Great presentation!
Most welcome to listen to interview and presentation of our 500+kW wave energy converter NoviOcean at the OEEC conference in Amsterdam. Why should you take the time? There is a huge four-fold problem, … and solution: 1) We are emitting more and more CO2 since 2015, the Paris agreement. 2) Even if we ten-double the amount of wind-and sun power, 40% of the hours of the month there is minimum wind and no sun. 3) When there is an abundance of wind or sun in Europe, mostly at the same time, the spot price and profitability of these sources are extremely low, even sometimes going negative. When wind and sun provides little / zero, the spot price is high and consequently the huge profits goes to CO2 emitting energy sources, and to the high cost of the climate and the consumers. 4) Energy insecurity and dependency a rising issue. If you would be interested in learning how we can adress all these challenges, and opportunities, with one solution, in a giant coming market not fully understood at present, most welcome to check the video and link. If that spurs your interest, welcome to suggest a slot or two for an intro talk. Video: https://lnkd.in/dzJ9hvvD Our transparent document page: https://lnkd.in/d7GwZYGq

Wave power is very important to develop💚
ABOUT US: Novige AB is a cleantech company based in Sweden that is in the process of developing and commercializing NoviOcean, a breakthrough wave energy converter (WEC) concept. "Saving the climate with profitable wave power" is our goal and driving motivation. Novige’s long-term vision is to contribute to the reduction of fossil fuels in the energy sector on a global scale. OUR MISSION AND STRATEGIES: 1- We offer an innovative device aimed to harvest renewable energy from ocean waves in a cost-efficient and sustainable way. 2- We unlock highly competitive electricity prices never seen before in the ocean energy sector while offering reliability, security of supply, and high versatility. 3- We explore new hybrid generation alternatives such as on-site hydrogen production and/or solar PV additions and onboard battery/supercapacitor storage to our solution in order to create synergies and maximize the output. 4- We produce cheap electricity during peak demand hours and hydrogen when demand is low. The converted energy, phase-shifted from wind power will have a stabilizing effect on the renewable energy supply. 5- We facilitate scalability and global market penetration through an affordable global licensing strategy to make the necessary impact for the reduction of GHG emissions. OUR TARGETS: Novige’s target for 2030 is to reach 100 MW cumulative NoviOcean WEC deployments globally. Calculations show that by 2030, NoviOcean’s LCOE would have reached 54 €/MWh on average, half of the set target by Ocean Energy Europe under the high growth scenario (110 €/MWh). With the right support, Novige aims to reach a minimum global cumulative deployed capacity of 4 GW by 2050 for the NoviOcean WEC (10% of the target set by the European Commission). That level of deployment is enough to help the technology reach the LCOE of 28 €/MWh on average, at the same level compared to onshore wind and solar in 2050, and approximately 60% of the cost expected for offshore wind. According to our estimations, this target roughly amounts to 12 € Billion in sales.

Novige’s pitch: Our goal is “Saving the climate with profitable wave power” with our wave energy converter concept, NoviOcean, which extracts renewable electricity from ocean waves. NoviOcean is unique due to the use of a few, simple, light, and strong subsystems that have been well-proven in other industries (e.g., hydropower) for centuries. We call it the “inverted hydro power plant at sea”, with the ocean acting as a never-drying dam. Moreover, NoviOcean utilizes a rectangular float (as opposed to circular) which significantly improves the lifting capacity by a factor of 4-10 vs. the competition. All the above enable it to produce stable electricity, at a lower cost compared to other marine energy concepts.

There is an humongous amount of ocean waves and energy to capture. Using hydraulics and going vertical is brilliant. Best of luck with your solution. We say “when the ocean breathes - we breathe” Now it’s time to add “When the Ocean moves - we move”

@edwin_wangombe , Thanks for the enthusiasm. Yes, Africa is certainly on our chart. As the waves as lower but stable and long from Senegal to Congo, most wave energy concepts will deliver very small outputs in these coastlines. A bit technical but due to our non-resonant behavior, as opposed to the more common resonant concepts, plus the fact that we easily can mount a larger float for these areas, we can still extract high outputs even these areas. This is would be a challenge for most other solutions. See you in some years, cast a vote first:-) //Jan

I am very excited for your solution viability and proven output! We need to leverage our Ocean and wave energy to even out the very un-even energy production from sun and wind. If the wave energy platform becomes solid enough we will be able to move away from fossil fuels. With sun and wind only, that will not be possible. Bravo- you have my vote 👊🏻💥💦🌱Only question is how can you speed up production and deployment? We need this now and not 2050.

