Love this new series, so many inspiring solutions from all around the globe!
According to the IMF, a staggering 7 trillion USD (yes, that is 7 million million) go into fossil fuel subsidies every year. The money needed for the renewable energy transition amount to roughly two thirds of that, 4.5 trillion. In face of a climate crisis threatening civilization with catastrophic and deadly impacts, and ultimately collapse, funding fossil fuels seems like a very bad thing for governments to continue with. Politicians can change this and you can influence them. Here is a practical step-by-step guide on how to do it. Step 1: Shortlist your preferred politicians You’ll need to narrow down the list of people you want to contact. Create a list of politicians whose values you share and whose policy proposals you agree with. Step 2: Check your country’s fossil fuel subsidies The IMF has published this list where you can look up your government’s explicit and implicit fossil fuel subsidies. Look these numbers up and add them together, so that you have a figure representing your government’s total fossil fuel subsidies. Step 3: Create a new email using this template – add information to the [brackets], including your government’s total fossil fuel subsidies Dear [Name of politician], I hope this message finds you well. I’m a supporter of you and I support many of your policies. I’m reaching out about something that is very important to me. With the global consensus at the UN COP28 meeting on the urgency of transitioning away from fossil fuels to mitigate climate change, my concern is the governments’ continued support of the fossil fuel industry. According to the IMF, global fossil fuel subsidies amount to $7 trillion or 7.1 percent of GDP. [Your country of citizenship] is guilty of this too. Our government continues to subsidize the fossil fuel industry amounting to [X billion USD] in implicit and explicit subsidies. You can read the IMF’s latest report on this matter here: https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/WP/Issues/2023/08/22/IMF-Fossil-Fuel-Subsidies-Data-2023-Update-537281 Could you please clarify your position on our government’s subsidies and any plans to abandon them to support the renewable energy transition instead? If I am to continue to support you politicially I must be assured that you are committed to a sustainable future. I will vote and support politicians who does not compromise on this issue, and work tirelessly to remove fossil fuel subsidies. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, [Your Name] Step 4: Send the email to all politicians on your shortlist Final step: Move the money in your bank account! Don’t forget about your savings! If you haven't done so yet, sign up for the #MoveThe Money campaign, and don’t forget to write in how much money you want to move. We will send you our guide on how to move your savings. This has the potential to reduce your footprint in half. So it’s actually the most important action you can take with your money.

In a groundbreaking move, Belgium has seen its first-ever climate action lawsuit against a multinational corporation, TotalEnergies. The case, initiated by Hugues Falys, a cattle farmer from the Hainaut province, highlights the devastating impacts of climate change on individuals and communities and seeks accountability from one of the world's leading fossil fuel giants. Hugues Falys, an advocate for agroecological practices, has experienced firsthand the repercussions of climate change on his farm. Speaking about his decision to take legal action, Falys talked about the tangible toll climate change has taken on his livelihood, including yield losses, increased workload, and the uncertainty it has brought to the agricultural sector. "The Farmer Case", supported by three Belgian NGOs - FIAN, Greenpeace, and the Ligue des droits humains (LDH) - aims not only to seek redress for the damages suffered by Falys but also to hold TotalEnergies accountable for its contribution to climate change. Central to the case is the demand for TotalEnergies to align its operations with the targets outlined in the Paris Agreement, including significant reductions in fossil fuel production and investments in renewable energy. The case asks the court to request TotalEnergies to implement a credible transition plan, which includes a halt to new investments in fossil fuel projects, a 47% reduction in gas and oil production by 2030, and a more stringent 75% reduction by 2040. Fossil fuel giant TotalEnergies has faced criticism for its failure to adequately address climate change despite being aware of its impacts for decades. Matthias Petel, President of the Environmental Justice Commission at the LDH, stressed the importance of court decisions in securing justice for the victims of climate change and ensuring a just transition for future generations. This landmark lawsuit and its outcome have the potential to set a precedent for future climate litigation and drive meaningful action towards climate justice. https://www.thefarmercase.be/ https://climatecasechart.com/non-us-case/hugues-falys-fian-greenpeace-ligue-des-droits-humains-v-totalenergies-the-farmer-case/ https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/belgian-farmer-takes-totalenergies-court-seeking-climate-damages-2024-03-13/ https://www.mediapart.fr/journal/ecologie/130324/climat-un-agriculteur-belge-assigne-totalenergies-en-justice#at_medium=custom7&at_campaign=1047

Hopefully, more people can join this case to make it a class action law suit and to ensure Total Energies are made to pay heavily for their role in harming our planet. This will then set a precedent for future lawsuits against such corporations which will make them rethink their business models.
