Electricity bills rose across France on 1 February and steadily over the past year. But in tiny Muttersholtz - a French village with just 2,200 inhabitants - the price-hike was greeted with some nonchalance. The village in North East France is powered by renewable energy and has built three turbines on its river, insulated its municipal buildings and installed photovoltaic solar panels on the roofs of several buildings. The ecorevamp cost more than €2 million - but the town is already reaping the benefits. The municipality's energy consumption dropped by 40 per cent between 2008 and 2020. Public buildings - like schools and council offices - use just 10 per cent of the energy that is produced. The council sells the remaining 90 per cent. The town was elected the French village of biodiversity in 2017 for its pioneering use of solar and hydropower. Locals believe that other towns should learn from its successes.

Veterinarians are critical public health professionals. Veterinary practitioners across the globe, regardless of sector, are committed to promoting public health. The nature of veterinary training inherently promotes an interdisciplinary approach to solving global health problems, including integrated use of public health practices such as disease detection, reporting, and surveillance, as well as health education and prevention. It is well established that the health of animals contributes to the health of humans, and vice versa, in multiple ways; by protecting against zoonotic disease, bolstering a sustainable food supply, fostering the human-animal bond, and preserving ecological systems. We believe that involving veterinarians in decision-making has significant advantages over dealing with problems in health professional silos, as has been the case with coordinated human and animal zoonoses vaccination efforts, integrated diagnostic laboratory infrastructure, and integrated surveillance and response to disease outbreaks. The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, including veterinarians, to solve global health problems has been exemplified with COVID-19. The issue of climate change and its impact on planetary health is no different. The need for veterinarians to acknowledge climate change as within their scope of practice, redefine their roles in the climate change space, and take ownership and active roles as stewards of climate change adaptation and resilience. Climate change impacts the planet, public health and veterinary practice. Ultimately, climate change is a public health problem, veterinarians are public health professionals, and, thus, climate change and the promotion of planetary health are veterinary issues. However, these kinds of activities cannot be conducted within a vacuum, and support from cross-sector collaborations, stakeholders, and policy are critical for veterinarians to be effective stewards in these areas. Gaps must be bridged between veterinary practice and policy decision-making to ensure veterinarians are supported in public health capacities. At Veterinarians International, we recognize the importance of the One Health approach: the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. Policy makers must include the voices of veterinarians in their decision making process around climate agendas.

Oslo, Norway — Electric vehicles accounted for almost four out of every five new car registrations in Norway last year, setting a new record, according to figures released Monday. Led by U.S. carmaker Tesla, which topped the list with a 12.2% market share, 138,265 new electric cars, that makes up almost 80% of total passenger car sales were sold in the Scandinavian country last year, representing 79.3% of total passenger car sales, the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) said in a statement. In doing so, Norway, which is both a major producer of oil and gas, as well as a pioneer for zero-emission cars, comfortably beat the previous record of 64.5% set in 2021. Comparatively, electric cars made up just 8.6% of new car registrations in the European Union over the first nine months of 2022. In December alone, electric cars hogged 82.8% of sales as Norwegian households rushed to buy them before a tax change came into force in 2023.

What's most stunning about the Project is its size!! Imagine a seemingly endless prairie wheat or canola field. Except this land is filled with steel piles: 228,000 of them, when the last one is finally driven into the ground. The plant was shuttered in 2013 because it was considered obsolete and because Ontario ( The Coal free City) chose to increasingly stop producing energy from coal. Now the plant will be home to a new solar park with a 44-megawatt solar installation. What's more????? A kilometre or so down a service road in Lomond, Alta., in Vulcan County, the next phase of construction is taking shape: row upon row of black solar panels, already tilting at the sun. The panels will be installed on and near the former plant and north of Lake Erie. When complete, the nearly 3,300 acres (1,335 ha) of land will be covered in 1.3 million solar panels, each one of them 1.2 by 1.8 meters in size. The project will produce enough electricity to power 150,000 homes, provide much-needed jobs and investment in the area, and exploit Alberta's renewable resources — a timely endeavour given the increased demand for green energy, and a global priority as world leaders gather in Sharm El Sheikh for this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27). This project has it all: a coal plant will be transformed into a renewable energy one, substituting fossil fuels for clean power. Let's give them a climate idea for this total green transition!!! We need to rally behind Kansas residents through sending a warning to its city officials for allowing Keystone Pipeline company to continue its dangerous operation in the city, yet with so many history of spillages affecting wildlife and residents!!! The recent Keystone pipeline spill pictured below in a creek running through rural pastureland in Washington County, Kansas, about 150 miles northwest of Kansas City, is now the biggest in the system's history, according to U.S. Department of Transportation data. The operator, Canada-based TC Energy, said the pipeline that runs from Canada to Oklahoma lost about 14,000 barrels, or 588,000 gallons. The spill raised questions for environmentalists and safety advocates about whether TC Energy should keep a federal government permit that has allowed the pressure inside parts of its Keystone system — including the stretch through Kansas — to exceed the typical maximum permitted levels. With Congress facing a potential debate on reauthorizing regulatory programs, the chair of a House subcommittee on pipeline safety took note of the spill Friday. Help Kansas, to demand their rights by sending this climate warning!!! SOURCE : heguardian.com/environment/2022/dec/21/oil-spills-keystone-pipeline-seem-worse-kansas