Big thanks Susanne, much appreciated, and happy that one with your immense background are among those that early on see the importance of this product. To your question; Other developers just now deploying full scales in the ocean, have consumed ten times or more than we need to spend, and we will achieve more than double their average output. This present budget will mean three years from now until we are in the sea. The Chinese built a giant Covid hospital in three weeks... How? Lots of money and manpower! We could move much much faster given a larger budget! 1) I see filantropists for instance advocating gladly how they donate billions, to other foundations...., not to the ones that need the cash the most, companies like us that do the work. So, if any reader has connections to these big pockets, and they honestly want real action, most welcome to connect us! 2) Otherwise, traditional investors that want to see rapid change to the best of the climate, combined with making perhaps their best investment ever, welcome to be in contact and scrutinize our numbers. 3) Large utilities, oil & gas companies, industries and shipyards with a global network, are also win-wins. They normally want to sit on the fence and wait to see concepts proven in full scale. A few more forward thinking are now investigating more, and evaluating us and others. Why? Because we will have one, maximum two larger global partners. They will be able to deploy primarily in their own markets for years, possible having the best solution for stable clean energy for decades to come. For the others who "saved" 5-10 million, actually pocket money for most, they will have to wait 10-15 years before getting access to our solution, as we will be busy with the first parter(s). So, save that expense, and possibly loose out on the very best greenifying solution that marketing cannot buy, plus a billion dollar market, or scrutinize what we do, then decide. The choice is yours, now, not in two years. Long answer, but needed to show the reality and importance in this!!

DEPLOYED 1:5 SCALE AGAIN FOR MORE OFFSHORE TESTING. "NOVIOCEAN, THE HERCULES OF OCEAN ENERGY" ・Deployed in March again in the Stockholm archipelago. A very nice day, both weather-wise as well as to be able to run for the next ten weeks in a real sea environment. Earlier we have tested in wave tanks in UK and France, plus numerous hours in our test rig at KTH University. Now with fully remote control as well as having fine tuned the system for more astonishing results ・Why #wavepower? #Baseload about 2.5 times higher than wind, 4 times higher when combined, meaning less gaps to fill with #fossils when wind is low or at night = #energyindependence and #energysecurity, no land area used, not visually obstructing, no audible disturbance, closer to land, not harming animal life & works at night. What could be better? ・Why NoviOcean? We are now simultaneously developing our 500 kW unit, CF 50%, later 2+MW. Lifting 600 tons, multiple times more than any other, consisting of three well proven parts; a rectangular float resembling the wave, a hydraulic cylinder and a hydro power plant running a Pelton turbine, just inverted, simple as that, triple #patented. ・In our opinion, to succeed with wave power you need to use buoyancy, lift hundreds of tons, be non-resonant, use hydraulics and a water turbine, water to metal, not metal to metal. ・Cost of energy well below 200 EUR/MWh after five units, below 125 after 15 units, then lower by learning curve and soon below floating wind, then lower... We know our numbers might surprise. If we show to be right, there are absolutely no limits, for the #climate as well as for tens of #billions in turn over, for decades. The #greenifying effect better than any marketing can buy! ・Looking primarily for discussions with large #utilities, #oilandgas companies and larger #shipyards for joint #development / #partnering / #license #production. ・#oceanenergy in general and perhaps NoviOcean in specific, may be "THE DAWN OF A NEW ENERGY ERA". Happy to send more info and discuss. ・Welcome to check https://lnkd.in/emAvs7fN plus https://noviocean.energy/ for the solution and https://lnkd.in/e6eiiqJg for the potential #renewableenergy #oceanenergy #hydrogen #climatetech #climatefinance

