ALL THE WRONG NEWS HEADLINES! Debate: Does anyone else think there is something wrong with the news headline below? Would better headlines read; Greedy corporations fuming over pollution stoppage. Or ? Governments sue multi trillion dollar oil and gas companies for decades of deception and corruption. Or ? Lawyers refuse to represent morally corrupt corporations for ethical reasons connected to environmental destruction! Or ? Multi trillion dollar corporations outraged that governments are refusing to allow them to pollute the planet any further! Or ? Governments refuse to be sued by companies that have deceived the global population about Climate change for over half a century. Or ? Global lawyers agree oil and gas companies are unable to sue governments. Or ? Governments legal teams refuse to be sued. Or ? Senior legal advocates agree ' no case to answer'. One judge goes further, stating, if you sold shareholders false premise, 'that's your problem to solve - not taxpayers debt to collect'..... 'Now that's corporate responsibility' the judge added! Please add your own no doubt witty and pithy suggestions below. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/fossil-fuel-firms-sue-governments-for-c2-a313bn-over-climate-action/ar-AAOycYJ

Seems some other people spotted the dumb ass legal predicament we are in; I propose a overarching legal rule that states in the event of almost certain human extinction due to the continued use of fossil fuels, government is no longer obliged to honour idiotic agreements made with companies that knew the environmental hazards but continued to profit seek! https://theconversation.com/how-treaties-protecting-fossil-fuel-investors-could-jeopardize-global-efforts-to-save-the-climate-and-cost-countries-billions-182135

I agree with the alternative wording suggested for the headline! “Greedy corporations etc….

Fossil fuel corporations need to be sued and nationalized. Literally put out of business. Now that a legal definition of ecocide has been established we have a basis to accomplish this goal.

UN climate leader's - Please read this survey and ask yourself if this is the world you would want anyone to grow up in!? One young person said; " I don't want to die, but I don't want to grow up in a world that doesn't care for children and animals" I'm in absolute agreement with this view - are you? Leaders, STOP acting for and on behalf of current vested interests and start acting for and on behalf of the greater good of all of humanity. Some people would like to portray environmental protection as theft! It isn't theft, it's a gift.... A gift that forthcoming generations should always have had, without question, a sustainable future! This is your reminder that you stole from them, you stole from their future! Now it's time to do the right thing. No Greenwash, no back sliding, no excuses, the time is now and only you the UN and global leadership can do it. I think the best thing that could happen with COP26 would be if the conference centre was submerged in a metre of floodwater on day one in order to focus people on system change. Rather than weak targets for 29 years from now.

All cop26 have been disappointing in practice. A complete consensus is always asked, a minimal agreement with not many holding up to it.

Calling on the G7 to come up with something incredible. A credible plan to positively tackle Climate change. A NO-nonsense plan that is functional within planetary boundaries. If the G7 send the signal - there is no doubt. If they quibble, they signal that ambiguity is acceptable. And it's not! It's not acceptable! You can challenge the details but not the fundamental, unequivocal science, it is clear. Stop the obfuscation, stop pandering to political views, stop the fudge and denial, Start the action. With the availability of new business models, new technologies and greater intergenerational equity in mind, we need qualified leadership that understands this, commited leaders that seek to restore and regenerate natural capital, leaders that are not scared of medium and long term strategy. Leaders that rise to restore and not destroy, leaders that are not afraid of the law of ecocide because they have no intention of committing such an act! Some highly privileged human beings live relatively long lives here in this world, but we all live relatively short lives in comparison to the age and duration of our planets available resources. So as we consume natural resources at faster rates than ever before we need desperately to restore natural investment towards harmony. Idea - All leaders should be sustainability qualified to be credible - if all government and corporate business leaders were trained in sustainability (and their advisors - to a highly competent level) and if their intrinsic observations were also in alignment, it would be self evident that to maintain a sustainable and globally habitable planet we need to act as intergenerational custodians. Immediate profit is only a short term vision for a company, a region or a nation state, the real prize is pivoting towards a net return for the natural world on an annual basis. If you want to be a credible political leader, a business leader, a civic or community leader make sure that you and your advisors are qualified to commit your efforts towards people, planet and sustainable growth. In that way voters and consumers can be sure that you know how to integrate and motivate critical supply chains to serve and protect our planet. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/ecocide-movement-pushes-new-international-crime-environmental-destruction-n1263142

Leaders live in a calculated ignorant bliss. They only act when absolutely necessary. The influencers for change do not control the narrative. The vast majority of people want a future that puts balanced biome before the elevated economic. When we are heard the downward spiral will turn.