Ontario’s elimination of coal-fired electricity stands as the single largest greenhouse gas reduction initiative in North America and was primarily responsible for Ontario achieving its 2014 emissions reduction target of 6% below 1990 levels. In 2003, coal represented approximately 25%, or 7,560 MW, of Ontario's supply mix. In 2014, coal represented 0%, all while grid reliability and domestic supply improved. According to an independent study, Ontario’s coal-fired power plants cost the people of Ontario an estimated $4.4 billion per year in health, environmental, and financial damages. The elimination of coal-fired electricity was a shared effort between the Ontario Ministry of Energy and two of its agencies: - Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the largest generator of electricity in the province, primarily through hydroelectric and nuclear sites. - The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), whose duties include both procuring electricity supply and planning the electricity system over the long-term. Learn how Ontario became the first North American government to eliminate coal-fired electricity generation, paving the way for a cleaner, greener electricity system. Australia is the first major economy to reverse its classification for woody biomass burned to make energy. Under a new policy, wood harvested from native forests and burned for energy can't be classified as a renewable energy source. Why they deserve a climate love? That decision comes as the U.S, Canada, Eastern Europe, Vietnam and other forest nations continue gearing up to harvest their woodlands to make massive amounts of wood pellets, in order to supply biomass-fired power plants in the UK, EU, Japan, South Korea and elsewhere. The impact of this regulatory change is perhaps most significant for the setback it may pose to the biomass industry globally, hindering the multibillion-dollar wood pellet industry from getting started Down Under at a time when pellet production is rising in the U.S. Southeast and British Columbia in order to supply growing demand to the EU, UK and Asia. In the EU, forest advocates continue with last-ditch lobbying efforts to have woody biomass stripped of its renewable energy designation, and end the ongoing practice of providing large subsidies to the biomass industry for wood pellets. Burning wood to make electricity is not renewable and it's not smart and finally a large country says so! SOURCE : Mongabay News

Why they deserve a climate love? Ghana presented at a dedicated event at COP27 the first-ever bilaterally authorized project to be implemented under this mechanism. Ghana and Switzerland have completed the first ever voluntary sale of ITMOs under Article 6.2. The Ghana project will support the training of over thousands of rice farmers – covering nearly 80 percent of Ghana’s rice production – in sustainable agricultural practices, leading to significant methane emission reductions. The intervention will also provide extra income through carbon revenue to farmers for increased resilience and improve efficiency of water use. With this transaction, sustainable rice farming in Ghana will help Switzerland lower its national emissions, while giving Ghanaian farmers an extra revenue stream. Furthermore, it's the first developing country to have fully developed it's article 6 carbon market framework with a clear institutional governance structure for authorization, issuance, reporting and recording. While Article 6 remains to be fully finalized??? The trade shows that countries do not need to wait for COP negotiations to end to act collaboratively on climate!!! During this week, U.S Africa summit, the White House, a U.S. Government-led partnership, Power Africa which convenes the collective resources of the private sector, international development organizations, and governments from around the world to increase energy access and to end energy poverty in sub-Saharan Africa released documents on their successes so far! In 2021 alone, Power Africa-supported renewable energy projects helped prevent 6.2 million tons of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of burning 6.8 billion pounds of coal. Since 2013, Power Africa has helped deliver access to electricity to nearly 165 million people across sub-Saharan Africa. The Biden-Harris Administration has invested $193 million to support Power Africa and plans to provide another $100 million in FY 2023. The progress so far? - 34.6 MILLION New Electricity Connections - 14,000 MW financially closed - 6,500 MW of new electricity turning lights on across the continent - 80 percent of online power projects use renewable energy Lastly, this year alone 2022, more than $180 million in funds providing renewable energy solutions, including the Mirova Gigaton Fund, SDG Investment Fund, the Africa Renewable Energy Fund II, and the SunFunder Solar Energy Transformation Fund. In the wake of reports about the worrying state of Colorado, living with less water in the U.S. Southwest is the focus this week for state and federal water administrators, tribal officials, farmers, academics and business representatives meeting about the drought-stricken and overpromised Colorado River. The Colorado River provides water for 40 million people. But its flows are shrinking as the planet heats up, reducing the snowpack that feeds the river and causing more water to evaporate as the river snakes its way from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of California. The Colorado River Water Users Association conference, normally a largely academic three-day affair, comes at a time of growing concern about the river's future after more than two decades of record drought attributed to climate change. Case in point is the 2012 Colorado River Basin study by the Bureau of Reclamation. Almost all the states took the same position they did in 1922, which was “Well, we need more water.” They ignored what was happening back home and went back to traditional game theory — if you’re going to be negotiating with somebody, you’ve got to overstate your demands. Congress should address climate crisis & fix Colorado river!!! Source : Grist

They should make sure it is not compromised by "forever chemicals" before promising water to anyone. The Colorado Springs creek poisoned us for many years. Not just the creek itself, but the Fountain/Security/Widefield area had it's water basin polluted, enough so that anyone whom has been diagnosed with kidney cancer, or any other accepted diagnosis, can participate in a lawsuit against the Air Force Academy, the purported cause of the "pollution." Colorado is the highest source of life-damaging radon, and they are about to begin searching for uranium again, in Cañon City. Aren't there any protections at ALL, for citizens of our state, OR for the people whom are counting on Colorado water to be as clean as a Rocky Mountain stream is suggested to be?!

