At Real Ice we are aiming to prove that it is possible to restore & preserve Arctic sea ice at scale. By mimicking natural ice growth processes in our design we plan to accelerate Arctic sea ice generation during the winter months resulting in fewer areas of the Arctic melting completely in the summer months. Our approach involves flooding the sea ice with sea water at the beginning of winter, to create an extra layer of sea ice and remove the insulating snow layer, and re-creating the snow layer at the end of winter, to protect the sea ice from solar radiation, so we can expect it to last longer through the summer months, all using renewable energy sources.