The way you choose to spend your money impacts the climate and the environment. All your consumer choices have a carbon footprint. According to the UN Gap Report, our lifestyles account for two thirds of global emissions. The good news is that you can drastically reduce your footprint through smart lifestyle changes that still let you enjoy life! Here’s a step-by-step guide. Step 1: Analyze your lifestyle emissions “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest,” as Benjamin Franklin said. So start by mapping out your climate footprint. There are numerous web resources to help you with this. Go to our carbon calculator and take the test! It will tell you which aspects of your lifestyle that give rise to the most carbon dioxide equivalents – and give you practical tips on how to reduce your lifestyle emissions. Step 2: Make changes with a clear impact (and remember, no one is perfect) So, now you have a roadmap that will help you focus on the things in your life that produce the highest relative footprint, which will guide you toward the most efficient way to reduce your footprint by spending your money differently. Does traveling make up most of your footprint? Consider choosing greener alternatives such as train travel or electric cars. If you must fly, choose an airline that offers you to buy biofuel. Do you consume a lot of meat? You don’t need to go all-vegetarian, but mixing up your diet is very efficient. When you do buy meat, choose the most sustainably produced meat available to you. If you’re a fashionista, explore high end second hand shops or consider renting your party outfit. Many times there are better alternatives that emit less with a low added cost while giving you the same satisfaction. And many times the more sustainable option is also the more economical one! What you want is to focus on choices that saves as much emissions as possible. Not to stop enjoying life. The world needs to halve emissions every decade in order to reach net zero by 2025, according to Johan Rockström and other leading climate scientists. This means you need to halve your emissions, too. Remember, you don’t need to be a perfect saint, the important thing is that you take action with a clear impact. Step 3: Choose genuinely green and ambitious brands Move the market with your money by choosing genuinely green brands. Admittedly, this one is a bit tricky since most companies will tell you that their products are green. Look for companies that have sustainable, low-carbon products at the core of their offering and reason to be, which may require reading up a little on the company history and product line. A second tip is to buy from companies that have committed to emissions reductions in line with the Paris agreement’s 1.5° ambition, have clear transition plans, and are members of a third-party global initiative that evaluates such ambitions, like Science-based targets, Exponential Roadmap Initiative, or Race to Zero. A great source of information on how well companies perform on climate issues and how well respected they are is We Don’t Have Time. Come here to look up which companies have received a lot of Climate Love 💚. If you change your spending and consumption pattern, the effect on society is multiplied. You move the market with your money, inspiring others to live more sustainably. Together you create demand for low-carbon products and services, leading to an exponential change. Final step: Move the money in your bank account! Don’t forget about your savings! If you haven't done so yet, sign up for the #MoveThe Money campaign, and don’t forget to write in how much money you want to move. We will send you our guide on how to move your savings. This has the potential to reduce your footprint in half. Small changes add up! Together we can make a difference.
In a historic decision at COP28, the world’s nations finally agreed to transition away from oil, coal and gas. More and more actors are now responding accordingly, putting more pressure on financial institutions to reconsider their fossil fuel investments. This guide is for banks, fund managers, and asset managers who want to future-proof their business – and avoid being stuck with stranded assets. https://youtu.be/h7fsoCIJ9Rs?si=jLD77obNBxPsojr4 At last year’s UN Climate Conference in Dubai, COP28, 197 nations plus the European Union signed an agreement to transition away from fossil fuels and triple their investments in renewables until 2030. It has been known for decades that investing in fossil fuels carries significant climate risk. Now, due to the unanimous decision at COP28, it is obvious that these kinds of investments also carry a growing financial risk. A study published in Nature calculates that global stranded assets as present value of future lost profits in the upstream oil and gas sector will exceed US$1 trillion. More and more companies and individuals are already acting on these risks, moving their money from climate problems to climate solutions. With this transition comes enormous business opportunities. The International Energy Agency (IEA) calculates that $4,5 trillion needs to be invested annually in clean energy by 2030. If you are an asset manager, this is where your future growing markets are to be found. Here is a guide for financial institutions who want to stay relevant and future-proof their businesses. 1. Calculate and compile your investments in – and financing of – oil, coal, and gas. This will help you understand where you have your biggest potential to move your money. 2. Create a realistic transition plan with concrete deadlines and targets. This will send an important signal to potential investors, and will help you keep those investors that would otherwise have moved their money to more sustainable funds. If you can’t get out of some of these investments immediately, don’t worry. Most investors will understand that it will take some time to make the transition in an orderly manner. 3. Develop an investment policy that explicitly states a zero-tolerance stance on new fossil fuel investments. Make sure that the policy also excludes all companies involved in expanding the extraction of oil, coal, or gas. The policy should clarify that any funds divested from fossil fuels are to be reinvested in sustainable, green solutions. If you're unsure about the criteria for an effective policy, consider reaching out to other financial institutions that have already divested in the same market where you operate. Often, they are willing to offer assistance, even to competitors. Collaboration is crucial in addressing the climate crisis. Additionally, good policy examples can frequently be found on various websites. Allow yourself to be inspired and adopt best practices with pride! 4. Join coalitions with other financial institutions that are working for the climate. A few general examples: Net-Zero Banking Alliance. the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANDZ), Science-Based Targets, Exponential Roadmap Initiative and The UN Race To Zero Initiative (via SME Climate Hub if you are a small or medium sized company). Pick those that are relevant for your own operations. 5. Communicate if you have joined coalitions and publish your new policy, both internally and externally. Explain why it is important to Move the Money, and share ideas on how to do it. Show your support. If you haven't done so yet, sign up for the #MoveTheMoney campaign. Thanks for your climate action! https://app.wedonthavetime.org/frontpage/movethemoney Should you have any suggestions for enhancing this guide further, please do not hesitate to contact our Editor via email: markus.lutteman@wedonthavetime.org

