In a significant and rapid transformation, wind and solar energy have for the first time overtaken fossil fuels in the EU’s electricity mix during the first half of this year. This marks a historic shift in the EU’s power sector:
• 🌬️ Wind and ☀️ solar energy now account for 30% of the total electricity mix.
• 🌊 When combined with hydro, renewables reach a milestone of 50%.
• ⚛️ Including nuclear power, fossil free sources now make up a substantial 73% of the EU’s energy mix.
As a result, fossil fuels have been reduced to a mere 27% share—an all-time low. This decline in fossil fuel dependency is even more impressive given the recent rebound in electricity demand. The growth in wind and solar not only kept pace but exceeded the increase in demand, while hydro power saw a recovery after two years of drought.
Compared to the same period in 2023:
• 🏭 Coal consumption dropped by 24%.
• ⛽ Gas usage fell by 14%.
• 🌞 Solar power surged by 20%.
• 🌬️ Wind power increased by 9.5%.
This is promising news for the climate. Since 2017, emissions from the EU’s power sector have decreased by 44%. The decline since 2022 alone is a staggering 31%—even surpassing the reduction seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This transition reflects a concerted effort by EU member states to reduce reliance on polluting energy sources and meet climate goals, especially following the energy crisis triggered by the Ukraine conflict. https://mapquestdirectionss.io
