Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has unveiled her administration’s short and long term plans towards easing water shortage in Dar es Salaam, mentioning deep wells in Kigamboni and Kidunda water supply reservoir projects as workable solutions. President Hassan was responding to Dar es Salaam’s regional commissioner Amos Makala, who was updating the President on workable solutions towards water shortage that has hit Dar es Salaam and Pwani regions, at a clean cooking solution conference on Tuesday. “Climate impacts are attributed by two factors – natural and man-made causes, in this conference, we have been informed that Pwani is one of the leading regions as far as deforestation is concerned hence causing water sources to dry up,,” she remarked.

A majority of Tanzanians rely on wood and agricultural residues for their energy needs, causing deforestation and environmental degradation. The problem, of course, doesn’t stop there. Deforested areas no longer provide a home for wildlife leading to biodiversity loss and are also susceptible to soil erosion.

There is definitely need for sensitization in Tanzania on the ugly effects of deforestation and educate them on better sources of fuel .Well before its too late

@winnie_nguru Indeed the reigning government should take drastic action on his matter. Illegal timber logging business is also on the increase in TZ and that is a contributing factor to the high rate of deforestation. That has got to be tamed by having stringent rules take root.

Thank you our Minister of State in the Vice President's Office (Union and Environment) and Our President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Minister of State in the Vice President's Office (Union and Environment), Seleman Jafo instructed all students countrywide, each to plant a tree, manage and take full responsibility to help confront the effects of climate change. Mr Jafo gave the directives during his visit in Tanga to inspect and promote various environmental conservation activities. The minister said the government's intention is to plant a total of 1.5 million trees per each council, an equivalent of 276 million trees in all the 139 councils. "If every student strives to plant a tree, kindergarten, primary and secondary student's plant one tree and manage it for the whole year, this will be our savior in facing these environmental challenges," the Minister said. In addition the minister said the level of deforestation has resulted in partial rains and rising temperatures. He said cases of death of animals as a result of drought are increasing. Mr. Jafo stressed the importance of training school children in the culture of tree planting in order to have a generation that loves and watches over their environment. Also President Samia Suluhu Hassan spoke about the impacts of climate change on a global scale. “The challenges of climate change are affecting food security, livelihoods, and income of our people. Tanzania's government spends 2 to 3 percent of GDP to mitigate and build the resilience of communities, and this is a lot in a country that is still fighting against poverty coupled with the emergency of the COVID19 pandemic. The pandemic has compromised the capacity to respond to the harmful impact of climate change. Therefore, our actions today determine the future of our planet in terms of climate change” She said So environmental justice is about developing a system to ensure that human beings and ecosystems are treated fairly in ways that will reduce climate change and other environmental challenges. https://allafrica.com/stories/202201170863.html https://www.tnrf.org/en/content/tanzania%E2%80%99s-president-hon-samia-suluhu-calls-climate-change-actions-un-summit

The We dont have time - Kenya is collaborating with local climate change actors and partners to plant trees and rehabilitate local water resources that have been degraded by rampart deforestation, and other actions on the roadmap to COP27. As highlighted in the article below in Kiswahili - the regional representative Mr. Patrick Kiarie appreciated the efforts by the local partners to increase tree coverage in Kenya. He also urged more Kenyans to take action toward the climate crisis. He highlighted the upcoming Climate Week NYC, US and COP27, Egypt. https://taifaleo.nation.co.ke/shirika-la-we-dont-have-time-laendelea-na-shughuli-za-upanzi-wa-miti-nchini/

New investigation by Unearthed, reveals BP's (and others') dirty oil secret in Iraq. The company has been banking major profits from its operations in Iraq while not declaring “huge levels of emissions” from those fields. BP has failed to report massive flaring emissions from one of its projects in Iraq – equivalent to the annual emissions of over 970,000 petrol cars. BP jointly owns the Rumaila operating company but denies responsibility for its emissions. In impoverished Iraq, the vast majority of gas produced during oil production is flared, which exacerbates climate change. Unearthed identified that flaring emissions are totally unreported in the Rumaila and Zubair fields in Iraq, where BP and Eni hold stakes and make millions of dollars each year. Based on its ownership of the operating company, BP’s share of flaring for the Rumaila field was estimated to be equivalent to 4.52 million tonnes of CO2 in 2021 amounting to double the UK oil industry’s total flaring emissions for that year. “The oil giant is trying to appear ‘woke’ in the West while remaining dirty in the Global South – but this needs to be called out for what it is. It’s racism woven into corporate behaviour. Shareholders and voters must not stand for it a second longer". These operations have had a huge negative impact on the population living there and leaked information from the Iraqi health ministry blames pollution from the oil industry, as well as other sources, for a 20% rise in cancer in Basra between 2015 and 2018. A second leaked document, seen by the BBC, from the local government in Basra shows that cancer cases in the region are three times higher than figures published in the official nationwide cancer registry. https://projects.unearthed.greenpeace.org/big-oil-iraq/