Did you know that many companies' biggest carbon emissions are not from their operations but from their savings and financial investments? This guide can help your company reduce its emissions and contribute to reaching its climate targets – with little time invested. Finances are an often overlooked source of emissions for corporations. A company might have done a great job reducing its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, switching to renewable energy, and adopting circular production models. But, its carbon footprint can still be substantial. This is often due to the allocation and investment of funds, and the management of occupational pension funds for its employees. The Carbon Bankroll report shows that the total carbon emissions of some companies in the services and ICT sectors could more than double if emissions from cash holdings in the bank were counted. This is because many big banks around the world continue to invest in fossil fuel companies and provide loans for new fossil fuel exploration or related activities. Moreover, around 6,500 institutional investors hold bonds and shares in coal, oil, and gas companies worth more than US$3 trillion. More likely than not, your company is unknowingly part of this hidden fossil-fuel financing problem. The good news is that this can be fixed, and that fixing it will put you in the frontline. ACTION ONE: GREEN YOUR COMPANY'S CASH HOLDINGS The Greening Cash Action Guide is a science-aligned and step-by-step guidance for business leaders, sustainability managers, board members and employers who want to reduce the emissions from their company’s cash holdings. The guide has been developed by Exponential Roadmap Initiative – co-chaired by Professor Johan Rockström, one of the world's leading climate scientists – in collaboration with the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions’ Race to Zero campaign, Fair Finance Guide, and other expert organizations. https://bit.ly/Greening-Cash-Action-Guide Here are seven key actions, as outlined in the guide: 1. Secure support from the executive management. This is crucial to succeed in greening the company’s cash holdings. 2. Gather bank data. Get your sustainability and finance teams to work together to evaluate your banks’ current emissions, climate policies, and how performance is improving over time. 3. Calculate the carbon footprint of your cash deposits. Follow the guide’s checklist to determine how many tonnes of CO2 your cash is indirectly creating through your banks’ lending and investment practices. 4. Talk to your banks. By urging them to improve, you are sending a powerful market signal and showing them how important it is for you that they help meet global climate goals. 5. Prioritise green cash management. Ask your bank to shift some of the company’s cash into “green” financial cash management products such as green deposits. 6. Move the Money. If your company’s current banks are not taking sufficient climate action, consider moving some or all of your company’s cash to a bank that is. 7. Create and share your plans, targets, and progress. Talk to your business networks about the importance of addressing their cash holdings’ emissions, and the actions they can take. Read the full instructions and get detailed advice on how to Move the Money by downloading the Greening Cash Action Guide. For more info, watch the launch event of Greening Cash here: https://youtu.be/vOskr-dtwz4?t=20303 ACTION TWO: GREEN YOUR EMPLOYEES' PENSION SAVINGS Many of the biggest pension funds around the world are still investing heavily in oil, coal, and gas. But in most cases, there are green options to those funds. Here are four ways to make sure your company’s occupational pension funds are fossil-free. 1. Find out who your pension providers are. Ask your financial department to give you a list of all pension companies receiving monthly payments for your employees’ occupational pension savings. 2. Find out how they invest their money. Search for the companies on We Don’t Have Time and see if other users have given them Climate Warmings ⚠️. Then search for them on Investing in Climate Chaos. If you find them there, look up the figure for “total investments” in oil, coal, and gas. 3. Contact the pension providers. Ask them if they plan to divest from fossil fuels and when. Let them know that you will consider moving your money if they keep investing in oil, coal, or gas or lending money to such operations. If your company has a personal contact, call him or her or book a personal meeting. The second best option is to send an email. By doing so, you make it clear to the pension provider that there is a demand for green alternatives. 4. Communicate to your employees that your company has greened its cash and occupational pension funds, and encourage them to do the same with their private holdings, send them this guide. ACTION THREE: BRAG ABOUT IT OUTSIDE YOUR ORGANIZATION Show your support. If you haven't done so yet, sign up for the #MovetheMoney campaign, and don’t forget to add how much money you want to move. This will be handled anonymously and separated from your other company data. We aim to put more pressure on financial institutions and fossil fuel companies by showing how much money is on the move. When you are done, please share this campaign with others on social media, and let them know how easy it is to make a climate impact with your money. https://wedonthavetime.org/movethemoney Should you have any suggestions for enhancing this guide further, please do not hesitate to contact us via email at markus.lutteman@ https://wedonthavetime.org

To have a step-by-step guide towards green investments is really a great thing to have. Anyone who wants to know anything about investing in green energy, they can refer to this guide. It is so easy to understand with suggestions on what website to visit, etc. Thank you for writing this.
Did you know that your savings and pension funds can make up more than half of your personal carbon footprint? Did you also know that it's easy to do something about it? This guide will help you reduce your own carbon footprint and contribute to society's green transition. It will take you less than an hour – but can have a big climate impact. Individuals who want to reduce their carbon footprint are often skilled at recycling, buying second-hand, changing their eating habits, and switching to more sustainable modes of transport. But, most forget to look at how they keep, save and invest their money. Many financial institutions still invest heavily in the fossil fuel sector, meaning your money might indirectly be supporting these activities. Currently, over 6,500 institutional investors hold bonds and shares in coal, oil, and gas companies worth more than US$3 trillion. Several big banks still invest in fossil fuel companies and/or lend money to new oil and gas exploration. The bank, where we keep our cash, is often the largest single contributor to our carbon footprint. Studies have found that greening your money can be far more powerful than the combined effect of giving up flying, ditching meat, or switching to clean energy. Moving your money can also help create a ripple effect that accelerates the transition to a fossil-free society. Dr. Jonathan Donges, Co-Leader of the FutureLab on Earth Resilience in the Anthropocene, describes these as the triggering ‘positive’ socio-economic tipping points that can accelerate decarbonization. According to his research, one of the ”most rapid” triggers is divestments in the financial markets. The third and most important reason to move your money is that the money is needed to finance the green transition. Some investors still argue that divesting will not change anything since all that happens is that another investor will step in and buy what you just sold. But these arguments miss the point. The International Energy Agency (IEA) calculates that $4,5 trillion needs to be invested annually in clean energy by 2030. If you move $10,000 from the fossil fuel sector to the green sector, that means there is now $10,000 more available to help this sector grow. And, since the clean energy sector is booming while fossil energy is continuously losing market shares, moving your money also increases your chances of getting a good long-term return on your investments. So, time to get started. Grab a cup of coffee, ask your partner or another family member to sit down next to you, flip your laptop open, and follow these steps on how to Move the Money. 1. Where is your money? What bank or other financial institution are you using for your savings or daily needs? Is your money placed in a savings account or invested in stocks or funds? Which ones? And how much? Where do you have your loans and pension savings? If you are employed, try to find out which pension fund provider your company is using and where and how your pension money is invested. Write it all down in this Excel sheet. 