European venture capital firm World Fund, which invests in start-up firms producing technologies that tackle climate change and protect the environment, said it had raised 300 million euros ($328 million) for its first fund. The Berlin-based firm World Fund said subscribers for this included the EU's European Investment Fund, BPI France, PWC Germany and the UK's Environment Agency Pension Fund. Many financial firms have put money into sectors dealing with climate change, due to persistent concerns over global warming and the environment. The first fundraising for World Fund comes amid a broader backdrop of lower investments in the global private equity sector as a whole, due to global economic uncertainty. PWC said in a report last October that investment and grants in climate tech startups had fallen by roughly 40% over the last 12 months, although that decline was less than in the broader venture capital industry globally. "We will work to ensure that our fund demonstrates to the world that successful investments and positive climate impact go hand-in-hand. In this way, we hope to provide a service to the entire climate investment sector," said World Fund managing partner Danijel Visevic in a statement.* This is great. Exactly what we need. let's #MoveTheMoney to the funds that solve the climate crisis. Picture from my interview with World Fund, General Partner & Co-Founder, Danijel Visevic Interview - Davos 2024. In Medellín, the second largest city of Colombia, a green revolution is happening to combat rising urban temperatures. Through the creation of "Green Corridors," the city has witnessed a 2°C drop in temperatures in just three years. The project, costing $16.3 million, has seen over 2.5 million plants and 880,000 trees strategically placed to maximize their impact. At the heart of this initiative are citizen-gardeners, whose tireless efforts, alongside specialised forest engineers, ensure the corridors thrive. Trained in horticulture and landscaping, these individuals, often from marginalised communities, are carrying Medellín's green revolution. The benefits extend beyond temperature reduction. The corridors have led to a decline in air pollution, with PM2.5 levels dropping significantly. Cycling rates have surged, thanks to new bike paths, while biodiversity studies reveal the return of wildlife to urban spaces. Inspired by Medellín's success, other cities are adopting similar initiatives. But challenges remain, including maintenance and funding issues. Despite this, Mayor Gutiérrez is committed to expanding the project and embracing innovative solutions. What an inspiring story for the Colombian city, showing that when there is intention and citizens engagement so much can be done! https://reasonstobecheerful.world/green-corridors-medellin-colombia-urban-heat/

I am impressed by ''Twende Green Ecocycles'' a Mombasa-based plastic waste recycling company that has a commendable mission of addressing the marine plastic waste issue in Kenya while simultaneously contributing to educational development by manufacturing eco-desks for schools. Their mission to address marine plastic waste while supporting education is highly commendable. It aligns with both environmental sustainability and social responsibility goals. Marine plastics threaten marine species and coastal tourism, and contributes to climate change. When plastics get into oceans, they break down into microplastics which are consumed by marine animals. So this start up work of creating eco-friendly school furniture not only helps in waste management but also promotes environmental awareness among students and communities around and more so protecting our oceans https://www.africanews.com/2024/03/07/marine-plastic-waste-turned-into-school-desks-and-chairs-in-kenya/?fbclid=IwAR1TPsKm2NeI6AlWJjBYJKffKcEnhSXh327vtliJt6d5MnE7ZUfJmTmLr2U