Currently, the space-based Earth observation technology, is manned by developed nations who inform Africa nations in deepening our understanding of our home planet. For example, in the United States space-based observations help wildfire-prone regions contain damage, saving lives and minimizing economic losses. Just last month, Uganda and Zimbabwe launched their first Earth observation satellites, which will perform analyses of water quality, land use cover, and soil fertility. Through this accord, NASA is looking forward to partnering with African nations on future applications for space-based Earth-observations to fight climate change! Today, HSBC, Europe's biggest bank has announced today, it will no longer finance new oil and gas field as part of its updated climate strategy. HSBC has made a big step forward on climate, which proves that U.S. banks can step it up to do the same. Financial institutions write large play a really, really important role in keeping afloat the fossil fuel economy that we have, but also they have a huge role and an opportunity to drive the shift towards a clean energy economy. Climate campaigners welcomed the moved saying HSBC provided a new baseline for other major banks but urged the bank to go further. The bank said it would still provide financing to existing fossil fuel projects "in line with current and future declining global oil and gas demand." It would also continue to provide finance and advisory services to energy sector clients but will assess the companies' plans to transition to clean energy. My region, sub-Saharan Africa, which has experienced more frequent and more intense climate extremes over the past decades, the ramifications of the world’s warming by more than 1.5° C would be profound. Here's an insight by Albert Zeufack, Chief Economist for Africa at the World Bank on the subject. “Apart from loss of lives and livelihoods and damage to essential infrastructure, climate change disproportionately affects the poorest households perpetuating the cycle of poverty and vulnerability. African countries can seize the opportunity of global decarbonization to transform the economy and create jobs, including in manufacturing,” Recent publications by World Banks enlists priorities on how governments, regional bodies and African leaders can improve resilience and spur economic growth across the region. https://www.worldbank.org/en/publication/africa-pulse

Last week, I attended a virtual event themed : Designing Healthy, Sustainable Cities with Children and Young People hosted by London School Of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Together with the panelists we explored the connections between cities, children and young people and the environment, a critical topic this age in sustainability matters. During the event, participants got a preview of new findings from the Children, Cities and Climate (CCC) project on the child health co-benefits of radically cutting fossil fuel burning and air pollution in 16 selected cities around the world. The results of an online global survey asking young people about their views on their cities, including what they like about their urban environment, what they would like to change and what they think about air quality where they live, will also be shared. The event featured a diverse range of panelists, who shared their insights on the topic from different cities across the globe. Participants were also invited to ask questions and to share their ideas for designing healthy, sustainable cities with and for children and young people. Let's create a healthier & sustainable cities that suits young people needs! https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/events/designing-healthy-sustainable-cities-children-and-young-people

In Mukuru Kwa Njenga, as we get to weekends, this quarry will attracts more and more visitors stunned by it's beauty. A lot of history is all round you, you just have to know where to look. I have been photographing this site together, with friends and community members in the recent months. The quarry has been left untreated after closure since my childhood years and is causing extensive land disturbance and has negative safety and environmental impacts. The original ecosystems has been removed, the original topography has been significantly changed, the fundamental ecological relations are irreversibly disrupted, and the biodiversity is greatly reduced. The management of land use, landscape and biodiversity challenges resulting from quarry operations is an important aspect of Sustainable Development. Negative impacts of abandoned quarries include degraded scenery, landscape fragmentation, loss of biodiversity and decreased quantity and pollution, plastics are seeing below in one part. Due to the absence of national policy, most quarries have not been developed using environmental concepts and in preparation for post operation reclamation or restoration. Sustainable quarrying activities consider conservation of the ecosystem with rehabilitation of landform and land cover to approximate the initial state. Most residents here believe, this place can be turned into a recreational site for specific projects and programs which if successfully implemented will ensure sustainable use and development of the abandoned quarry in relation to other land uses. Join the call, for rehabilitation, plans!

Poor air quality is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our day. It is particularly difficult to address because of the localized nature of impacts esp in designing healthier urban poor communities in Africa. In Mukuru, an urban slum in Nairobi, locals have successfully used community science to address other environmental threats such as water pollution. But air quality monitoring devices have historically been too costly for local organizations. However, it has become increasingly clear that traditional air pollution monitoring programs do not provide information needed to address the impacts communities are facing. The focus of traditional air pollution monitoring has been on area-wide pollutants which allowed the use of regional monitors to detect pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide. Using neighborhood scale monitoring that quite localized risks from air toxics exposure could be quite high compared to those identifiable at the regional scale, and thus create significant public health risk. At the same time, new, low-cost air quality monitoring technologies have become available to communities, enabling them to assess air quality on a local scale. The power of citizen scientists!
