Solar collectors from Absolicon concentrate sunlight into heat and steam for industries and district heating. Breweries, textile industries, dairies, and pharmaceutical industries use large amounts of steam to produce their goods. Instead of producing the heat by burning fossil fuels, this heat can now come from the sun without any CO2 emissions. Our solar heat collectors are part of the solution to a clean energy system. Of the total energy that the world uses every year, around 50% takes the form of heat, with industrial processes alone accounting for half of the total heat energy consumption. Today, these processes are powered mostly by fossil fuels, so just imagine the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions if we were to transform them all to being powered by solar heat. Our solar heat collectors can produce heat up to a temperature that could cover 40% of our industrial heat consumption, representing 10% of the global energy consumption. The energy agency IRENA predicts that we need 1272 million m2 (890 TWh) of solar thermal in industries by 2030 to reach the 1,5°C goal. Over 10% of all renewable heat in industry will come from solar thermal. The collectors capture and magnify the heat from the sun through reflectors. The heat can then be used to create steam, or is sent directly into industrial processes like boiling or pasteurization. The benefit of capturing heat in this way, in contrast to having photovoltaic panels that produce electricity, is that there is no need to convert the energy from one form to another - the energy is captured as heat and used as heat. This means that there is very little energy loss in the transition - our solar collectors capture 76% of the direct solar radiation, where photovoltaic panels are able to capture only 20%. The solar heat collector is a tested technology being used today in various industries to produce fossil-free heat for everything from district heating to electricity and household chemicals. The variety of applications is one of the reasons why the solar heat collector is a crucial technology for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels in the future. Previously, we have mentioned how the Absolicon solar heat collector can produce heat up to 160°C. This may raise some questions; what can we really do with those kinds of temperatures? The uplifting answer is that we can do a surprising amount! Already today, we have implemented solar heat in a number of industries, and we are working on demonstration plants that will show the potential for solar heat in even more sectors. Pre-heating fluids for Iberafrica energy plants in Kenya It may be a surprise to hear that energy plants need heat to function. Iberafrica, one of the leading power providers in Kenya, recently installed a solar heat installation to provide this heat, instead of using fossil fuel generators that run on diesel or gas. This makes them more climate-friendly and more financially viable. With unreliable energy grids and increasing energy prices, going for a decentralized and independent energy solution is a great way to future-proof your heat supply. Providing heat for Colgate-Palmolive factories in Greece In Athens, Greece, Colgate-Palmolive has invested in a two-phase installation of solar heat collectors to provide heat to their production of fabric softener. The installation now spans 264 m2 and provides zero-emission heating for 70% of the daytime operations at the factory. A heat recovery system was also implemented to reuse heat from the fabric softener reactor, which reduced the energy demand for cooling the reactor by 50% and provided heat to the rest of the building equal to 50% of the heat demand. Swedish Absolicon’s solar thermal collectors will be manufactured by partner Creative Power Solutions in Egypt. One of the CPS projects is to make a 14,000 m2 solar thermal park that will be built from the new production line. – The sale of a production line to Egypt is an important milestone for Absolicon and it is gratifying to be able to show the result of goal-oriented and hard work! During the UN climate conference COP27, Absolicon participated in the COP27 Climate Hub, an on-site and digital broadcast hosted by We Don’t Have Time from Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. Joakim Byström, CEO of Absolicon Solar Collector AB joined the broadcast from the Swedish hub at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, to talk about solar heat collectors as a clean energy solution. To decarbonize our industrial processes, we need a substantial supply of clean energy to mitigate the climate crisis and meet our increasing energy demand in an affordable way, as has been made even clearer by the war in Ukraine. But what is often overlooked in the clean energy discussion is that half of the energy that is used across the world takes the form of heat, and 90% of the natural gas that Europe imports from Russia go into providing heat to our buildings and industries. The potential for change here is enormous. Absolicon has the solution to this problem. By using solar heat collectors, or parabolic troughs, to harness heat energy from the sun, we can convert 76% of the energy from the sun directly into heat power which can then be stored and used in everything from clothing production to food and beverage industries. This technology is being demonstrated in pilot plants worldwide and the technology can be produced rapidly to be deployed at scale. “Our product is the robotized production line that can mass produce solar collectors. This robotized production line can make one parabolic trough every 6 minutes. Sweden’s largest solar collector field has started producing heat. When the project is finished, the area of the solar collectors, provided by Absolicon, will cover 3 000 m2 and supply 1.5 MW worth of heat between 73 and 120 °C. In October 2020, we began the process of building the solar field at Högslätten in the town of Härnösand, Sweden, the first large-scale solar heat project for Swedish district heating in 20 years. The first phase was finished in September 2021, meaning that the field now has around 1000 m2 of active solar collectors producing heat for buildings in the area. Solar fields such as this can produce large amounts of heat efficiently without burning any fossil fuels. The energy goes right into the district heating system as heat, which means that no energy is lost by converting from electricity into heat, an issue that other renewable energy sources may face. As part of this first phase, the solar field is also a demonstration facility where people from all over the world can come to study the possibilities of using concentrated solar energy for heating purposes. This makes the potential impact of this plant much higher by communicating the benefits of solar heat and educating people in parts of the world where the energy grid is much more fossil dependent than the Swedish one. The plant is expected to be operating at full effect in 2023.
