DNV Backs Atlas Renewable Energy's $289M Financing for 800 MWh BESS Project in Chile

DNV has aided Atlas Renewable Energy in securing $289 million in financing for its inaugural standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Chile. This funding, supported by senior loans and credit lines from BNP Paribas and Crédit Agricole CIB, will facilitate the development of the Battery Energy Storage System del Desierto, which boasts an 800 MWh capacity. The project aims to enhance the stability of Chile’s energy grid and mitigate renewable energy curtailment, contributing an estimated 280 GWh of electricity annually. DNV's role included conducting market due diligence and risk assessments, which were instrumental in attracting investment from global financial institutions.

Chile is emerging as a leader in Latin America's green energy transition, capitalizing on the Atacama Desert's exceptional solar potential. With wind and solar energy now meeting approximately 33% of the country's electricity demand, the focus is on developing additional energy storage solutions to address the intermittency of renewable sources. This strategic shift not only supports Chile's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 but also positions the country to export solar technologies and storage systems by 2035.
