⏭️Climate change effects threatens pastoralist communities here in Africa. The last drought that we experienced in Kenya which was the worst drought experienced in 40 years saw so many pastoralists lose their livestock due to lack of water and pasture. ✨In Enonkishu Conservancy, Maasai Mara, they're embracing regenerative grazing to adapt and thrive, proving that sustainable practices can safeguard both livelihoods and landscapes. 🌍🐮 #ClimateResilience #RegenerativeGrazing #WildAboutLife #anitasoina

Just as the flight taxies out on the strip my phone gets an emergency warning; the evacuation has started from the neighbouring areas of the rapidly increasing forestfire. A quick look out the window can confirm the situation; huge clouds of dark smoke are welling out of the nearby mountain side. The darkness fades out to lighter brownish grey further up in the sky, and slowly colours the entire horizon. The look of doom, from spectator flight seats. I went to Athens for work, but is of course sharing this plane with hundreds of tourist pouring in from Scandinavia, USA and Northern Europe. They all came for the sun and warmth, but some are now admittedly escaping the heat by moving their departure date. After five days of 40 degrees celcius, many felt they did not get the pleasant Greek holiday experience they were looking for. And wealthy as they are, tickets can be changed and new plans can be made. A world in crisis, and the way we react to it Talking to fellow passengers gives me a strange feeling that we are all fleeing. Back to our comfortable homes, in our cold countries. Fleeing on a combustion engine gigamachine throwing out more of the problem that made us all get to this point. Accompanied by jokes referencing to the last days of heat, people are smiling and noting the welling smoke. They are sighing and looking forward to the cold, fresh air of the north. With lightness they move on, happy to “get out in time” as one passenger says. A lightness that is almost unbearable, and definitely disgusting. Those who can’t escape There are over a million people in central Athens, many of them with nowhere to flee; like the many in housing with poor ventilation and definitely no air-con. The elderly of these. The animals in the burning forests. The over 120 000 Greeks and many of them Athenians living directly in the streets, scolding in direct sunshine with nowhere else to go. Walking the streets of Athens during a heatwave is a walk of shame. A walk from where the addicts set their first shots in bright daylight, to the wealthy drinking their frozen margaritas before noon is literary 5 minutes long. The path from the cold, damp shopping streets with air welling out of the air-conditioned stores, to the urine-smelling, dusty sidewalks occupied by the many people living in the streets, is lined by careless tourists. Shame, anger & action I am struck by shame and anger, being in this situation - being on this flight. With front row seats to another climate disaster, we zip our coffees and move on. Or, should we say driving seats to the disaster? The only refuge I can find for my own shame is that I was there for work. The difficult, delayed, and increasingly digitally distributed train-lines of Europe has been my way of dealing with the shame for many years. The systems that, at least in the nordics, used to be quite good, is sadly slowly becoming worse do to privatisation of the trainlines. When the market economy is driving our developments, the commons never wins. And lines of iron stretched across the distant areas of the north where people actually live, is never going to be profitable. Politicians are our only hope. But I cannot speak for the others; Would I feel less ashamed if my fellow passengers all noted the welling clouds in the horizon with guilt in their eyes? Would it feel better if we all did not have this lightness? And what can one really do? Give up on advocacy for mobilisation - tax the behaviour After many years in climate advocacy, climate tech and climate finance, I have given up on mobilisation. People will never change their behaviour, even when fleeing from countries stricken by climate crisis, they just book a new flight to another destination. Our only hope is to push policy changes at the European and national levels, through a just price on carbon and end to fossil fuel subsidies — specifically, an end to the tax exemption on kerosene. The kerosene tax was on the way from the EU right before covid, but placed in a drawer to protect the airline companies from bankruptcy. The current tax exemption on flight fuel is in effect a fossil fuel subsidy that disincentivizes a shift to lower carbon modes of transport, especially rail. And is currently one of the reasons our rail lines are falling behind, while flights are increasing by the hour. Our future is in the hands of politicians Their current weakness is the inability to tax the behaviours that is driving the climate crisis, and inability to use their powers to make the fossil fuel companies move towards renewables. Both could be easy if they had followed the polluter-pay principle from the start. Or used the current opportunity for the windfall principle to reallocate funds from record profiting fossil fuel companies in the light of the energy crisis, to the industries that are now struggling to ramp up the immense possibilities of harvesting sun and wind. When people don’t feel shame, even after experiencing the crisis first hand, we have to rely on our politicians to lead us away from the increasing climate chaos. May they be daring, decisive and direct - cause we don’t have time to combat indifference. _______ About Brita: Experienced climate reality leader, European NGO builder and entrepreneur within climate risk tech and climate impact investment. On February 1, the Bureau of Land Management issued an environmental assessment for the Willow project, an oil drilling project in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve. If approved, it would produce approx 180,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The Willow project’s initial plan included 5 drilling sites, which the BLM assessment reduced to 3. The BLM is also considering measures to reduce environmental impact, such as delaying permits and planting trees. ConocoPhillips, the company responsible for the Willow project, applauded the move, saying in a statement, ‘We believe Willow will benefit local communities and enhance American energy security while producing oil in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.’ Environmental activists felt differently, saying the project could potentially ‘undermine the Biden administration’s climate goals.’ Karlin Itchoak, senior regional director for the Arctic region at the Wilderness Society, said in a statement, ‘If this project were to move forward, it would result in the production and burning of at least 30 years of oil at a time when the world needs climate solutions and a transition to clean energy.’ This was made with support from Climate Power. County government of Kajiado (my home county) to insure 20,000 livestock farmers, with support from the World Bank, in a bid to cushion the farmers from the vagaries of prolonged drought. Ten thousand others, who are capable to insure their livestock, will get subsided premiums, Governor Joseph ole Lenku said at a press conference in his office today. The exercise has been clustered into eight zones; Iloodokilani, Kaputiei, Keekonyokie, Kuku, Matapato, Merrueshi, Olgulului and Olkeriai.

