Dominica's ambitious path to climate resilience

In the heart of the Caribbean, Dominica is particularly vulnerable to the devastating impacts of climate change. But the island nation has embarked on an ambitious journey to tackle this existential threat and to become the world's first climate-resilient nation. The country is implementing a comprehensive plan that encompasses various sectors to adapt to climate change.

Dominica recognises the importance of preparedness and timely response to extreme weather events. The establishment of an early warning system plays a pivotal role in safeguarding its population. Combining modern methods like radio bulletins and smartphone alerts with traditional communication using conch shells, the system ensures that residents receive crucial warnings in advance. Moreover, the Climate Resilience Execution Agency of Dominica (Cread) has been focusing on disaster risk management, assessing vulnerability, and providing targeted support to communities at risk.
Dominica is investing in resilient infrastructure to withstand the impacts of climate change. Coastal communities are protected through the construction of sea and river walls, reducing the risk of flooding. Healthcare facilities are being fortified to ensure they remain functional during extreme weather events. The country has also revised its building code, ensuring that only structures capable of withstanding natural disasters are approved for construction. By adhering to these building standards, Dominica limits damage and enhances overall resilience.

On top of that, Dominica understands the critical role of ecosystems in climate resilience. Efforts are underway to restore mangroves, coral reefs, and other natural habitats, which act as natural buffers against storm surges and enhance resilience to climate impacts.
Dominica actively engages in international climate change negotiations, seeking financial and technical support to achieve its climate resilience goals. The Caribbean island understands that international cooperation is key to addressing the global nature of climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for Dominica and other vulnerable nations.

The protection of ecosystems, erection of sea defences and building resilience in infrastructure are all part of a mission to protect lives and livelihoods.