@paul_krogh Mengele was a doctor, and therefore oaths are worthless to the victims of those who find reasons to break them. I imagine that we could educate from an early age about the importance of symbiotic relationships. The actions of humanity, the self proclaimed Stewards of this planet are consequential in the extreme , now that we have engineered ourselves into a position of complete dominance over many areas of the natural world.

ALL OIL & GAS COMPANIES (not just shell) should begin planting trees immediately, funded by the windfall profits of the Oil and Gas sector historically. The sector knew about the damage it was doing. It was reported to Congress over 40 years ago. Some leaders or politicians might like to portray this as a steal or a some kind of injustice, but it's not, not even slightly, the theft is the profit accrued through inaction and ongoing deceit. Although it might not be possible to plant these in one specific area, these new public goods should be distributed across the globe to account for the required historic forestry losses and excessive carbon emissions. These forests (and or seaweed farms) should be gifted to the public, in perpetuity as public environmental services to compensate for unpaid carbon dioxide emissions. Now that's an economic correction.

@Jehannes Ros Hmmm maybe, what about an extraction and clean up fund that is managed and ring fenced by concerned parties such as Greenpeace or an independent group of environmental agencies? Fossil fuels are still in global production, massively profitable wealth funds from historic profit still exist. 🤷🏼♂️
•

Of CO2 I guess, yes CCS would be good. Not by Greenpeace, please, but independent board. I don't know if shell is involved in that yet. CCS is very political for where it is allowed I think, Norway uses it. Increasing something like geothermal energy would still be a better cause imho.

This could have equally been called 'Greta Carta' but to be fair to the Prince, he has been banging on about the environment for over 50 years (and I'm not a Royalist of any kind). See link for 'Terra Carta' or 'Earth Charter'; https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffmcmahon/2021/01/09/prince-charles-agrees-with-greta-2050-is-too-late/?sh=7b1a3eff6caf It was refreshing to see them both meet (Greta and HRH) last year, discussing their shared concern for the planet. However 'back in the Day' when people were waking up to the systematic destruction of our pale blue dot it was already a concern to the agriculturally connected and environmentally aware Prince. These two have shown consistent and increasing sustained concern for the state of our planet as humanity has crashed through the critical tipping points that scientists have warned about and for that reason we've gotta cheer on these Uber resilient 'Climate Avengers'. Perhaps Jeff Bezos with his substantial earth fund should sponsor a handful of documentary film makers in each nation of the world and follow their stories as they try to adapt to a low carbon lifestyle! This would not only make great streaming viewing for Amazon (reality TV) but also offers the possibility of amazing local and global role models for citizens to see their progress, understand the different global practices and to share in their trials and tribulations. Allowing viewer's to understand how they can overcome the day to day hurdles of living a low carbon life would give everyday people, grounded practical examples of the changes they could make to shift to a similar carbon reduction..... The possibilities and spinoffs are endless - if Jeff won't do it perhaps another TV network will? Only sustainably produced products and services need apply for the advertising rights! There was a great project like this in Sweden ten years ago called https://onetonnelife.com/ The project involved the cooperation of A-hus (house maker), Vattenfall (energy company) and Volvo Cars, together with partners ICA (groceries) and Siemens (tech), to create a climate-smart life for the Lindell family for 6 months. The test period saw the Lindells cut their emissions from their normal 7.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year per person to 1.5 tonnes. The 80 per cent reduction in the Lindell family’s carbon emissions showed that it’s possible to make a real difference given the right motivation, know-how and technology. From the experiment the insight was that an average Swedish family could half their footprint without compromising any quality of life at all.

A lot of what we see and interact with shapes the way we think, act and frame the norm we inhabit. What strikes me most about the present is that despite all that we know from science, we still fail to pivot our policy and daily activity in a way that is appropriate to to the level and scale of the problem we face. I'd like to offer this idea! Global advertising should carry clear labelling (like cigarette warnings in the UK). So instead of selling us lifestyle, advertiser's must convey the social and environmental costs in an open and honest way. No hidden costs - the externalities are then obvious to everyone! Happy to elaborate on this and discuss... 💚💚 I'm not suggesting for a second that swearing needs to be a part of a culture change but this is a great example of a company that is changing the dialogue, trying new things and not afraid to fail and to try again. https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2020/11/brewdog-not-allowed-to-say-fk-on-billboards/

Have thought this for while. There have been attempts branding side to do it but whats lacking I believe is global harmony around a system and legislation to support it— no one organisation can implement the change so the ones that govts that need to be involved need mapping. The eu would be a good place to start in my opinion but sadly my country has just left and the hope of something like that here is small but worth still fighting for. Would be interested to email ideas if any uk based people are looking at this?