Polar Night Energy and the Finnish district heating company Loviisan Lämpö have entered into an agreement to build an industrial-scale Sand Battery in Pornainen for Loviisan Lämpö’s district heating network. The heating power of the new Sand Battery is 1 MW and it can store up to 100 MWh of thermal energy, making it about ten times larger than the Sand Battery in operation in Kankaanpää since 2022. The purpose of the Sand Battery is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of the district heating production in the Pornainen municipality and introduce a new flexible heat production technology. The thermal energy storage medium will be crushed soapstone, a byproduct of Tulikivi's production of heat retaining fireplaces. "Loviisan Lämpö is moving towards more environmentally friendly energy production. With the Sand Battery, we can significantly reduce energy produced by combustion and completely eliminate the use of oil," says Mikko Paajanen, CEO of Loviisan Lämpö in a press statement. Alberta, which produces most of Canada's crude oil, will ban renewable power projects on prime agricultural land and erect buffer zones to ensure wind turbines do not spoil scenic views, the provincial government said on Wednesday. The province gave few details and said more announcements would follow, prompting one green group to complain that "an uncertainty bomb" had been dropped on a once booming sector. Last year, Alberta temporarily halted approvals of major new projects amid concerns over renewables' reliability and land use, cooling investment in the industry and challenging the federal Liberal government's clean energy ambitions. https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canadas-alberta-set-ban-renewables-projects-prime-land-report-2024-02-28/

"Here's the good news: If we achieve true net zero, then the temperatures will start to stabilize almost immediately, with a lag time of as little as three to five years. And if we maintain true net zero, half of all the human-caused global warming pollution will have been removed from the atmosphere in as little as 25 to 30 years. It has also taken other measures for energy efficiency and emissions reductions, including waste diversion, food waste collection, etc. Having stadiums implement sustainability measures is a good step to make sports greener! Do you have other examples of what sports clubs or stadiums have implemented to reduce their impact on the planet? 👇 Read more: https://pv-magazine-usa.com/2024/02/07/super-bowl-to-be-hosted-in-first-100-renewable-energy-nfl-stadium/

This weekend in France, thousands, including the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, were demonstrating against a pretty unhinged project: the drilling of eight new oil wells in the forest of La Teste-de-Buch, located around the Bassin d'Arcachon and one hour from Bordeaux. The project has sparked controversy. And despite being at odds with the 2017 law aimed at halting hydrocarbon exploitation in France by 2040, it received approval after a public inquiry. The 2017 Hulot law had outlined the cessation of oil and gas production in France by 2040, a target that seems increasingly distant as at least eighteen hydrocarbon concession projects have progressed since its enactment. The authorisation for drilling in Gironde now joins this list. The project, carried out by the Canadian company Vermilion, aims to access new hydrocarbon reserves situated between 2,000 and 3,000 meters deep, with the hope of offsetting the natural annual decline of 15% in already exploited deposits. Despite claims made by Vermilion about minimal environmental impact due to directional drilling techniques, critiques argue that these are still industrial installations with inherent risks. The forest area surrounding the wells is classified under Natura 2000, highlighting the ecological significance of the region Moreover, the decision runs counter to global efforts to mitigate climate change. With the world's attention focused on transitioning away from fossil fuels, the authorisation of new oil wells in France sends a contradictory message. The response from government officials has been mixed. Christophe Béchu, Minister of Ecological Transition, argues for the necessity of oil extraction while acknowledging its potential environmental impacts. 🤡 and the Minister of Energy Roland Lescure has also recently expressed a positive opinion on it. What are these politicians thinking? Can they ONE time see further away than their noses? And think long-term? https://reporterre.net/En-Gironde-un-avis-favorable-pour-des-nouveaux-forages-petroliers https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20240211-greta-thunberg-marches-in-france-against-oil-drilling https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20240210-greta-thunberg-joins-banned-french-anti-motorway-protest

