than the current solutions. They are inexpensive too.

Injecting sustainability into the innovation engine. As an organic chemistry masters degree holder, Founder, and Chief Facilitator at Suraksha, I have been thinking about how we can bring change to prevent pollution at the source of origin for achieving sustainability. After a lot of discussion with experts, we have decided that massive training for future-proofing would be a great step. So we are launching courses to transform students, professionals, executives, and companies in 10 hours around the globe. Our journey began with the announcement of a course in India, touching the life science industry first. The course is on "Incorporating Sustainable Principles in Drug Discovery".
