Climate warning

More than 250 Bangkok schools close over air pollution.

Bangkok closed over 250 schools due to hazardous air pollution, with PM2.5 levels reaching 122 micrograms per cubic meter, far exceeding the WHO's recommended limit of 15. Seasonal factors like crop burning, vehicle emissions, and stagnant winter air made the city the world’s sixth most polluted on Thursday. Vulnerable children are most affected, and UNICEF warned school closures harm disadvantaged students. Authorities urged remote work and restricted heavy trucks, but these measures have seen limited success. Critics accused Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, attending the World Economic Forum, of neglecting the issue. Clean air activists are pushing for comprehensive legislation, such as the Clean Air Act, to address the crisis. Experimental measures, including spraying water and dry ice, have been ineffective, highlighting the urgent need for long-term solutions.

Since this warning was posted, the Thai government has posted the following statement, outlining the actions they are taking to improve air quality: https://thailand.prd.go.th/en/content/category/detail/id/48/iid/358894

The vulnerable in society are always the ones who suffer the highest brunt of climate change. Such a shame.

@boniface_kuria It truly is. The most vulnerable bear the heaviest consequences, often without the means to protect themselves, making it even more critical for governments and societies to prioritize their well-being in climate action.

As long as the governement of any nation on this 90% polluted world, doesn't want to take measures to minimise air-pollution, by doing anything they can do, in the transportation sector and in the production sector of any kind, we should design a world-wide usable and free of charge to be distributed super breathing maskers, fitting all ages, and also filter all incoming air, to any habitats wherein people should try to live, and by fixing air-filtering devices to all windows, and we must believe that this global pollutad air would clear itself with time and would never come back, as long time ago it was mostly the case, but first of all we must take action ourselves, by stopping smoking right away, let's do it just now !! Never forget that through smoking, we do polluate not only our own lungs, but also our total direct environment, nonstop, each sigarette costs us 15 minutes of our lives and the lives of many people arround us, let's become "new-born" people today and keep us totally clean. Blessings.

The Bangkok government's failure to address hazardous air pollution reflects poor leadership and disregard for public health. Temporary measures aren't enough. Where’s the accountability? It's time for decisive action, like implementing comprehensive legislation, to prioritize a sustainable, clean environment for all.

@mercy_munyiri_296 Exactly. The lack of long-term, effective solutions and accountability is troubling. It's crucial that leaders move beyond temporary fixes and commit to systemic change, ensuring cleaner air and a healthier future for everyone, especially vulnerable communities.

@Kevin Clean air is a basic human right, and it's unacceptable for citizens to be exposed to such harmful conditions. Everyone deserves to breathe clean air.

It's so sad to see that even the bare minimum of clean, quality air is disrupted because of industrialization, neglecting human needs and safety!

This is very sad, it shows how much they had neglected sustainability, health standards, waste deposit, pollution from industries, recycling, and ends up to this hazardous situation. This should be taken seriously and solutions are needed Asap. This shows the expense of climate impact negligence.
