Renowned Swedish scientist Johan Rockström has been awarded the prestigious Tyler Prize, often dubbed the environmental Nobel Prize, for his research on the boundaries of Earth's life-support systems. His Planetary Boundaries framework has revolutionized our understanding of environmental sustainability and highlighted the urgent need for global action to protect our planet's delicate balance. Rockström's work has identified nine planetary systems crucial for maintaining a stable climate and biodiversity, including the ozone layer, freshwater resources, and a stable climate. His research warns that we have exceeded safe boundaries, with alarming implications for humanity's future. In light of these findings, Rockström has shown the importance of collective action and global collaboration. He cautions against nationalist populism and underscores the crucial role of political leadership in addressing the climate crisis. Congratulations, Johan Rockström, on this well-deserved honour! I could not agree more than with Dr. Johan Rockström's commentary on the urgency of supply chain transformations. Businesses must take concrete actions to protect nature and the climate from tipping points. 1. Companies must adapt their supply chain models to be in line with a net-zero world 2. Companies need to create nature-positive supply chains 3. Carbon credits need to be high-integrity in order to allow businesses to invest in nature and climate solutions For the full commentary see here: https://www.reuters.com/business/sustainable-business/comment-how-urgent-action-protect-nature-now-will-shield-us-growing-climate-2022-10-05/

Awesome!

This really is the crux of the carbon issue, as without supply chains adapting to a net zero commitment, we are really never going to see the changes required in time.

Professor Johan Rockström at Stockholm university is appointed “Environmental Hero of the year” by WWF for his work and commitment to bringing the climate issue to the highest political level as one of the two heads of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, one of Europe's leading centers for climate and sustainability research. - It is a great honor to receive the award. At the same time, I really do not feel like a hero. We are so many who every day fight for a better world. Scientifically, we know that everyone must cooperate and do heroic deeds to succeed in the global transition to a fair and sustainable world, says Johan Rockström. Climate change needs to be talked about! We need people like Johan Rockström that raise the issue, do the research, spread the message and the science behind it. Well-deserved. Please listen to Johan’s speech at the Exponential Climate Action Summit III: https://youtu.be/mP-ZwuzwivU
Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, wrapped up the Exponential Climate Action Summit III by pointing out that COP 26 must be the moment where all members states agree to end all new investments in coal power plants. ”The most low-hanging fruit to decide upon in Glasgow, which must happen, is to have an agreement to end coal. This must be the moment where we say goodbye to yesterday’s provision of energy.” Johan also proposed 5 concrete goals for COP 26 to secure the natural carbon sinks and help us remain within the planetary boundaries. Watch the speech and learn about Johan Rockström’s 5 point list for COP26. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBFZmOeQ5dM&t=19415s

Thanks Johan for clearly communicating the science in your talk "The Future of the Earth in the Anthropocene". Two main takeaways: 1) It's absolutely critical that we do everything in our power to avoid irreversible planetary tipping points - on every level. 2) We need a stronger definition of sustainable development to ensure we solve the interconnected crises without creating new ones. Really like this suggestion from your talk: "Prosperity and Equity within Planetary Boundaries". Unfortunately this presentation is in Swedish - but for those of you who can understand it I highly recommend it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6no6Oa3l4FU

I also listened to the presentation - very insightful! It's a great overview of the latest within climate science. We still have time to act to avoid the worst irreversible changes, but we need to act fast!

Can anyone tell me if these presentations are available after the fact? In Australia they come on fairly late at night and it would be great to watch them through clear eyes!

Awesome presentation Johan! Though I joined in late, I'm super glad I didn't miss this great dialogue. I support the decision to have more exponential climate summit involving developing countries and themes around food, agriculture and others. I'm happy to have witnessed this event.
