Combating for cleaner air is a complex and difficult task. Air quality managers across the world know about the challenges. UNEP estimate states that 99% of global population breathe polluted air that causes mild to severe health impacts. in world with 8.2 billion citizen 8 million persons die prematurely due to air pollution. It is a battle to be fought fiercely and fearlessly on basis of scientific and technological know-how for improving our health and life. It is a fight to re-establish our right to breath clean air for enjoying healthy life.
Air quality managers are required to work on different fronts simultaneously which include phasing out fossil fuel-based operations, understanding the human health impacts from toxic emissions, stopping waste burning, mobilizing construction industry to take appropriate measures and many more. Having the right kind of supporting documents and guidance for rolling out different activities in different fronts saves valuable time and that makes lots of difference.
In pursuit to empower the air quality managers, the United Nations Environment Programme has launched the "Breathlife2030" website as "one-stop shop” for the latest guidance and tools on air quality management," on 5th September 2024. This website has a rich resource exchange library, curated guidance for rolling out key activities like air quality monitoring, source apportionment studies (quantifying how each emission sources are impacting air quality), emission inventory (identifying and listing all emission sources in an air shed area with annual emission quantification), human health impact, sustainable development benefit assessment, decision support system, public engagement and communication. Having the right document or report in place for providing evidence for decision making or for advocacy for cleaner air is surely going help in cleaning the air. It is also going to support the Move the Money movement with the ample evidence of silent poisoning by fossil-based fuels ready at hand. Particulates and tropospheric Ozone has been targeted for reduction. However, it is also important to reduce other substances with higher GWP (Global warming potential) and toxicity. The idea is to meet the guidelines set by WHO (World Health Organization) in 2021.
This has been done as a resolution adapted by UNEP on 1st March 2024 (

This campaign is expected to fortify air quality management programmes in Africa and all other countries and to meet the goal of breathing fresh air by 2030 collectively. Creating an exchange library for air quality related matters is a challenging task and UNEP deserves climate love for this stride to make a collective difference.
