https://newsroom.safaricom.co.ke/smart-meters-are-helping-to-track-water-on-the-internet-here-is-how/ Water conservation is a hot concern today. Water conservation may save towns and corporations a lot of money and improve the environment. How important is water conservation for the average homeowner? 1. A planet with 71% water would never have a water shortage, but it does. Over 96% of Earth's water is saltwater, rendering it nearly worthless. Only 1% of Earth's water is usable and accessible. Estimates show that population growth is decreasing freshwater supply according to https://dropconnect.com/water-use-statistics/ 2. In water-rich areas, wasted water affects more than water. Water extraction, transportation, and purification require energy. Wastewater needs treatment. They use fossil fuels. Wastewater affects air, fossil fuels, and carbon footprint. 3. Freshwater irrigation produces 40% of global food. Wastewater starves. 4. People are appreciating healthy ecosystems. Healthy ecosystems regulate water and climate. Water use affects ecosystems. Safaricom PLC has launched a smart water meter technology to address the issue of water wastage, the technology is to help households and organizations monitor their usage and avoid wastage. Also, the technology is to help consumers get accurate accurate water readings, this will help reduce disputes from speculations of estimation of water pricing.

We have partnered with Safaricom in a noble project to adopt and rehabilitate key forests that need reforestation across Kenya. Through the partnership, we aim to plant at least 10m trees as we fight against climate change. As part of this effort, Safaricom will plant 5m trees, with Absa planting another 5m. They were at Kinale Forest where they planted 10,000 trees. Below are photos from the event: C.E.O Safaricom PLC, Environment Cabinet Secretary Hon. Tuya, C.E.O Absa Kenya were present.

Safaricom PLC is Kenya's largest mobile telecommunication provider in Kenya with control of 64.5% of the Kenyan market as of 2020, the organization which offers telephone services, mobile money transfers, consumer electronics, cloud computing & fiber optic services is the first company to have introduced the use of mobile money in Africa in 2007 making it one of most profitable companies in the East Africa Region. The company has distinguished itself as being a great ambassador of climate change through its climate sustainability environment policy, it has outlined various strategies to see that it has reduced its carbon footprints in its operations which are as follows: 1. E-waste management The company acknowledges that only 20% of the e-waste is recycled globally only to leave 40 Million tonnes on the land which is unlawfully sold or burned. The organization has partnered with a waste electrical and electronic equipment center which recycles its electronic waste, this has gone a long way to reducing its carbon footprint. 2. Embracing the use of renewable energy The company has continually explored the use of green solutions in its entire network centers especially the establishment of sustainable power options in contrast to high-carbon innovations. it is testing wind turbines on two of their sites in Turkana. A battery enhancement project is in progress on locales where it has great battery independence and steady, predictable admittance to the public network. At these locales it has suspended the utilization of generators, rather utilizing battery power as a reinforcement. This likewise saves costs caused by site support. 3. Eradicating the use of plastics The company is looking forward to seeing that it becomes plastic-free by getting rid of all the single plastic at their premises and also to reduce the use of plastics in their retail packaging. To achieve this the company has put into place a few measures which are as follows: -The use of single plastics has been abolished in all of their cafeterias - The company is encouraging its employees to carry reusable water bottles. -The company minimized the size of its sim card which has seen it reduce the amount of plastic it would use to produce sim cards by half. This drive has eliminated 2.52 huge loads of plastic from the company, moderated 8.64 huge loads of paper, and saved KSh 46.8 million. 4. Staff carbon footprint calculator In February 2019, it steered an instrument among chosen staff that permits workers to ascertain and survey their own "carbon impression"; for example how much carbon dioxide is delivered into the air because of their singular exercises. This apparatus brings issues to light and energizes individual and aggregate liability in diminishing fossil fuel byproducts. https://www.safaricom.co.ke/sustainabilityreport_2019/our-material-topics/environmental-stewardship/

Personally I love their journey and contribution toward environment in various ways, including tree planting activities, etc But what's more important is the lessons they are teaching us that Sustainability remains a journey, if not a destination and the importance of working towards that goal every single day.... And during their journey they have learnt the importance of carrying others along the journey for a common purpose. As same as we do @wedonthavetime platform.
