Two tourists visiting the Magallanes National Reserve captured the first images of a huemul, a species of deer that is endemic to Chile and Argentina. This sighting is of great significance as no visual records of the animal had been reported in the reserve's 91-year history. The tourists took photos and a video of a juvenile specimen standing on a trail. In 2021, the administrator of the Magallanes National Reserve, Marcelo Martínez, found some tracks and feces of the huemul in the Las Minas river area, indicating their presence in the reserve. The deputy regional director of the National Forest Corporation (CONAF), Mauricio Ruiz, stated that this first audiovisual record of the huemul in the reserve emphasizes the need to strengthen conservation policies and measures in the area. The huemul population and distribution range have significantly declined, with no more than 2,500 individuals estimated to be present in Chile and Argentina. These individuals are distributed in small subpopulations from Chillán to the Brunswick Peninsula in Magallanes, the southernmost region of Chile. The decline in their population is primarily due to the fragmentation and modification of their habitat, hunting, and the introduction of livestock and exotic species. Consequently, the huemul is considered the most threatened deer species in the Neotropics and is categorized as endangered. The huemul has been protected by Hunting Law No. 19.473 since 1929. In June 2006, it was declared a Natural Monument by the Ministry of Agriculture in Chile. The recent sighting of the huemul highlights the importance of conserving species and habitats to ensure their survival in the future.