2. Is your bank or pension fund still investing in fossil fuels? Search for your bank, pension fund, or other institutional investor on Investing in Climate Chaos. If you find it on the list, look up the figure for “total investments,” and add this number to your Excel sheet. https://investinginclimatechaos.org Another important thing to do is to find out what others think. Search for the companies names on We Don’t Have Time and see if other users have given them Climate Warmings ⚠️. If you find criticism that makes you concerned, make a note of that in the excel sheet as well. 3. Contact your bank or other financial institution. Ask them if they plan to divest from fossil fuels, and when. Let them know that you will consider moving your money if they keep investing in oil, coal or gas or lending money to such operations. If you have a bank contact person, call him or her or book a personal meeting. The second best option is to send an email. By doing so, you make it clear to the financial institution that there is a demand for green alternatives. Most banks have email addresses on their website, often in the “About Us” or “Contact Us” section. If you cannot find it, look for contacts in the “Media” or “Press Contacts” section. Here is a mail template you can use (feel free to modify and translate to your language, pro tip, use ChatGPT); Subject: Inquiry Regarding Fossil Fuel Investments Dear [Bank/Pension Fund Name], I hope this message finds you well. As a long-standing customer of [Bank/Pension Fund Name], I am reaching out to gain insights into our institution's investment strategies, particularly regarding fossil fuels. With the global consensus at the UN COP28 meeting on the urgency of transitioning away from fossil fuels to mitigate climate change, my concern about the destinations of my investments has deepened. It has come to my attention that [Bank/Pension Fund Name] has invested [XXX USD] in the oil, coal, and gas sectors, according to data from investinginclimatechaos .org Could you please clarify [Bank/Pension Fund Name]'s stance on these investments and any plans to divest from these industries in favor of renewable and sustainable solutions? My decision to maintain my financial relationship with [Bank/Pension Fund Name] hinges on the institution's commitment to a sustainable future. Aligning my investments with my environmental values is crucial to me, and I am willing to transfer my funds to an institution that better reflects these priorities if necessary. I await your prompt and detailed response on this matter, hopeful for [Bank/Pension Fund Name]'s proactive steps towards environmental sustainability. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, [Your Name] 4. Move your Money. If your financial institution doesn’t have any credible transition plans, or it seems like they simply don’t care, you should Move the Money. Some of your money might be locked in for a few years, as is often the case with mortgages. Then you just have to wait. But if no such conditions apply, make sure you Move the Money straight away. But where to? Here are a few ideas on how to find out which banks are taking serious climate action. Search on We Don’t Have Time which banks and financial institutions in your area have received a lot of Climate Love 💚. For country-based lists of sustainable banks, Fair Finance International is a good source. Fair Finance is a global network assessing, reporting on, and campaigning for more responsible investment policies and practices by financial institutions. It is active in the following countries and regions: (Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Southern Africa, Sweden, Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam). Don’t hesitate to reach out to Fair Finance and ask for advice if you can’t find the info you’re looking for online. When contacting the new bank, make sure to ask them about their investment policies, to make sure it lives up to its reputation. Tell them that you have chosen them because of their good climate rating, and ask them for help on how to invest your money to maximise its climate impact. If you can’t find the perfect bank or other financial institution, don´t worry. Make a list of the banks you find interesting and contact them to find out more about how they invest their money. This, in itself, creates a big impact and makes banks aware of their customers' demands. 5. Show your support. If you haven't done so yet, sign up for the #MovetheMoney campaign, and don’t forget to add how much money you want to move. This will be handled anonymously and separated from your personal data. Our aim is simply to put more pressure on financial institutions and fossil fuel companies by showing how much money is on the move. Why is Wave Energy – the most abun-dant energy source on earth – not being funded when offshore drilling for oil and gas – a dirty and ending resources – get more funds than needed? The historic narrative is that attempts to har-vest ocean energy has been tried for hun-dreds of years without success. The first wave power patent is from 1799. Despite the worldwide potential of ocean energy, the development has been haphazard and has at times seen some spectacular failures. Governments, energy companies and inves-tors have never given wave energy the nec-essary long-term financial support required to get beyond precommercial trials. The total historic investment towards this marine en-ergy development is for sure less than 10 billion $US worldwide and maybe as low as only half that amount or even less. Drilling and pumping oil from below the ocean, on the other hand, is something that has received enormous investments. It started in small scale in 1896 – when drilling for oil in the Santa Barbara “Summerland Oil Field” began about 150 feet – off the beach in Summerland, California and has since been developed in oceans all over the world, to the degree that just the investments on the Norwegian Continental Shelf [NCS] – which accounts for but a small portion of all off-shore oilfield investments – was over 190 billion $US between 2008 and 2020*. Include operation and exploration cost and the num-ber for the time period reach 332 billion $US. These resent investments were just to keep the much greater investments from the peri-od between 1976 and 2000 to continue pro-duce oil at an ever-decreasing level from an ending resource. The NCS investments may have supplied enough energy to cover the equivalent of the world’s total needs for a few months or may-be a year or two. The forecast for the time from 2021 to 2025 is for another 64 billion $US to be invested on the NCS just to keep up the ever-decreasing output. If the same motto learning by doing, nothing is impossible if enough money is invested – which has been the narrative for the offshore oil industry the past 100 years – had been applied towards marine energy development there would, without a doubt, be technical and financially feasible commercial solutions available to capture the enormous amounts of energy in the ocean waves, today. Success is a mindset, a narrative which has previously been missing in the marine energy industry. Waves4Power is different, they have changed the narrative and proved that Wave Power Works. The WaveEL™ system is now on the verge of going commercial and with some financial backing will be able to supply the world with clean electricity from ocean waves, a resource that will not run out in a few months or a year or two but will con-tinue forever. The ocean is like a very large battery, its waves are recharged every day with over 990 times more energy than all humanity needs. Waves4Power – Power that never ends. Alan Solomon here from southern California. I just watched the "Hollywood and Activism: Insights from Jane Fonda, David Fenton, and Sweta Chakraborty | SXSW 2024" and I am as PISSED OFF as Jane is!! I can hear it in Jane's voice. I can see it in her face. I can feel her energy through my computer monitor. I am glad you have this comment section available. How could you air a video like this without a comment section?? There are many, many people out there that are just as PISSED OFF and passionate about this as I am, but they don't know where to go or where to turn to find the correct avenue to voice their feelings, thoughts and ideas and to help and educate the other millions and millions and millions and millions of people out there. For that last 18 years I have researched and studied our environment, wildlife and stopping climate change. I would love an opportunity to volunteer to train these same people or speak to and educate people, in my community, in the U.S. or globally about the truth, which is what Sweta, Jane and David spoke about in this video. This is a very critical time for human civilization. Our planet, not so much. Our planet will continue on for hundreds of millions of years after mankind. Please let those who want to help and be of service, help and be of service Today. Please contact or email me to discuss this further. Thanks for your time Today. asolomon777@gmail.com

Fantastic that We Don't Have Time is part of this community - to shape the future of EU climate policy and inspire a broader audience to join the cause.