UK launches climate finance accelerator Nigeria, calls for proposals British Government-funded CFA Nigeria has opened a call for proposals for the Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) Nigeria programme. CFA Nigeria is a climate finance country platform designed to directly respond to the urgency and scale of the climate crisis in Nigeria, by mobilising finance for the country’s just transition to a resilient, low-carbon economy. Project developers in Nigeria helping to tackle the climate crisis are invited to apply by completing the online application on or before February 17, 2023. Interested project developers must be in pre-feasibility stage and should be seeking investment of at least $1 million with no upper limit. Crowding in private finance at scale is essential to implementing Nigeria’s ambitious climate commitments articulated through Energy Transition Plan and Nationally Determined Contribution. A fraction of the funding necessary for the transition is considered to be available in the market, demonstrating the scale of the challenge and the immense opportunity. British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Ben Llewellyn Jones, said: “I’m delighted that the Climate Finance Accelerator Nigeria is now open for applications from low-carbon projects. The private sector has the potential to play a large part in helping to meet Nigeria’s climate change commitments and I’m excited to see what innovative projects apply. “The CFA has already seen great success globally and in Nigeria and it is fantastic that Nigerian projects will continue to receive bespoke support from technical and financial experts to help increase their chances of securing investment.

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Friday to ban drilling of new oil and gas wells and phase out existing ones over the next 20 years. The vote comes after more than a decade of complaints from city residents that pollution drifting from wells was affecting their health. "Hundreds of thousands of Angelenos have had to raise their kids, go to work, prepare their meals (and) go to neighborhood parks in the shadows of oil and gas production," said Los Angeles City Council president Paul Krekorian, one of the councilmembers who introduced this measure. "The time has come .... when we end oil and gas production in the city of Los Angeles." https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/los-angeles-city-council-votes-to-ban-oil-and-gas-drilling/

In the LA region, there are about 36,000 wells and two drilling rigs (both of which are in shallow state waters offshore), so no rigs in the city limits. This is a good step but as these 36,000 wells age they need to be responsibly shut down. These wells are profitable, so if we would like operators to eliminate the wells and the associated problems that are associated with them, there needs to be an incentive or else the existing wells will produce for decades longer.

