Kenyan President Ruto calls for worldwide cooperation to drive green investments and renewable energy targets.

At the Italy-Africa Summit, Kenyan President William Ruto praised Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's pragmatic approach and expressed gratitude for Italy's Mattei Plan, particularly its focus on energy security for Africa and the Mediterranean. As Chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), Ruto emphasized the importance of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
He highlighted Kenya's pledge to increase renewable energy capacity from 3 GW to 100 GW by 2050, and called for mutually beneficial partnerships to address the challenge of 600 million Africans lacking access to electricity and 1 billion lacking access to clean cooking. Ruto invited Italy to participate in initiatives like the Africa Green Industrialization Initiative and the upcoming Investment Forum co-hosted with IRENA, noting Africa's abundant renewable resources and critical mineral deposits as opportunities for collaboration. Addressing debt issues, he requested Italy's support during its G7 Presidency and emphasized the need for reform to the Global Financial Architecture.
The President's remarks underscore the critical importance of global cooperation and investment in renewable energy infrastructure to drive sustainable development and energy access across Africa. Achieving these ambitious goals will require coordinated action and commitment from international partners.

While President Ruto's call for global cooperation and investment in renewable energy is commendable, it's crucial that his words are backed by concrete actions and policies within Kenya to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and address energy access challenges domestically.

@zelda_ninga_442 I see the only way to do this, make our planet better and take care of our people is by actually working towards these goals instead of continuous summits where we talk about the same issues while making no meaningful change to achieve the set targets.

@rashid_kamau Absolutely, it is why a cooperation treaty with agreed upon targets is imperative in our next #COP to ensure we have a plan on how to achieve sustainability together as it only works if we all do it.