Robert Sabelström was a Swedish entrepreneur who happily flew between continents to catch the best waves. Until he began calculating his own carbon footprint. This is the story of how a world-traveling surfer decided to question his own lifestyle and launch a start-up that has so far helped more than one million households reduce their carbon footprint. ClimateHero was founded in 2018, around the same year as We Don’t Have Time, and the two impact companies joined forces early on. Each member of We Don’t Have Time has a link to the ClimateHero carbon calculator on the profile page, and this has to date resulted in 22 000 tonnes of carbon reduced by the We Don’t Have Time community. During Stockholm Climate Week 2023, Robert Sabelström, the founder of ClimateHero was interviewed after his keynote session and revealed the surprising story of how it all started in a surfers bar in Biarritz. For years Robert has been a keen surfer, and indirectly this is the reason why he founded ClimateHero. Surfing, although not a carbon-intensive sport on its own, turned Robert into a climate villain. The first time he calculated his own carbon footprint, in 2017, he weighed in at almost 20 tons of carbon dioxide per year. ”A large part of my carbon footprint came from air travel. I used to do at least four surf trips a year, where at least one included a distant destination, such as Australia. These trips were an incredibly important part of my lifestyle and I would never have imagined stopping flying, until I tried”, he says. Today Robert surfs almost as many days a year as he used to do, but in colder water. ”When you think about it, it’s really crazy that it would take me almost two decades and countless laps around the world before I discovered how fun surfing can be in Scandinavia. Ok, the water is cold and it is very inconsistent, as it requires a storm to start pumping. But when my passion is accessible via an electric car trip, why would I increase my carbon footprint and jump on a plane?” That first carbon calculation back in 2017 not only made him change his lifestyle. It also sparked a business idea. ”Carbon calculators were not any new invention, several others already existed. But the existing ones were developed by academics and environmental organizations, and they all had a bad user experience and used a tonality of alarmism and shaming. ‘Robert, you live as if we had 4,2 planets’ is for example a final message you receive. That does not work. It does not empower me to start changing my habits.” So Robert decided ClimateHero should do the opposite, and build on positive psychology and nudging to help people initiate a low carbon diet. With ClimateHero’s carbon calculator you can get a good understanding of your carbon footprint in just 5 minutes, by answering a few simple questions. You will then receive feedback on what you’re already doing well, and get personalized tips on how to reduce your footprint further. How to drive exponential impact So far this has been a success on both a personal and business level. Robert himself has reduced his own footprint from 20 tons to around 3 tons (See the fact box below to learn how he did it.) And his company has helped more than 1 million households to calculate and take steps to reduce their footprints. Another benefit with ClimateHero’s approach is that it is possible to measure the impact. The one million households that have so far used ClimateHero, have collectively pledged to reduce their carbon footprint with over 2,2 million tons CO2 per year, which is equivalent to permanently removing 1,5 million cars from our roads. But Robert Sabelström is by no means satisfied. “We are on an exponential growth trajectory and have more or less doubled our user base every year. Our key objective is to continue this growth and influence 100 million households by 2030. As part of our strategy to achieve this goal, we took a significant step in 2023 by assembling a co-founding team with equal representation of women and men in our C-level positions. This move underscores our commitment to diversity and innovation as we drive towards our ambitious objective.”, says Robert Sabelström. Ingmar Rentzhog, founder and CEO of We Don’t Have Time, agrees. The key to success, he says, is influencing climate action in society at an exponential pace. ”If, on a personal level, you can reduce two tons of carbon and then make 10,000 more follow your example, well, there you go. That’s the solution.” As a partner to We Don’t Have Time, ClimateHero has its own Climate Dialogue page on the platform, which it uses to communicate with people from all over the world. ”We Don’t Have Time’s platform is a great tool to gather feedback from our most engaged users”, says Robert Sabelström about the Climate Dialogue service on the We Don’t Have Time platform. Supporting companies Since 2021 ClimateHero has expanded their focus, to also support companies with carbon calculations. And in early 2024 We Don’t Have Time and ClimateHero revealed their plans to join forces on helping companies (b2b) to disclose their climate efforts. After helping companies to calculate and report their carbon emissions, ClimateHero now also supports companies to publish and communicate their environmental efforts in a transparent way on We Don't Have Time. ”We are proud to be able to offer companies an effective and sustainable solution for their climate accounting. Our unique model gives companies ownership of their climate calculations, as well as the opportunity to operate more sustainably, to the benefit of both the climate and the company brand. But in order to drive real change and inspire others to follow, companies also need to communicate their climate progress. Our extended partnership with We Don’t Have Time provides our customers with the perfect solution for this kind of communication,” says Robert Sabelström. Climatehero’s view on Carbon offsetting Carbon offsetting is regularly being criticized for providing a shortcut for companies and individuals to reach reduction goals without actually making efforts to reduce their own emissions. Robert Sabelstöm calls it green-washing when a company pledges to go net-zero in a certain year without reducing their own emissions in accordance with the carbon law. ”The important thing is that carbon offsetting shall never be used to defend the status quo. It should be the third action taken, after first calculating and starting to reduce your carbon footprint. It does not matter if you are an individual, a city, a country or a company. Your obligation is to reduce your carbon footprint according to the ‘carbon law’. That means at least halving emissions every decade, where the first halving by 2030 is the most important.” But he also argues that we can’t