Renewable Energy Credits may not be reducing emissions.

Given the new research published where the emissions reporting of 115 companies with approved science-based targets were examined Science Based Targets should review the impact of the targets companies have made and assess them accordingly to account for the real combined emissions reductions. Targets and progress should reflect the actual emissions reductions achieved. We must improve and not rely on a flawed system. “From 2015 to 2019, the 115 reported a 31 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from purchased energy. However, 89 per cent of the companies claimed emissions reductions through certificates. In fact, two-thirds of the claimed emissions reductions were from certificates that most likely did not lead to additional renewable energy or emission reductions. The real combined emissions reduction was closer to 10 per cent, which would barely align with limiting global temperatures to well below 2C.” https://theconversation.com/most-companies-buying-renewable-energy-certificates-arent-actually-reducing-emissions-183176
