Green Buzz Podcast Harnessing Hydro – The Power of Community Energy In this ‘Green Buzz’ podcast, we discuss the need for more of a buzz around community hydropower. We begin by thinking about the different types of hydropower and the carbon and methane emissions of larger projects. We also talk about hydro’s green taxonomy, financing, costs, grid capacity/ smart grids, policy issues and and being inspired by community energy members in Cumbria, Wales and Reading. Green Buzz Podcast Harnessing Low Carbon Hydrogen - Hacking Through The Thorns? 2023 is set to be a big year for hydrogen and in this Green Buzz podcast, hosted by the Green Finance Community Hub, we discuss various hydrogen projects across the North of England and drill down to how hydrogen fits into Cumbria’s Clean Energy Strategy and the possibilities and actual plans of multi-coloured hydrogen (green, blue and pink) production there. We also consider the business case and the investment risks for green hydrogen and whether being a first mover in this space is an advantage - or as hard as hacking through a field of thorns. We hope you find it useful. To listen click here. www.greenfinancecommunityhub.co.uk

I enjoyed hosting this podcast. Hydrogen has a diverse range of applications and in particular it could help decarbonize heavy industry, replace natural gas, and store renewable energy and as such, it represents a multi-trillion-dollar market opportunity, globally. Right now, though – there is still a lot of work to do to find the most economical way to re-purpose our assets. It is good, though, to see large (industrial clusters) and smaller hydrogen projects taking shape.

I enjoyed hosting this podcast. Hydropower is a proven technology that with the right policies in place can be quickly deployed. Hydropower also enjoys flexibility of generation and is a long-term energy storage solution where water is pumped uphill using excess energy at peak production times and then released downhill to spin turbines to create electricity when energy is needed. For community led/owned hydro projects - surplus profits are often invested back into the community through grants that benefit the local community in multiple ways.