wait until 2050 to take full responsibility for the emissions we cannot immediately reduce. ”Instead start already today to contribute financially to solving the climate crisis and ensure you help to phase out at least as much carbon emissions as you cause. In the end, he says, it’s a matter of deciding what kind of person you want to be. ”My question to you is what time do you live in? Are you still part of the fossil-fueled mass consumption society that is causing the planet to collapse? Or have you decided to become part of the solution? If you want to be a part of the solution, then a good first step is to calculate and understand your carbon footprint and then take the first steps to reduce it. My hope is that after you have finished reading this, that you will use ClimateHero and do just that.” Watch Robert Sabelströms keynote at Stockholm Climate Week 2023: https://youtu.be/CpRtb1Lz3oU?t=29730 ABOUT: HOW ROBERT CUT HIS CARBON FOOTPRINT Here's how Robert Sabelström cut his climate footprint from 20 tons per year to 2,5. - Transportation: ”I admit that cutting back on air travel has at times felt self-sacrificing. But the other measures I have taken to reduce my climate footprint have actually only improved my quality of life. Being car-free is one such example. Today I usually get around by bike and am in much better shape. For longer trips, I go by train or use an electric car pool. Not owning a car is amazing. Never again will I change winter tires, clean, administer parking, or care about residual value. I am also looking forward to a future where the cars drive by themselves, so we can skip all parking spaces in the inner city.” - Food: ”I have not gone all the way to plant-based only, but I follow the planetary guidelines that exist around sustainable food consumption, which means that about half of my meals are completely vegetarian. The realization that meat from cows and lambs has 10 times as high a carbon footprint as poultry and fish has also made me treat beef as a luxury item, something I eat at most once a month.” - Waste: ”I have become a proud food waste hunter. Of all food produced, 40% ends up as waste, half of the waste occurs in the manufacturing and distribution stages and half occurs at home in your kitchen. Today it is like a competition for me to throw away as little food as possible. It is above all a question of attitude. To challenge yourself to be proactive in freezing food and be creative enough to run a “residual food party” from time to time. As a parent, my best trick is to start with a smaller portion for myself and then compensate for the fact that my children are not quite as polished in the food waste hunting sport yet.” - Consumption: ”I have completely changed my attitude to consumption. The way we constantly buy new clothes and gadgets is completely unsustainable. It hardly matters if you take responsibility and recycle the products, the biggest environmental damage already occurs in production. Today, I visit the tailor, the bicycle workshop and the electronics workshop, much more often than any store. I get the same “kick” from mending something that I once got from shopping for new stuff, but the feeling goes deeper. Repairing and maintaining what we already have is the first cornerstone of the circular economy. The other is to reuse. Today I usually start my customer journey by looking at 2nd hand sites like Ebay and Facebook Market. Yes, it’s still a little messier to buy used goods than to buy new ones, but it’s much better for both my wallet and the environment. Furthermore, it no longer feels so meaningful to own things at all. Most things can be borrowed, rented or ‘co-owned’. That is the future and it has already begun.”

Despite contributing very little to the climate crisis, women in rural Africa are on the frontline of climate change. And as climate change pushes girls out of schools, and destroys school infrastructure, this vicious cycle accelerates the cycle of poverty. This remarkable women-led initiative is making waves to combat this reality and improve food insecurity and resilience across the continent. CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education) a pan-African nonprofit, is training young women as agricultural guides to champion climate-smart agriculture techniques within their communities. These guides, serving as frontline educators, transmit vital knowledge to farmers, enabling them to adapt to climate change while enhancing crop yields sustainably. The Climate Smart-Agricultural Guides, are supported by CAMFED through their education and possess expertise in sustainable agriculture. Leveraging skills honed during their schooling, including problem-solving and leadership, they integrate this with technical knowledge in the "green economy." Through a cascade model, the young women leaders reach thousands of people in rural Africa with techniques, information and affordable technologies for climate-smart agriculture, combining Indigenous methods with innovation. They prioritise "forgotten farmers", marginalised smallholder farmers, including those in Parent Support Groups, who grow food to keep vulnerable children in school. And have already reached 100,000 community members! Listen to Agriculture Guide, Patience's story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryv1F8KQQqw The impact of this initiative can't be understated. Farmers are adopting multiple climate-smart practices, diversifying crops, conserving water, and enhancing soil quality. And the ripple effects extend beyond agriculture, with communities embracing tree planting initiatives and clean cookstove technologies, furthering environmental stewardship. Challenges persist, including climate change-induced adversities and cultural barriers. But CAMFED is motivated to continue its mission and forge partnerships to confront these issues! Do children grasp the idea of planting trees? Plants, like humans, require a nutrient-rich environment to thrive, yet they also have the unique ability to trap carbon dioxide. Making our soil better helps to strengthen plants, allowing them to absorb more CO2 from the air around them. This give-and-take practice is critical when trying to understand changing weather patterns since it monitors damaging greenhouse gases. The Noella Science Comics and our puppet show are designed to teach kids about the benefits of tree planting and carbon sink. Our Noella EE Program enhances this with games and board games for an immersive learning experience. By supporting our initiatives, you'll help provide vital tools to educate future generations on climate action, fostering a greener future. Noella Science Comics: https://www.infinityeightproductions.com We create engaging science comics tailor-made for children to support climate scientists and raise climate awareness. Please support our work so that we can continue to create these unique materials and programs for children worldwide. AFRICA IS GOING GREEN