Volvo Cars is taking an ethical stand for animal welfare in its fully electric cars. Starting with the new C40 Recharge, all new fully electric Volvo models will be completely leather-free. In coming years, Volvo Cars will launch a completely new family of pure electric cars. By 2030 it aims to offer only fully electric cars – all of them leather-free. As part of its ambitions to go completely leather-free, Volvo Cars is working actively to find high-quality and sustainable sources for many materials currently used in the wider car industry. By 2025, the company is aiming for 25 per cent of the material in new Volvo cars to consist of recycled and bio-based content, as it looks to become a fully circular business by 2040. As part of its climate action plans, it also aims for all of its immediate suppliers, including material suppliers, to use 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025. The company’s move towards leather-free interiors is also driven by a concern about the negative environmental impacts of cattle farming, including deforestation. Livestock is estimated to be responsible for around 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, with the majority coming from cattle farming. Instead of leather interior options, Volvo Cars will offer its customers alternatives such as high-quality sustainable materials made from bio-based and recycled sources. For example, Nordico, a new interior material created by Volvo Cars will consist of textiles made from recycled material such as PET bottles, bio-attributed material from sustainable forests in Sweden and Finland, and corks recycled from the wine industry – setting a new standard for premium interior design. This material will make its debut in the next generation of Volvo models. Volvo Cars will also continue to offer wool blend options from suppliers that are certified to source responsibly, as the company looks to ensure full traceability and animal welfare in its wool supply chain. “Being a progressive car maker means we need to address all areas of sustainability, not just CO2 emissions,” said Stuart Templar, director of global sustainability at Volvo Cars. “Responsible sourcing is an important part of that work, including respect for animal welfare. Going leather-free inside our pure electric cars is a good next step towards addressing this issue.”

I identify as a green politician and in the just concluded general elections in Kenya, I was the youngest candidate for the position of a member of parliament. I ran on a green platform and green agendas topped the list of my agendas. With the tough political environment for youths and Women, I did not give up as I wanted to take the Climate conversation to the corridors of power. We Don't Have Time My name is Anita Soina , a 22 year old passionate Environmentalist and Climate Change advocate from the Maasai community in Kenya. I started actively participating in environment conservation at the age of 18 after learning about SDGs at the age of 17 (in 2017). Without any class background on Environment conservation and with little and sometimes no resources at all I started by doing my little thing which was planting trees and after sometime I founded an organisation called "SpiceWarriors" where we offer climate education in institutions and offer climate training from grassroots upwards . That's our bottom up. We also mentor young children which saw us start an online academy called "SpiceWarriors kids". We also introduced Trees for special days where we organise and encourage members to plant trees during special days like birthdays, weddings, graduations, Valentine's Day etc MY CLIMATE IDEA I Celebrate my birthday on 24th December and at this time most of my friends are usually away for Christmas celebrations and this forces me to organise my birthday tree growing before or after. This year I have decided to do it in a unique way. I will plant trees in 23 homes with 23 fans of mine in 23 counties in Kenya (and beyond if resources allow) between 20th November to 24th December. And we will expand and continue after then as a continuous project. Why am I doing this? I realised that Kenya has had a problem achieving the required minimum tree and forest cover. One of the reasons being ; most individuals have not been involved on a personal level. Imagine if today we visit households , plant fruit trees, indigenous trees and even add those of commercial purposes.. what will happen ? It will encourage them to engage in tree growing and with time they will see the need to have more tree cover. If every individual, institution, household and families attain the required least tree cover of 10% then Kenya will surely surpass that.

Every day new species are discovered across the African continent and Kenya no doubt has many hidden gems. How the land is exploited is important in the conservation of these wildlife habitats. Land excavations for solar panels and even powerlines can completely disrupt ecological environments. Kenya is amongst the countries that are developing their energy strategies to enable more people to use electricity day and night but this should not be at the cost of the environment. Active Kinetic 1 motion energy will be a useful solution that is ready to impact every part of the globe.
