Not a good sign to see that Russian oligarchs and oil billionaires are undermining the effectiveness of COP27 with their covert lobbying despite already being under western sanctions as a result of the war in Ukraine. It's disheartening to see that despite the actionable potential of the COP, there are still so many counterproductive and climate unfriendly players making their presence known at an event dedicated to preserving and saving the planet. As this Guardian articles outlines, it's not just about saving their own multi-billion dollar private businesses, it's an opportunity for many of these oil businessmen to "drum up" new business while sharing spaces with activists and indigenous peoples who have lost much of their livelihoods directly as a result of the fossil fuels these groups are trying to keep on life support! https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/12/russian-oligarchs-and-companies-under-sanctions-are-among-lobbyists-at-cop27

"How can we use technology to improve lives and understaffed communities?" Hazel Akinkyi, Managing Director of VAULTe who are providing infrastructure via the "forgotten mile initiative". This includes providing electricity infrastructure, a vital component of sustainable goals. It's an entirely DIY infrastructure, meaning every community is able to build it out without foreign help, making it far more sustainable and manageable. As she shared on her Dragonfly's Den pitch on We Don't Have Time today (11th of November), Hazel related how they were able to build a new infrastructure with a single community almost entirely independently. The hope is to create a knock-on effect that will allow for other industries, economies, and practices to flourish without forcing these communities to wait for foreign to make this happen!

We Don't Have Time had an amazing Dragonfly's Den entry today (November 11th) from H2YAM, who want to provide engine conversions to professional ship operators, taking them from fossil fuel combustion to H2 combustion and dramatically reducing the CO2 cost of one of the largest, legacy fossil fuel industries around. "Our mission to help maritime communities across the world... establish a sustainable balance with their ecosystems." The shipping industry currently contributes between 3-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet is one of the hardest industries to reduce emissions in. This innovative piece of technological allows for a dramatic reduction in CO2 emissions from this sector without the need for a significant overhaul of its practices. It isn't just for large freighters either, it's for every kind of maritime travel! Great stuff! Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLQgXSGO1KM

We've long not had true receipts or tracing infrastructure to understand whether not our energy is green or not. That could change with Spritju who developed a service platform for energy traceability, increasing the quality of current certificates by 9,000x. "We need to have a clarity of what the source of the energy is that we're using," said Ahman Karnama, founder of Spritju during his pitch for We Don't Have Time's Dragonfly's Den. This service won't just trace green energy, it will trace every kind of energy and where it comes from. This could potentially force businesses to have complete accountability, expose any greenwashing that could be happening, and will hopefully "shift the market towards one where 24/7 carbon free energy is a reality", as the founder said on stage. What a great solution! Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLQgXSGO1KM

Sad to see such a strong deflection of responsibility from one of the world's largest oil and gas companies, directly at COP27 from Sharm El-Sheikh. The CEO claims that people have "no clue" what they're talking about when they blame fossil fuel companies, while these are the same organizations who actively attend events like COP27, not to look for solutions, but to lobby for more subsidization and monetization of their infrastructures. When you look at the record profits that oil businesses have made in the last year alone as a result of the Ukraine road, it's incredibly frustrating to see these businesses glibly taking the moral high ground and acting as if the rest of the world has unrealistic expectations for a net-zero transition - as the planet is burning. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/live/2022/nov/11/cop27-egypt-joe-biden-climate-conference-decarbonisation-live-updates

I think it's high time the companies to be audited in terms of carbon emissions as well as impact on the environment for if such measures are drastically taken for such companies their negative consequences will be minimising as well as the regulatory bodies should also be questioned for allowing such companies to run

All people and entities need to make changes and sacrifices—immediately and drastically. In so doing, we hold one another accountable. This is not blame. This is accountability.

It's fantastic to see that United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres understands how important youth voices are in the climate crisis conversation. From solutions to representation, the young people who will inherit the fallout of the last 70 years of pollution and forerun the solutions that will help us reach net zero, need to be at the table in an official manner. https://twitter.com/cypavilion/status/1590295582949920769?s=46&t=J5aauYa-s3LZpgOUqjJN9w In recent years this has been lacking significantly, with the majority of youth voices disproportionately represented (or platformed) by external activists or independently. Putting an official UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) group to follow negotiations means that our voices have more impact, more weight, and more range. And as we saw on the We Don't Have Time Climate Hub broadcast from Sharm El-Sheikh today, from activists like Xiye Batista, and Ayisha Saddiqa, the youth certainly have a lot to say! So thanks to Antonio Guterres for wanting to create this youth group to follow negotiations and we hope that once formalized, it will create, as he states in his own words, a better mechanism for "interaction".