We Don’t Have Time has been ranked one of Europe’s fastest-growing companies by the Financial Times. ”A great recognition for us and the whole climate economy,” says Ingmar Rentzhog, CEO and founder of We Don’t Have Time. https://www.ft.com/ft1000-2024 For the eighth consecutive year, the Financial Times has ranked the 1,000 fastest-growing companies in Europe. The FT 1000 ranking, compiled with German research company Statista, showcases those European companies with highest percentage growth in revenues between 2019 to 2022. This year, We Don’t Have Time reached #294 on the FT 1000 list, ranking fourth among media companies in Europe. Ingmar Rentzhog, founder and CEO of We Don’t Have Time, says the ranking is the result of his team's enduring achievements. He believes it sends an important message to those who still don’t believe that working for the climate can be a good business model. ”It is a great recognition for us to be on this list, as there is still a lot of prejudice about being able to make money on saving the planet. The fact is, the climate economy is growing more than many think. That we rank high on this list is both proof that things are going well for us, and that there is a great need to communicate climate solutions.” TOP 5 Media Companies in Europe, Growth Rate (%) 1. The Alliance (UK), +2,935.8% 2. OnlyFans (UK), +2,143.3% 3. Requtech (Sweden), +978.3% 4. We Don’t Have Time (Sweden), +584.6% 5. Master Group (Italy), +439.2% We Don’t Have Time was recently also recognized by Deloitte as one of Sweden’s fastest-growing tech companies in 2023’s Sweden Technology Fast 50. Deloitte’s ranking is based on revenue growth over the last four years and includes all areas of tech. ”It is important for us to keep growing, but like many other growth companies in the green economy, we must also achieve profitability. To do this, we need continuous support from investors”, says Ingmar Rentzhog. ”There is no lack of investment money out there, but too much of that money is still flowing in the wrong direction, supporting the fossil fuel industry instead of funding the green solutions.” This is why We Don’t Have Time has just launched an initiative called Move The Money. The aim is to unite all investors who believe in the power of moving as much money as possible from fossil to green. This includes private investors, angel investors, green funds, banks, hedge funds, venture capital firms, investment companies, and anyone making a living from finance. https://www.wedonthavetime.org/events/stockholmclimateweek#/channel/4316/lfwwwnzvgrrueqzrg54te5tbkrxuwuty The ongoing shift from dirty to clean energy is clearly visible in FT 1000. Raylyst Solar, a Prague-based distributor of solar panels, tops the new ranking, and the boost for renewable energy has made Energy and utilities the fourth best-placed sector, up from sixth place in the previous ranking. According to the Financial Times, ”their rise can be partially attributed to the EU Green Deal, its financing programme to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels, as well as efforts to diversify energy supplies in response to record-high oil and gas prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” Scrolling through the list of the 1,000 fastest-growing companies of 2024, Ingmar Rentzhog is hopeful about what the companies of the future will look like. ”There aren't many companies from the fossil fuel industry on this list. In fact, I didn't find a single one as I scrolled through. Perhaps I missed one, but they appear to be quite rare. It seems they're not where the future growth is occurring”, he says. ABOUT FT 1000 - The FT1000 for 2024 is the eighth annual ranking of Europe’s fastest-growing companies. - The ranking is compiled by Financial Times with German research company Statista. - The companies are listed in order of highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in revenue over the period 2019 to 2022. - For this year’s ranking, a minimum average growth rate of 36.3 per cent has been required for inclusion. - The ranking of the FT 1000 was created through a complex procedure. Although the search was very extensive, the ranking does not claim to be complete, as some companies did not want to make their figures public or did not participate for other reasons. ABOUT WE DON'T HAVE TIME We Don't Have Time is the world's largest media platform for climate action—with a mission to democratize knowledge about climate solutions and inspire and mobilize global action toward a prosperous, fossil-free future. I am incredibly grateful to be working alongside such an amazing team that has achieved these remarkable results. When my co-founder David Olsson and I started 'We Don't Have Time' seven years ago, we were all too often faced with skepticism. Many questioned whether it was even possible to make money by doing something good for the world. Today, it's a given! The journey from those initial doubts to our current success has been extraordinary, and it's a testament to the hard work, dedication, and belief in our mission shared by everyone on the team. To have reached this point, where our impact is both meaningful and a rapidly growing business, fills me with immense pride. It's a clear sign that doing good and doing well can go hand in hand. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey

We are a hybrid between a digital wholesaler and a marketplace where private and public kitchens get the opportunity to buy food directly from the producer's warehouse that would otherwise have risked becoming food waste, but also ordinary products that are sustainably produced. It will be a climate-smart supplement to their regular food procurement, and is completely in line with Sweden's national food strategy to reach the UN's climate goals. Only in Swedish, unfortunately. One tip is to use Google Translate and you get a very interesting business setup. (Picture / Save food /Food that otherwise risks becoming food waste. Congratulations! 💚 Spanning from Senegal to Tanzania, TREES has partnered with hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers, guiding them in the adoption of regenerative agroforestry practices. By embracing the Forest Garden Approach, these farmers have not only revitalized degraded lands but also cultivated sustainable livelihoods. The impact is palpable, with success stories echoing from Kenya to Mali. Paul Magna, a beneficiary of TREES in Kenya, shares his newfound joy: "My life has changed. Birds are chirping, my children are laughing, life is everywhere." Through the initiative's efforts, over 41,000 hectares of land have been restored since 2014, equivalent to the size of Dodoma, Tanzania's capital. With support from the UN Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization, TREES aims to expand its impact, restoring hundreds of thousands of hectares of drylands by 2030 and creating 230,000 jobs across five African countries. This recognition by the UN shows the vital role of grassroots initiatives in achieving global restoration goals. https://www.decadeonrestoration.org/initiative-engaging-farmers-transform-land-across-africa-recognized-one-seven-un-world-restoration