In the heart of Thika, a town pulsating with life and a commitment to environmental sustainability, 'We Don't Have Time' orchestrated a phenomenal tree planting event, aptly named 'Greening Thika Estates.' The sunlit morning witnessed an impressive turnout of over 400 enthusiastic individuals, all converging at Christina Gardens, a public haven brimming with the promise of a greener future. Organized in collaboration with the spirited 'Green Warriors,' a formidable force in environmental activism, 'We Don't Have Time' proudly stood as patrons of this eco-friendly spectacle. The camaraderie was palpable as numerous other organizations joined hands, turning this event into a collective endeavor for a healthier planet. The ambitious mission kicked off with the planting of more than 300 trees, transforming the landscape along prominent locales like Kenyatta Highway, Majengo Estate, Starehe Estate, and Pilot Estate. The verdant wave of change swept through Thika, leaving a trail of fresh hope and sustainable aspirations. The culmination of this eco-journey led the participants to the iconic YMCA Thika, where the seeds of camaraderie and environmental stewardship were sown. It was not just about planting trees; it was a celebration of unity, shared purpose, and the birth of 'Green Warriors.' This organization, spearheaded by the 'Green Warriors,' marked its inception during the event, symbolizing a new era of environmental guardianship. The collective effort wasn't a solo act; rather, it was a symphony of dedicated organizations playing their part in the environmental concerto. Eco Shades, Empower Networks CBO, Tuko Strong Pamoja, Kenya Red Cross, Tenji Designs and Interior Clinic, Mount Kenya University, Dreams, Kenya News Agency, V-Spot, Boresha Jamii, Matunda Mazuri, Kenya Youth Organization, The County Government of Kiambu, and YMCA – each entity added a unique note to this harmonious green melody. The vibrancy of the event was further amplified by the youthful energy that permeated every corner. Most of the attendees were enthusiastic youth, embodying the spirit of change and the promise of a sustainable tomorrow. Their commitment to the cause echoed the sentiment that the future belongs to those who plant seeds today. Beyond the planting and the pledges, the event encapsulated the true essence of community engagement. It was a collective vow to nurture the saplings, cultivate green mindsets, and weave a tapestry of environmental consciousness that extends beyond a single day. 'Greening Thika Estates' was more than a tree planting event; it was a symbol of unity, a promise for a greener future, and the advent of 'Green Warriors' heralding a new era of environmental advocacy in Thika. As the sun set on YMCA Thika, the planted trees stood tall, whispering promises of a thriving and sustainable Thika to future generations.

When a Climate Review is trending on We Don't Have Time, we always seek to get a response from the recipient and establish a Climate Dialogue. What started as a Climate Warning ⚠️ to state-managed pension fund AP7 for its investment in Saudi Aramco Oil, has now resulted in an in-depth interview with Johan Florén, Chief ESG, at AP7. AP7 argues, with reference to this study, that it wouldn't make a difference if it sold its shares in fossil fuel companies. Why? Because AP7 is not buying these shares directly from the companies, but on a secondary market, meaning that if AP7 were to sell its shares, another investor would step in to purchase them. The better way, argues AP7, is to be an active owner and use that influence to push for change. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXZS6K7p5Cc This is a short version of the interview. The full 1-hour interview will be published on wedonthavetime.org/play on February 5th. But AP7 has also blacklisted 36 coal companies for failing to make climate progress. This is confusing to us. If active ownership is the only way to influence companies, then what's the point with blacklisting? And why, then, should a fossil fuel company care if an investor put it on a blacklist? We Don't Have Time believes that scale is what matters. Action by just a few investors might not make a difference, but if money starts moving on a massive scale, change will happen. According to a IEA, clean energy investment must reach $4,5 trillion per year by 2030 to keep the heating of our planet within safe limits. But still, too much money is moving the other way. Pension funds and other institutional investors have invested $3 trillion in oil, coal and gas. $3 trillion is roughly 3 percent of all the money in the world. Does anyone truly believe that it wouldn't affect companies' stockmarket value if pension funds sold their shares in fossil fuels and invest this money in green companies to help them instead? AP7 has so far put a lot of its resources into influencing coal companies. But as you will hear in the interview, the pension fund will now start zooming in more on oil. That's encourging news, and we hope it will make a difference! What is your view on AP7:s investment strategy? Give your opinion in the comment section.

The 'its only the secondary market' argument is flawed. Higher demand for existing shares props up the value of the company, allowing it to issue more shares at a higher price and raise more money for investment.

They're doing it because they feel untouchable. This will plummet the trust people have in them and Thier share capital
