Find out how student activism, methane detection from space and agricultural research is helping with: Policies to spur deployment of large capital to climate action Reduction in methane gas in industries, urban environments and agriculture Food security and agricultural resiliency on Earth It's free to attend and open to all. Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/astor-perkins-quarterly-series-tickets-151677689051 The Role of Climate Activism on Legislation and Capital Nick Engelfried, Youth Activist & Author Ilana Cohen, Youth Climate Activist and Freelance Climate Journalist Satellite Detection of Global Methane Emissions Professor Steven Wofsy, Abbott Lawrence Rotch Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Science, Harvard University More precise than other methane-sensing satellites that came before, MethaneSAT will allow scientists to track emissions to their sources and provide key data for reduction efforts. The MethaneSAT project has an ambitious policy goal: reduce global methane emissions from oil and gas facilities by 45 percent by 2025 and 70 percent by 2030. If achieved, it would have a similar impact on the climate over 20 years as closing one-third of the world’s coal plants. EDF plans to make the data publicly available — in near real time — to researchers, lobbyists, regulators, and others. Harvard’s Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability recently awarded a grant to a multidisciplinary project, headed by the Harvard Kennedy School’s Robert Stavins, that involves 17 faculty members from six Harvard Schools and seeks to leverage publicly available data on methane — including from MethaneSAT — to affect policies and cut emissions. Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space Professor Matthew Gilliham, Director of the Waite Research Institute, University of Adelaide and Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space aims to create on-demand, zero-waste, high-efficiency plants and plant products to address grand challenges in sustainability for Space and on Earth. Significant advances in plant, food, and sensory science; process and systems engineering; law and policy; and psychology are expected to deliver transformative solutions for Space habitation – and create enhanced plant-derived food and bioresources to capitalize upon emergent and rapidly expanding domestic and global markets. Anticipated outcomes include industry uptake of innovative plant forms, foods, technologies, and commodities; and the ability to incorporate new insights into agriculture here on Earth for sustainability and resiliency. Harvard University recently purchased four Proterra electric buses, along with the necessary charging infrastructure. The new buses, which will replace four biodiesel-powered vehicles, represent about a third of Harvard’s fleet. Each 35-foot Proterra transit bus has a seating capacity of 29, and features a 450 kWh battery pack and an 800-volt system architecture. The shuttles will be charged during off-peak overnight hours, using 150 kW charging stations that can deliver a full charge in about three hours. The project was supported by a Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection grant program, which is funding nearly 100 transportation electrification projects across the state. Harvard has already electrified several campus operations, including electric leaf blowers and service vehicles, and has installed dozens of EV charging stations across the campus in Cambridge and Allston. “Harvard takes its responsibility of being a good neighbor seriously,” added David Harris, Director of Transit & Fleet Management. “One of the great things about this project is that the buses will produce much less noise and operate far more smoothly as they navigate the densely populated streets of Cambridge and Allston.” “Investing in electric buses will have a positive impact on the health of people on our campus and in the Cambridge and Boston area,” said Heather Henriksen, Managing Director of the Harvard Office for Sustainability. “Harvard hopes to be a catalyst for other universities, businesses, and cities by piloting the transition to electric buses.”

We need a call to action for Harvard University to ensure a livable future for its students. We need Harvard University to end its investments in the fossil fuel industry which decimates entire ecosystems and communities. We need Harvard University to protect our future as much as we are studying to prepare for ours. It is not enough to just recycle anymore, we need to have the political will to divest from fossil fuels. The world needs universities like Harvard to be the kickstarters of this movement to show that pollution and extraction are no longer "business as usual" and the new "business as usual" is clean air, clean water, renewable energy, and no pollution. Agree to this campaign if you think Harvard should stop investing in fossil fuel corporations. Hashtags: #DivestHarvard #DivestHarvardPetition Photo credit: InsideClimate News

Fossil fuels contributed to climate changes. By changing energy sources we can stop the aggravation of climate.