Despite a tumultuous path marked by protests and political dissent, the European Parliament has approved the EU's nature restoration law with 329 votes in favour and 275 against. The legislation, which aims to restore 20% of EU land and maritime areas, faced fierce opposition from a coalition of centre-right, far-right, and national conservative lawmakers. Initially proposed in 2022 to combat the degradation of Europe's ecosystems, the law encountered resistance in 2023, prompting compromises on ambition and timelines. However, after rigorous negotiations, the hollowed-out version of the law secured passage, much to the relief of proponents of environmental conservation. Spanish centre-left lawmaker Cesar Luena, who led negotiations, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing that the Restoration Law is a critical step towards protecting nature. The victory was met with enthusiasm from green lawmakers, with German MEP Michael Bloss hailing it as a blow to conservative forces. However, the law's journey to approval was marred by last-minute opposition orchestrated by the centre-right, citing concerns over bureaucracy and its impact on farmers. Despite co-negotiating the law, EPP chief Manfred Weber criticized its drafting and opposed it on Tuesday. The law sets specific targets for restoring various ecosystems, including pollinator populations, forest ecosystems, and river connectivity. However, concessions were made to address concerns related to agricultural ecosystems, with an "emergency stop" clause allowing for the suspension of targets under exceptional circumstances. The new Nature Restoration is far from perfect, or complete, but the passing of this law is at least symbolic and a way to show the conservative parties that we won't accept their shameful decision of backing out at the last minute! https://www.euractiv.com/section/biodiversity/news/contested-nature-restoration-law-passes-eu-parliament-despite-last-minute-revolt/

Its a great milestone for the EU. I am however alarmed by the level of opposition this law faced. Some people have just buried their heads in the sand on climate issues.

It's so unfortunate that when some people are trying something good for the planet ...others won't rest untill they bring them down..it our responsibility as a whole to stand for what's right.

Before we dig into HOW let’s understand WHY. Well, it turns out that food is actually responsible for around one-third of all global greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions, and reducing this number is one of the biggest and most important challenges we are facing in the world. So by being a little bit picky with what we put on our plate, we can cut all food-related emissions in half! Klimato, as an initiative to calculate food-related GHG emissions, uses Life Cycle Assessment to meticulously track the carbon footprint of ingredients from production to store shelves (farm to industry gate). By working with restaurants and food companies they managed to reduce 8712 tones of CO2 (equates to flying around the earth 1452 times) in 2022. Interested in knowing what your carbon emission is? Tap the link below👇to learn more. Take action now and reduce your carbon emissions by just swapping a few ingredients. https://www.klimato.co/blog/ingredient-swaps-to-reduce-carbon-emissions-from-food

Thank you, Vermeer Xie, for sharing climate love to Klimato! We appreciate that our post sparked discussions on food and sustainability. 💚 Confronting climate change can sometimes make us feel powerless, leading us to question how we, as individuals, can make meaningful contributions. However, simple solutions as opting for more climate-friendly choices in our food consumption ranks among the most impactful climate actions we can take. While there are various food items to consider, the most effective action lies in reducing our consumption of ruminant meats such as beef, lamb, and goat. A positive aspect is that even if you find it challenging to completely give them up – for instance, if you're a fan of beef burgers – you can still make a significant impact by limiting your intake to just one burger every week and a half! Imagine being able to consciously choose low-impact meals while dining at a restaurant by being aware of the carbon footprint of each dish. Would this knowledge influence your food choices?

River dolphins are extraordinary. As apex predators, they are the icons of some of the world’s greatest river systems. But all six remaining species are facing extinction, while a seventh species, the Chinese river dolphin or baiji, was declared extinct in 2007. Since the 1980s, river dolphin populations have plummeted by 73% due to a barrage of threats. The recent deaths of over 150 river dolphins in the Amazon’s drought-ravaged Lake Tefé show that climate change is becoming an increasingly severe threat to their survival. Last year, for the first time, countries are committing to collective action to save river dolphins: the landmark Global Declaration for River Dolphins. This Global Declaration “roadmap” not only created hope for the endangered river dolphins but also for the world’s most important rivers, including the Amazon and Orinoco in South America, which are relied on by indigenous people and local communities in remote areas to the residents of megacities. “Inspiring conservation efforts at local and national levels have yielded some incredible results, but progress is limited and the threats remain vast. This is why the Declaration is vital: we need collective global efforts to ensure the long-term survival of all six river dolphin species,” said Daphne Willems, WWF Lead River Dolphin Rivers initiative. Saving river dolphins requires accelerating efforts to protect and restore their rivers, including some of the greatest and most important rivers on Earth - Amazon, Indus, Ganges, Mekong, Orinoco, Yangtze. The health of these rivers is critical to hundreds of millions of people and extraordinary biodiversity. Protecting and restoring them is also central to climate adaptation since healthy rivers and wetlands can help mitigate the impacts of extreme floods and droughts.
