How can designers use their powers for the benefit of the planet? 🌱 In our blog Planet Centric Designer Carolina Faria shares some ideas, as well as some tips on how to put the ideas into action. Hop in and read. 👇 https://www.vincit.fi/en/empowering-designers-to-become-responsible-agents/ Here are some of our favourite ideas from the workshop: - Push back on "quick fixes" to create longer-lasting solutions - Support change from "competition" to "collaboration" between companies - Make the information about which resources are used for a product or service available to the consumer What do you think about these ideas and our responsibility as designers?

Hi Samuel, thanks for the comment! Open-sourcing projects is a good idea to have a widespread impact. Another one is to invite our competitors to discuss topics that we all have problems solving. For example: - What are our pains to integrate environmental principles across our organisation? - How can we get our clients to value sustainability in projects? - What good practices have we done that worked for us? We have done similar work with the topic of diversity: one of our competitors approached us and other companies to have a discussion & workshop. Whoever was interested to discuss joined. From that first workshop, a sort of alliance was formed between different competitors on tackling diversity issues in our workplaces. Here collaboration happened between internal change-makers ready to take action. There are ways of going about these subjects together that do not feel threatening or involve giving away confidential company information, such as the example above. As long as people share the same intention, a lot of collaboration and sharing can happen.

Thanks for the reply! The keys to success seems to be to 1) connect change makers within every organization and 2) collaborate openly and with clear terms. Will keep this in mind for the future!

Do you have any concrete ideas of how to change "competition" to "collaboration" between companies? This makes me think of how software companies are contributing to open source projects, effectively sharing knowledge and accelerating innovation compared to if every company would have been solving the same set of problems in their own private silos. How could these principles be adopted by a wider range of companies?

DESIGNERS, UNITED https://planetcentricdesign.com/commitment/ The capacity for this planet to sustain life is diminishing rapidly. As designers, we have a responsibility to elevate our craft to the scale of the challenges facing us. That’s why we are calling for a commitment to Design for Sustainability wherever we go. By the end of this decade, we must radically reduce our impact on this planet to avoid catastrophic climate change. For the sake of the thousands of species whose existence is threatened, for the millions of vulnerable people who will be forced from their homes, and for the inspiring beauty that is life on this planet – we cannot fail. Our Planet Centric Design team held the North Star workshop at the Interaction 20 conference in Milan back in February, before COVID-19 became problematic in Europe. The workshop’s aim was to give designers concrete tools on how to navigate from global challenges to concrete actions. The aftermath of the novel coronavirus pandemic has exposed the lack of resilience in many business’ strategies and day-to-day operations. To be better prepared for systemic risks, a mindset of systemic thinking, responsibility and transparency play a pivotal role in designing resilient business strategies for the uncertainties of the future. You have probably heard talk about how design can tackle the big societal challenges we’re facing. But are designers really empowered to do this? And even if they were, do they have the right tools to tackle complex environmental challenges like Climate Change? In this article, Andrew Matias will talk about the reality for most designers and call on the industry to commit to designing for sustainability. Are you ready to transform design? Read it here: https://www.vincit.fi/en/transforming-design-for-the-last-decade/

Thank you for an interesting reading. I agree that designers has a big opportunity to reduce their company carbon footprint. Unfortunately that’s not always in the companies interest. That’s way it’s so important to support green companies.

It would be great if you organised a webinar for organisations who would benefit from your Planet Centric Design Toolkit. You can then record it and make it freely available for anyone to watch on your YouTube channel. This would hopefully increase the number of downloads and therefore increase the reach of your positive impact. Webinars are a great way to introduce people to your products and services and it could mean more organisations use your sustainability toolkit to create more planet friendly products! I think it would also be a great thing to share with students studying Product Design or something similar as it would equip them with planet positive design tools from the start of the career. I'm sure you are already experts in this so for anyone else looking to learn how to run a successful webinar, here is a link to a pretty good article https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/blog/webinar/how-to-organise-a-webinar-ds00/

This is a post to highlight the work of Vincit who have designed and open sourced a freely available toolkit for businesses looking to incorporate sustainability into the core of their projects. The toolkit leads you through a series of questions to ensure sustainability is baked into the core functionality of newly designed products and services. I think this will really help organisations think of sustainability as an essential part of design rather than a side note. I’d highly recommend this toolkit for anyone working to develop a new product or service. You can download the toolkit here https://coolthings.vincit.fi/planet-centric-design-toolkit Thank you Vincit! Has anyone else seen anything like this? If you have, post it as a Climate Love to the relevant company on the platform so others can be inspired.

Businesses need to rethink their design strategy to build sustainable products and services that resonate positively with the modern consumer. The strategy needs to be based on a mindset of responsibility, transparency and systemic thinking. Read our blog post here: https://www.vincit.fi/en/designing-for-an-age-of-transition/

WATCH OUR EARTH DAY "FROM TRAGEDY TO STRATEGY" PANEL DISCUSSION According to the U.N., we must reduce human-caused greenhouse gases by 50% over the next 10 years to avoid catastrophic, irreversible climate change. And even though this year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, emissions and resource use continue to rise. So, as we live through a pandemic, join us to discuss the transformative potential of this unprecedented moment and the strategic opportunities to create desirable, sustainable futures. Among a panel of strategy experts, we aim to provide tools for decision-makers to be more strategic in their initiatives and for citizens looking to push the climate agenda to the next level. WATCH OUR WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY BIODIVERSITY NEXUS EVENT! Full event here: https://planetcentricdesign.com/world-environment-day/ Biodiversity loss is at a rate 1,000 times greater than at any other time in recorded human history. 🌲 A destructive feedback loop between climate change, land-use planning, ocean acidification and the nitrogen cycle is creating unprecedented biodiversity loss. This is the Biodiversity Nexus. Saving species, ours included, means tackling all these challenges head on. 🦑 Considering these challenges that we are facing, we held an event on the World Environment Day on 5th of June, where we brought to you: - Pioneering commitments that are driving environmental action with the City of Lahti, Raisio and Aalto University. - The socio-ecological drivers of biodiversity loss with the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). - An expert panel discussion on the role of tech, citizens and strategy. - Four biodiverse solutions. - Desirable visions for the future with the Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development.

The Planet Centric Design is an advanced model for businesses to use in order to enhance sustainability in their practices and products. This is a great tool that more organizations should use and implement in their organizational structure and planning. I really like to toolkit! However, in the "Sustainability Storytelling" section, I would love for a segment on audience engagement ie concrete tips and guidelines that organizations can use to create engagement for their Planet Centric Designed product/service. Creating engagement for your product and/or service is incremental for businesses to grow and especially in terms of sustainability and climate efforts. Therefore, a broader perspective of why stakeholders engagement is necessary and how to create it would be very interesting to include in the Planet Centric Design.
