The warming of France could reach +3.8°C by the end of the century, according to recent modeling based on a probable scenario of greenhouse gas emissions. These new projections are the result of joint work by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Météo-France, and the European Center for Research and Advanced Training in Scientific Computing (Cerfacs). The researchers combined the models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with data collected by some thirty weather stations in France since 1899 to solidify the simulations. These estimates reveal that the increase in temperature compared to the beginning of the 20th century could be much higher than that expected in France at the end of the century. Until now, however, it was estimated that French temperatures would rise by +2.1°C with the intermediate scenario (meaning that there is neither an increase nor a drastic decrease in emissions) and +3.9°C with a "pessimistic" trajectory, according to the baseline climate projections made in 2020 by Météo-France. But according to this new study, almost 4 additional degrees would now be reached with the intermediate scenario. This intermediate scenario is the most likely scenario today as it seems to be in line with the trajectories of France and its current climate commitments. On average, France has already warmed by 1.7 degrees, which is more than the global average (+1.2°C).