INTRO TO THE NOVIOCEAN WAVE ENERGY CONVERTER NoviOcean "The Hercules of ocean energy", a 500 kW WEC is developed by Novige AB, Swedish cleantech startup company. It is essentially an inverted Hydropower Plant At Sea (HPAS concept). The rectangular float’s heaving motion will create 600 tons of lifting force in every 4-meter wave. This force is transferred through a water-filled hydraulic cylinder to a standard Pelton turbine, driving a generator on the same axis. NoviOcean uses simple, light-weighted, and well-proven parts allowing for a reliable and stable electricity output leading to a low cost of electricity. “Saving the climate with profitable wave power” is our mission which we intend to achieve via global partnerships and licensing to facilitate local manufacturing/operation using readily available local resources. The concept has been developed over the last six years, in collaboration with three universities and more than 50 MSc and PhD students. The company has been awarded in total 800 k EUR from the Swedish Energy Agency and Vinnova, as well as 2.1 million EUR from EU LIFE CCM, and so far with 100% ownership to the founder. The latter is planned to cover 50% of the cost for design, construction, and deployment of our first 500-kW pilot unit. The low cost can be explained by relatively low weight and simple well proven parts. At the end of 2019, the first 1:5 scale prototype (called NO1) was deployment in offshore environment, all functioning directly from start and for six weeks. Thereafter, the unit was reinstalled at the KTH dry-test rig for further testing and improvements based on lessons learned. In the spring of 2020, two weeks of wave tank testing at COAST Laboratory, Plymouth, UK, was performed. All main tests were successful, and we could confirm the simulations made by WavEC in 2018/19 regarding performance and forces. One important takeaway being that the destructive surge forces showed to be only 1/20’th of the lifting forces, again confirming the simulations. A check valve had damage when opened after return to Sweden, then replaced with a more solid version. From fall of 2021 until summer of 2021 more adjustments and improvements to both the test rig as well as our unit had been implemented. This consisted of amongst others new safety valves and new improved control software. Summer of 2021 was devoted to testing at ECN’s LHEEA wave tank facility in Nantes, France, now with a considerably larger float, capable of lifting 1000 kg. We had a few issues with the tank floor connection but otherwise the numerical models were validated once more. After more test rig runs, further adjustments to the software as well as having full remote control and data collection, the prototype was deployed again offshore in March 2022, aiming for ten weeks of testing in the Stockholm archipelago. While working on the prototype, the Novige team simultaneously proceeds with design work on the full-scale pilot unit. This unit is expected to have a 50% capacity factor in a medium location like the Portuguese coast. Some very promising wave technologies are now being tested, both to capture energy from the ~circular water-particle motions in deepwater waves or the to-and-fro motions in nearshore waves. The prospect of combining marine wind and wave power is very exciting!

Hi Alayne Thanks for commenting. We have done calculations at KTH University versus the possible energy absorption from particles vs buoyance. The findings conclude that even if particles of course have some force, the area needed by an object in the water, needs to be 40 x larger than by using buoyancy. We are well aware of the many concepts focusing on this, but in our opinion the odds of succeeding both economically as well as with a fair carbon payback time is slim. The reason is simply the high amount of steel or composites needed to extract the needed output. To compare with our lifting force or 600 tons in a three-meter wave, the calculations show one needs 10 000 sqm, or if you like, 1 000 x 10 meters of a "plate in the water" to match this in deep sea waves. Near shore at best 250 x 10 meters, plus all the actuators needed. In other words, the expense and weight of material will make this a very difficult task, to put it nicely. Others mostly use round buoys. The diameter can not exceed about 10-11 meters, as the 40-meter wave lengths of smaller waves will be cut/compromised. Then with a lifting force of max 150 tons. We use a rectangular large patented float, thereby lifting four times more. The advantage being 3-4 times more lifting force and less units, meaning lower CAPEX and OPEX. Down the line we can go to 15 x the round buoys lifting force by using larger floats, meaning up to 5 MW of rated power with 50% CF. Then comes the conversion of energy. If one is to lift 600 tons or more, 10 000 times per day, with cog wheels, accumulators, wires or chains, the weight and costs will be enormous. We use the well proven hydraulic cylinder instead, easily taking the load. Converting the slow wave motion to 1000 generator RPM is done by the well proven hydro power plant, simply a Pelton turbine with the generator on the same axis. Basically impossible with the mentioned other components. (Think about the braking system in your car, with the hydraulic cylinder by the wheel, taking hundreds of kilos to stop your car. Cog wheels and wires were used in 1890, not anymore...) In total the benefits of NoviOcean is a very light, cost effective concept, based on well proven parts. This was to give some hope to you as well as other readers wanting to learn more about how to achieve stable renewable energy from the largest untapped source in the world, the oceans. Unfortunately intermittent wind-and solar can not alone achieve the 2050 goals, as the surrounding grids and storage systems will grow exponentially with the planned ten-fold increase in deployments. The carbon payback time will be close to the lifetime... //Jan Skjoldhammer

Novige's goal is “Saving the climate with profitable wave power” and they intend to achieve it via NoviOcean, an innovative patented wave energy converter (WEC). NoviOcean is comprised of few, simple, light, strong and well-proven components, resembling an “inverted hydro power plant at sea” (HPAS concept) with the ocean being the never-drying dam. The rectangular float (as opposed to circular) enables automatic alignment towards incoming waves while significantly improving the lifting capacity by a factor of 4-10 compared to the competitors. All the above enables us to produce stable electricity, even during harsh weathers, at an LCOE level comparable to offshore wind directly from the start.

RESULTS FROM WAVE TANK TESTING IN FRANCE: We are pleased to announce that after two weeks of intensive testing in Europes largest wave tank in Nantes, our 1-5 scale NoviOcean wave power device confirmed our third-party simulations to the point. According IPCC chapter six, wave power alone has the theoretical potential to deliver more than the total global electricity demand, thereby mitigating the climate crisis on a big scale. If you think this is important, most welcome to cast a vote for us in the Startup4impact challenge, as a win will propel us faster towards our goal, "Saving the climate with profitable wave power".
